  1. I'm not sure. There are definitely deleted scenes, an interview with Wiseau, behind-the-scenes footage, etc. The DVD is worth it for the multitudinous spelling/grammar errors alone: iconic scenes are just that much better when they're listed as, e.g., "You're tearing me a part Lisa!"
  2. *cough* I own the DVD *cough*
  3. Hm, reminds me of a former professor...
  4. YOUR LIFE IS NOW COMPLETE "If you think I'm tired today, wait until you see me tomorrow!" "Lisa looks so hawt tonight!" "I'm not pregnant: I made it up to make things more interesting!"
  5. This is one of the funniest posts I've read on here.
  6. "I got the results of the test back: I definitely have breast cancer." I'm really glad so many people on here have seen this movie.
  7. I surely hope they only change the status for a rejection, haha. I'd like to believe we all still have a chance.
  8. Oh okay. I sent in everything before the deadline, but it still says "not reviewed." Here's to hoping that both of our apps are okay and have been reviewed by the admissions committee!
  9. What about your application status: does it read "under review" or something similar, or does it say "not yet reviewed" like mine?
  10. The regular admits to UB would be given TAships though I think. So it's still funded, unless I'm wrong about this?
  11. Care to elaborate here? I'm very concerned about my Buffalo status as well, though maybe for a different reason? Basically, my UB status site says that everything was received (long ago, of course), including my LORs, but then there's a line that reads "letters of recommendation" and is listed as not received. And my status has never changed from being "not reviewed." Didn't rems say awhile ago that her status changed to "under review" or something? With bluecheese's Buffalo acceptance, should I be worried about this, or am I overreacting? Do you have a similar concern, girlwhowearsglasses, or is it something different?
  12. There's definitely some leeway with what I said above. I just wanted to counteract the idea that I've sometimes seen around here that one should apply to as many programs as possible. That kind of myopic indiscretion seems extremely unwise for those who actually want a chance at an academic career after their Ph.D., as you state. Okay, but besides the borderline appeal to authority here, do you disagree with what I've written? Sorry for hijacking your thread, Comp Lit people. I'll leave you alone now. *disappears*
  13. I'm not sure you received sound advice. What does mass-application dumping--in vvvooommm's parlance-- really add besides time and stress? At that point, it looks less like genuine interest and more like desperation. If applicant A has a shitty application and applies to 20+ schools, and applicant B has a great application but only applies to 6 schools, who is more likely to get in? I'd say applicant B. And I don't see why someone with a strong application would bother applying to dozens of places: I highly doubt this hypothetical person really fits in and likes all of those programs.
  14. It certainly isn't necessary to apply to 20+ programs; I actually find the idea ludicrous. I wonder: why is this person applying to so many goddamn programs? I think 6-10 programs is a realistic and sensible range.
  15. Wow, awesome! Buffalo's one of my top choices, despite all the psychoanalysis. This is my bet as well. I didn't really expect to hear anything until next week (and haven't).
  16. I think the embodied simulation hypothesis is a really big deal, especially for people in the humanities, so it could be great for your thesis! Plus Louder Than Words is very recent, so it'll give your thesis a cutting-edge vibe. Good luck!
  17. Most of what's written in that post is exceedingly obvious to anyone serious about pursuing a Ph.D., so it's curious that the piece is written like it's saying something revelatory.
  18. Very true. Not sure I'm cool with that description though...
  19. I freaked out a little bit when I read about the GRE threshold at Buffalo. My total score puts me over that limit, but just barely. Now I wonder if my GRE scores are too weak for fellowship nomination at more "elite" programs that expect higher numbers. Probably... You're too kind. Really though, my SOP and writing sample are pretty bad. I don't think I was specific enough on the former, and I feel like the thesis of the latter, while somewhat interesting and provocative, could be torn to shreds rather easily. I wrote the paper under really intense deadlines, so I'm somewhat proud of it, but I wish I had an extra week or two to polish it.
  20. Yeah, what's with English departments and politics? My university (strictly an undergraduate school, sorry for hijacking the thread) had multiple lawsuits coming out of the English department last spring. Those were...interesting times.
  21. Absolutely. I wish my SOP and writing sample weren't shitty. My GRE scores aren't terrible, so I'll pretend that they don't bother me. Ditto for my GPA.
  22. Yeah, the weather is pretty brutal here too. Sub-zero temps aren't all that common, but we've had them the past few days.
  23. Yeah, that should be an awesome class. I'm not so familiar with George Lakoff, but I read his former student Benjamin Bergen's new book Louder Than Words over the break, which was very much about language, meaning, and the mind. I think Lakoff wrote the introduction to the book, actually.
  24. It won't be long for some places. Judging from previous years, NYU and Northwestern will probably start notifying by next week or so...
