That's what I assumed. But there is one problem: I am an international student and I can't visit to do an apartment hunting. So I can either sign a lease now for a pig in a poke or hope that there will be something left in August. The latter seems rather unlikely, in the former case I want to be sure that apartment is in good shape and the landlord is responsible. So, university housing seems like natural choice for the first year. Taking this into consideration, what is your opinion? Also, when should I start looking for apartments for the next (2010-...) year? Spring? Winter?

Yes. It says that you must inform them in writing, but you don't need their approval. Release is required if you decide to back out after Apr 15.

Probably one more topic of this kind which stay unanswered for most part, but I'll give it a try. I'm choosing PhD programs. UIUC is funded, I'll know about UMich in a couple of days (if it is not funded, it is out of competition anyway, so let's assume that it is and the amount is probably more or less comparable) Location is better for UMich, whereas UIUC is higher ranked (Yes, I know what everybody think about rankings. Still, I don't have a lot of info, so have to rely on what is available). COL is lower in Urbana-Champaign. I also heard that UIUC has very competitive atmoshpere (in a bad way) My interest is in machine learning and programming languages. Any comments will be appreciated.

Finally, I have been recommended for admission. Details and funding info will follow. Whoohoo! Now I have a tough choice between UIUC and UMich and a possibility of Caltech adding to the competition later. Oh my, I almost wish to have been rejected, it would have made following 2-3 weeks much easier
