He didn't tell me that he won't be publishing/attending conferences. This was just an assumption I made.... Is it impolite to ask him these questions? I read a lot of his publications and I think he is really great... So I guess I am just a little shy when it comes to telling him about my concerns....

One of my potential advisers just wrote me that he will be retiring in December 2011. But he would still be willing to advise me and I would have another full-time faculty member on campus in his exact field who could help me out. He would still be living in the area. What are possible problems with this type of arrangement? He told me that it is very common, but I guess that there are problems I have to consider before making a decision. For example: He won't be attending conferences (at all or at least not that much) - so I couldn't accompany him, right? He also won't be publishing, I guess... Could this be a disadvantage for me? What else is there to think about?

I just found my rejection letter online. The website also says "decisions are posted" - so I guess everyone should find his results by now. -
Do professors care if you wear sweatpants all the time?
Kathiza replied to InquilineKea's topic in The Lobby
I also want to add my 2cents (again). First: I don't think it's this unpersonal thing called "society" that makes people feel selfconscious about their appearance. It's THE PEOPLE themselves. Don't you think not that attractive women hear it every day that they are not that attractive? Don't you think they get the looks of other people (male and female)? Don't you think they understand what's "wrong" when the flower-guy gives the beautiful blond woman before you three roses just because it's such a beautiful day - and then refuses to even look you in the eyes or say thank you when you order and pay? (Just as an example - no personal experience). What I'm trying to say is: People who do not fit into the current (!) perception of what is "beautiful" and "the norm" - they KNOW it, because there are explicitely and implicitely told so every single day. It's not "the society" who is at fault - it's every single one of the people out there. (Okay, probably not every single one, but most of them). Second: My opinion on that is not the reason why I choose to wear makeup every day. The things I feel most self-conscious about can't be covered up with makeup. So I don't write all of this because I feel like I am one of those people and everybody treats me badly because of my looks. Luckily I haven't had that many problems even though I know I don't fit into the current perception of beauty. But I see it every day and I see how it happens to people every day. And practically it happens to 90 % of us because who really does fit into the beauty-scheme? Just a hand full of models, and who else? Well - most of us don't, but we are building beauty-hierarchies. We think: I am more "beautiful" (according to whatever standards) than s/he is, so I can judge him/her for his/her looks. Third: Despite all this, I feel that it's a matter of respect to dress decently to class or whereever you are going. I don't think it shows respect to go to class in sweatpants or even worse - to teach or work in sweatpants or shorts (except when you're a fitness trainer or something like that ;-)) I think people should at least be prepared to put on a pair of jeans. That's not much work, that's not dressing up, but it at least shows that somebody cares a little bit... -

I know this might be a stupid question since I really expect to be rejected, but did they say if they send out funding info together with the admission decision or if admitted students have to wait again for funding info? -
Yes, same here... I basically KNOW that I won't get in. My GRE scores are really not that great at all and I don't have a 4.0 GPA. But let's see... I just want it to be over... I saw that your location is "Columbia" - are you at Mizzou? If so, would you mind PMing me and telling me a little bit about how you like it there, what the school/profs are like, how you like living in Columbia etc? I applied to Mizzou and even though I haven't heard from them yet, I really hope to get in. It's practically the perfect fit for me...

And they have spring break next week - so I'm sure they'll send out everything this week. It's just so nervewrecking to know that my decision e-mail might be processed so slowly and I will only hear from them next week.... I finally want to have all my decisions to be able to decide where I want to go... -
Oh no... that's really frustrating. I feel for you and hope everything turns out fine and they get back to you on time.

There is new content on the site for newly admitted students. It was empty a week ago and a couple of days ago they put online the new content. I didn't really read it until last night. So yes, this link (http://www.journalis...ed-students/488) is for the students of 2011 - because it's the new content. Edit: Oh, you're right.... BUT: The site was empty, then it was with new content (and class overview - I read it yesterday) and today all the new content is still on there but the class overview is gone. So maybe they just copy-pasted the content from last year including the class overview and forgot to replace it with the new class info.... (I hope you get what I want to say.... I've had class all day and I'm extremely tired...)

Oh my god... my status has changed and now doesn't say "under review" anymore, but "application complete"... I am quite sure that I'll be rejected - so I don't have high hopes or expectations. But I just really want to know right now. Since my notification always takes way longer than others (due to Fulbright) - please let me know if someone here receives an e-mail or something. Thanks! PS: I don't know if you know this site... but http://www.journalism.columbia.edu/page/155-newly-admitted-students/488 One doctoral student from outside the US. That can't be me. But please tell me finally....

Good to know! I hope I'll hear from my other schools within this week and I'll be able to make a decision very soon. You may hear from me ;-)
-
Congrats, Gunner! I have a feeling that this week will be THE week for me. I hope I'm gonna hear from my other three schools and be able to decide soon. Exciting exciting exciting.... :-)

Be a little patient. Mid-march lasts until the 20th - at least for me. So maybe wait until the end of the week or the beginning of next week before you ask for an update.

I applied for PhD but nothing as well...
-
I looked into dorms and most classic dorms require a meal plan and have shared bathrooms - and besides, almost all of them are undergrad only. So I looked into university-owned apartments on campus. They look really nice, affordable (if you share one with another person) and I could really imagine living there. Unfortunately, they are all unfurnished... So I don't know what to do about that. I don't want to buy a whole set of furniture because I have to leave the US after completion of my program (3 years) due to my J-1 visa. Hmm, I still have to think about that. And... I haven't even definitely decided to go to IUB. But it's definitely a great choice.

International Fulbrighters Fall2011
Kathiza replied to LongGone's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I did exactly like you said, abaabeel, but this doesn't help. Some universities process international applications more slowly than national ones. And sometimes there is just no reason why one application decision is delayed. Mizzou sent out decisions two weeks ago. I asked my Fulbright office if there is a decision for me or if I could write to the school. They said the decision is still pending and that writing to the school wouldn't make a difference - since they are obviously still processing my application. So just be patient. I know it's hard (I freaked out several times on this forum because it took so long until I got my first notification) - but hang in there! -
Yay, congratulations! That's good news. Did they say anything about funding?

International Fulbrighters Fall2011
Kathiza replied to LongGone's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
In my country, Fulbright works differently. I applied for it a year ago. I got selected in June 2010. And then I figured out the whole application process together with Fulbright. So they already selected me for the grant and I applied to the schools as a Fulbright grantee with them writing a cover letter for me etc. -
What software do you use/find indispensable?
Kathiza replied to Postbib Yeshuist's topic in Officially Grads
I think EndNote is pretty sexy. (But it's expensive if you don't get a student discount at your university; it's basically a literature management program that makes writing papers and compiling reading lists or bibliographies much easier und much less work - you can use it with Word, the Word-equivalent of Mac (I don't know the name, sorry), LaTex and many more...) I'm also hoping for some sexy members of my cohort, but that's another story -
Yes and no. I got a tuition waiver for the whole duration of the program and I got other funding for the first year. But no TA/RA. I can apply for those during my first year.

Are you sure he didn't do this just to provoke you? I had a scholarship interview and the interviewer was extremely verbally aggressive. He told me my research was worthless (in other words, but that was basically what he said), he told me to do something completely different with my life etc. And in the end I got the scholarship and I understood that he just wanted to provoke me and see if I stand by my opinion/choices or if I say anything just to please him. Maybe this professor just tried to put you in an awkward situation to see how you'd react and if you'd feel intimidated etc. Just an idea...
-
Thank you. YOu are all so great! Seriously! You are so motivating and I have the feeling that you can be genuinely happy for other people. Thank you so much. You make getting accepted even more fun!

I just got accepted. I don't know where I'll be going yet, but Miami is definitely a good option.
-
Just got accepted to UMiami + funding. :-)

International Fulbrighters Fall2011
Kathiza replied to LongGone's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I wanted to add something about the slow notification of acceptances and the quick notification of rejections: This may be due to the fact that the IIE tries to get the best possible financial aid for Fulbrighters. So the school sends an acceptance + funding and then the IIE tries to bargain this offer and get more money for us. BUT: My acceptance letter from IUB (no word on funding - will be decided later this month) was dated 2/16 and still it took the IIE two weeks to notify Fulbright in my country. I don't kow the reasons why.
