  1. I was an anxious wreck before I got my acceptances, and it's STILL really bad! I haven't gotten official funding decisions from either school, so now I'm getting more and more worried about the money side of things. If I'm going to live in California, I'm going to need a good funding package. I refuse to take out more loans! I've been having a hard time sleeping... grr.
  2. I saw some people got admits at OSU and Maryland. I didn't apply there, but congrats to everyone!
  3. No, imo it's usually best to let your application speak for itself.
  4. Oh, I know... the email essentially means nothing, which irritated me. Why not just give people some information?
  5. LOL, I got the lamest email ever from Minnesota American Studies. They were like "You can expect to hear admissions decisions by mid-February, and the notification will come directly from the Grad School." Oh, okay. Are they seriously pretending like they don't notify accepted applicants personally? Anyway, if the only contact they're telling me to expect to receive is from the graduate school, that means I'm getting rejected. BTW, I did ask if accepted applicants had been notified, and they were really not very transparent. What's the point in keeping us in the dark? Overall, not very impressed. So glad I'm already in elsewhere.
  6. thanks feminist21! Congratulations on your admits! Oxford... wow. I hope they give you all the funding you need.
  7. No response yet from them. I'm on here all the time, so if I don't post, assume I haven't heard anything. Taking one for the team!
  8. I did email, and I haven't heard anything yet. I'll post when I hear a response.
  9. I have heard no news from Minnesota American Studies, and no one I've talked to on this board has yet either. I'm guessing that admits haven't even gone out yet! Someone on this board would surely post. I'm thinking about emailing the department, mostly because I don't really care anymore. I already have two acceptances to women's studies programs, but I'd like to know about Minnesota.
  10. lol ikr? it seems like on the whole this bunch is having a lot more success than past years' threads. go us! and feminist21 congrats on your offer with funding! how exciting! do you feel like sharing where you got in? (pm is okay if you don't want to post)
  11. I went to an Ivy. I am from a poor family. I am still poor. I didn't attend to be "rich." I'm getting a Ph.D. in the humanities, because I love it. If this person seriously thinks no working class people exist in the Ivy League, the author simply isn't looking hard enough. True, I have felt very uncomfortable amongst the wealthy, and I can't wait to the leave the Ivy League, but I worked hard for many of the A-'s I received. They weren't simply handouts. My partner is also from a working class family and will be the only person in their family ever to attend and finish college. Ridiculous.
  12. Definitely do NOT give up hope yet. The first two responses I received were rejections, but then after that I received two acceptances within the same week! So chin up. And I only applied to six!
  13. Not creepy at all! I was actually going to apply tomorrow. I suppose I'll be meeting you when I fly out in March, so yay! I'm very very excited about all of this. Thanks for posting!
  14. UCSB just emailed me to let me know that they've nominated me for a central fellowship, and provided that I get it, I am in with funding. I won't know the outcome of the university-wide competition until February, but they told me it has never been a problem in the past. I was invited to the recruitment event in March, also, so if you've applied to UCSB, check your email inboxes. update: aww, I just got a really nice note from a potential advisor at UCSB, just inviting me to keep in touch if I have any questions.
  15. soulinmyfist, I have no idea how many people were accepted, they didn't say. I think they usually accept 5-8 people, but since most departments are cutting back due to finances, it could be less. I haven't really heard much of anything from them yet, actually. Just that I'm accepted, they want to fly me out in March, and they'll let me know about my funding package later on. I will absolutely let you know when I hear more, though. And yes, LA is ungodly expensive, but it's actually not all that much more expensive than where I'm currently living, in the middle of nowhere New England. I'll probably have to go with either campus housing or a house/apartment share if I end up at UCLA. Luckily, my partner is moving out there with me, and we expect to share living expenses together.
  16. Thank you. I was accepted to UCLA's women's studies ph.d. program. I applied mostly to women's and gender studies program, but since UMN has such a wonderful group of feminist scholars, I thought the American Studies program was a good fit for my interests, too. Good luck! I'll post here when and if I hear anything from American Studies. I'm sure they'll be contacting accepted people soon! (PS-- a lot of schools are replying later than usual due to a general increase in applications this year. Lots of people with no jobs = more people trying to get into grad school.)
  17. I applied to Am. studies and women's studies. Got rejected from women's, but haven't heard anything from American Studies yet. No one has, I don't think.
  18. SEE?! I told you you'd get good news!
  19. lol, getmeoutoftexas, I love your username btw. And yes, here is hoping we all get into our dream schools. Good luck everyone, I'm rooting for you.
  20. Just got a call from UCLA! I'm in there for sure. Yay!
  21. dunkelbluecola, that's actually very high praise, though it probably doesn't seem like it now. I was actually really, really bummed that I was rejected at UMN, since I contacted many, many profs in the dept. and they all encouraged me to apply (maybe they do that with everyone, who knows). And I received a really crappy rejection (lol, it didn't even offer the usual excuse about "more competition this year"), so the fact that you actually received positive feedback is very encouraging. It means you have a strong application! You'll almost definitely receive some firm offers from other schools. And when they say "try again next year", they really mean it. They don't just say that for their own health. And, I heard some news last night! It's too early to say, but I *think* I'm in somewhere-- very unofficially, so I'll let you guys know in a couple of days when/if I have a firm offer. It was from one of the UC's.
  22. There are lots of different scholars working on these areas within the humanities. You should research various history and english programs and specific professors, and you should also look at women's and gender studies programs if you're interested in gender and medicine/science. Most people working on interdisciplinary work are still situated in "traditional" departments, if that makes sense. So I would look at some of the more traditional programs and email people in those departments who appear to be working in a similar field.
  23. Has anyone heard anything from either UCLA or UCSB?
  24. Nothing on my end yet. And yes, finding housing at both the UC schools I applied would indeed be a huge burden. Luckily, I have been saving money just in case I do get in at either school. I've been searching the results archive and in the past, it seems like UCLA and UCSB tend to call their accepted students the last week in January, so here's hoping I get some good news from either of those places this week. I'm getting kind of nervous because I heard a lot more people are applying for ph.d.'s in the humanities than previous years, so competition is particularly stiff. And feminist21, congratulations on your acceptance! I'm sure there is more good news on the way for you.
  25. Well, it looks like the Emory interview invitations were given out last night. I didn't get one so I suppose I'm rejected there, too. Grr. 4 more to go!
