  1. I feel like shit, and I haven't even received an official rejection yet...

Tough not being invited to the Prom; me too.

  2. +1 (I'm out of up-votes today.)
  3. I feel you. What if NYU calls today as well? I don't know if I could handle that. Then again, I need to get my rejections over with...
  4. Oh god, they've started to notify. I'm going to be nervously checking my phone all day, never getting anything done...
  5. Thanks for the info. I assumed I had been rejected, but now I can more or less say for sure. NYU hasn't notified yet this season. If they had, it would show up on the results board: NYU has a very popular program, so we'd definitely see something on there, even if no one from thegradcafe gets in (but I think someone will).
  6. You're certainly welcome to join our pity party, but I don't think you'll be in it for long! I suspect good news will come your way this season.
  7. I think my SOP was far too generic as well: you're not alone!
  8. Same. I still expect NYU and Northwestern to start notifying this week though, among other programs.
  9. We're both misanthropes and ascetics, but that's as far as similarities go. If I do end up at a prospective students' weekend or something with some of you guys, should I wear a "Two Espressos" nametag? Maybe a Beckett mask, if they exist? Ha.
  10. Damn, I wasn't aware of the funding stuff. I would gladly attend any of the programs to which I applied, but Madison is probably at or near the bottom of my (admittedly short) list anyways, so I'm trying to not let it get me down too much. ETA: rems, I'm not a medievalist (my foreign language capabilities are too feeble). I'm mostly into 20th-century lit and philosophy.
  11. Now that admissions decisions are starting to come out, I'm not sure I'm ready for them.

  12. I did see that before actually, but thanks for bringing it to our attention. Do you think by "admissions committees" they're referring to separate committees for rhet/comp, literary studies, and linguistics, or to sub-committees for literary studies, rhet/comp, and linguistics? I think the former is more likely, which is why I'm assuming I've been rejected (bluecheese's acceptance was for literary studies, correct?).
  13. Congrats to all the Madison admits! Goddamn all the Madison admits! /thread (I applied to Madison but have heard nothing. I'm assuming that's a rejection... ouch.)
  14. Yeah, what's with the date? The 14th of January is damn early. This week has been so quiet: the calm before the storm (...of happiness?!).
  15. I've done some reading in philosophy of language, but I'm pretty new to that field. I've never done formal semantics either, though I'm taking a symbolic logic course this semester and have done some basic proofs. It's cool stuff.
  16. /topic Really, though, I love your wording here.
  17. Hm, I'm not sure if that's such a good idea: I'd say "no." Maybe others have a more informed opinion? ETA: If by "notifying" you mean "send an updated CV," then maybe that's okay. I interpreted your comment as meaning "send an email about," something that I think may be an unnecessary bother.
  18. If I'm fortunate enough to start a Ph.D. in English someday (this fall?), I'd definitely like to do some "math-y" stuff. It's good to know I'm not alone in this. ETA: I should note that I haven't really done anything like this yet either.
  19. Yep! I applied earlier this year. I think my odds are good, especially compared to the dismal odds for Ph.D. admits in English (2-10%). I think the acceptance rate for French T.A.'s last year was around 47% or so.
  20. If I fail, I might apply to grad schools next season, but it won't be in English: it'll be in philosophy. And, knowing that philosophy is even more competitive than the former and that I lack the requisite credentials, I'll strictly be applying to M.A. programs in the discipline. Really though, I have a few decent back-up plans for this year if I'm rejected across the board. I'm especially excited about possibly teaching in France. That would be cool.
  21. I only mentioned NYU, Buffalo, and Northwestern because I applied to those places. I'm completely unfamiliar with other schools, but I'm glad to hear that this week (or next, or both) will be eventful. Good luck, everyone!
  22. I agree. My guess is that NYU and Northwestern will notify this week, possibly Buffalo too. I don't expect Madison to reply for another two weeks or so. But... ...What sort of email did you receive?
  23. Yeah, girl who wears glasses was trying to be funny: hence the "but, but" and "because of reasons."
  24. No worries, thestage: I was in this thread already too, though not as an applicant. If I fail utterly this year, I'll be in here three years running (damn the thought!). Really though, there's a goddamn lot of posts here: over a thousand?! I know the Lit/Rhet&Comp boards are the most active on this website, but still. And I read through all of these posts last year... really shows how I mismanaged my time...
  25. "You betrayed me! You're not good. You, you're just a chicken. Chip-chip-chip-chip-cheep-cheep."
