  1. I'll be attending William and Mary. Anyone else?
  2. I was contacted by CUNY Graduate Center asking for an interview. I politely declined, as I have recently accepted my offer at William and Mary. Hopefully this opens up room for anyone still holding out for them!
  3. Thanks! I got the call last night, the official email this morning, and I accepted it! "It only takes one" has been my mantra throughout the process... and that's precisely how it played out. I couldn't be more excited by the program, my future advisor, the funding package, or the opportunity to live in the Chesapeake (My girlfriend and I both have deep roots in the area).
  4. Yeah, I didn't realize how small their typical cohort is until after I applied. Shoddy research on my part, I suppose. The school fits my research interests very well (not to mention it is close to family and friends). We'll see what happens!
  5. Indeed. And as someone who is on their wait list, I am quite intrigued.
  6. And I may be biased, but I can vouch for Chicago being a great city. (It's mid-February, and it's 60 degrees today... what the hell?)
  7. NW may not have the same name recognition to the general public in some parts of the world, but I'd be quite surprised if the people in your department would advise you to turn down a funded spot there.
  8. I'd concur with the poster recommending Rhetoric. In addition to Berkeley, both Penn State and South Carolina have very strong Rhetoric program--and I know for certain that USC has several faculty with interests in Historiography. But I also agree with this: For better or for worse (but probably for better) theory of history/historiography work is done by practicing historians. After all, we are bound to empirical methods that Rhetoric, Philosophy, etc, are not (at least as much), so it follows that we can bring that practical experience to the theoretical table only after honing those skills and perspectives in the archive.
  9. Early American Republic. What about yourself?
  10. Does anyone know if no interview= rejection at CUNY Graduate Center?
  11. So, who is my McGill waitlist buddy? That makes 2 wait lists, a slew of rejections, and 3 schools outstanding for me.
  12. Indeed. This week that began with a bang will seemingly go out with a wimper. I'm waiting for my rejection letters from Wisconsin and Chicago (and, presumably, from Columbia). Still holding out hope for McGill, CUNY Graduate Center, Notre Dame, and Lehigh. Happy weekend, folks!
  13. Dammit. I just got a phone call from a Chicago phone number.... I may have won a cruise.
  14. Congrats on Northwestern! I currently live in Chicago, shoot me a message if you have any questions about the city.
  15. Franco-American connections in the nineteenth century. Another similarity with Chicago and Columbia from years past: they don't send rejections out right away, leaving you to assume that it's coming if you don't get a golden ticket. Can't wait for this to be done.
  16. Ah, well, I'm not sure if you would hear back before they send out acceptances. And you're right; Columbia seems to be very consistent with sending out acceptances in the second week of February. Eek. Good luck! What is your focus?
  17. Seems that a few folks have been interviewed, and one was rejected for the PhD. and referred to an MA program. It doesn't seem to me to be in great enough numbers to suggest that these have been systematic responses by the department--anyone want to chime in?
  18. Question for the group: is this waiting process more akin to Kremlinology or guessing the results of a papal conclave?
  19. Yep. Started my day with rejections from NYU in my email, and Johns Hopkins in my mailbox. I live in Chicago, so maybe U of C can give me the thumbs-down in person.
  20. Congrats to the South Carolina admit! I did my Masters there, so feel free to PM me any questions!
  21. Yep, this ought to be a busy week. who wants to bet this thread adds ten+ pages by this time next week? Side note: at nine sharp this morning I received a call from an unknown New York City number (I applied to three schools in the city). It was, of course, someone trying to get me to sign up for dental insurance! Sigh.
  22. Agreed. I found out last week that an article of mine is accepted for publication, so I sent that news and an updated CV to my departments asking for this to be a part of my file.
  23. I feel this way too, Neist. I've applied to PhD. programs before -- once in 2011, whenI also got into a (funded) MA program, and once again last year when I was shut out from the two top-15 programs I applied to. After spending the year working on various aspects of my CV, and really working my ass off on the 13 applications I've just submitted, I am far less stressed about my chances than when my applications were more of "a wing and a prayer." I may not get in-- but I know that I've done all I can with the time that I had this year, so, I'm less of a ball of nerves than I expected to be at this point. Best of luck!
