  1. I spent about 2 grand on applications, gre, transcripts, etc., but considering the ludicrous opportunity costs inherent to this operation (giving up current career, moving across country, making maybe 1/2 of my current salary if i can get a TT job, and only making 14-20k/year for the next five years), whats a few grand?
  2. Hey guvkid. Can I ask what kind of stats you have besides the JD? Also, with NW, did they change your status on the website yet?
  3. Congrats guv!
  4. NW admits - can you please identify your subfield?
  5. You should call northwestern next
  6. UNC, Duke, and NW need to get things sorted out quickly.
  7. So who are we supposed to be hearing from this week?
  8. If you apply again next year I'd focus on improving your GRE verbal score a little bit just to get your application looked at by every school. Some of the top schools don't look at applications that don't have a 700+q, 700+v, and 3.5+ gpa. Once you get past those hurdles you'll get looked at everywhere. Your scores are good enough to get you looked at most schools though. If you do that then you'll have a really nice shot with your background in econ and, i assume, quantitative methods.
  9. Some top schools might not look at your app without a 700 in verbal, but you should do fine otherwise. Did you already apply?
  10. When contacting schools, are you contacting the graduate admissions folks or the actual polisci departments? Congrats on UVA. I have a friend in the PhD program nd he loves it.
  11. Let's not get too down on ourselves because only a small percentage of schools are done with all notifications. Keep yer heads up little tigers. We'll know much more this time next week.
  12. Come on man. It ain't so bad. Better than working 60 hours a week like I do now.
  13. NYU way up.
  14. I'm not sure that real world experience matters much to adcoms. They're looking for clues that you can develop theoretical social science research and are serious about becoming a lifelong academic. I'm with you on having the bad luck of applying at a time when it looks like we are trying to hide from the economy. I'm having the most successful year that I've ever had in the private sector and will be sacrificing to pursue this. I've been planning on applying this year for three years now and picked a really awful year. I wish that I would have applied last year. I feel your pain.
  15. This is definitely, without a doubt, the worst year to be applying to graduate school.
  16. UChicago allows students to take classes without having been accepted to a degree program. The tuition is about half as much.
  17. Someone posted saying that Stanford is sending letters out on Thursday.
  18. Any other NM? My status hasn't changed and I'm doubting that people are doing this on the weekend because it is likely grad school administrative folks that update these statuses.
  19. Not in LA! It worked well for Yale (well, not really since i didnt get in).
  20. Quick, someone call some other schools.
  21. Unfortunately those schools probably won't even look at your app with a gre v of 580. Study really hard on the verbal section and apply to some schools lower on the list.
  22. Poor us. Crossing my fingers for those of you that haven't been dinged.
  23. Also rejected from Yale. Doh! What is up with the 8,500 applicants?!? I'm guessing that they mean to the graduate school as a whole and not specifically political science.
  24. Congrats to the NW person! Help the rest of us get in
  25. I applied to 13 schools all in the top 25 or so with a high concentration of top 10 schools. I'm looking forward to hearing from Cornell, Yale, and Northwestern most, but I'd of course love to get into a Stanford or Princeton...but that seems unlikely.
