Really? Hmm, since they told me on the phone that they already started making decisions and it won't be much longer, I expected to hear from them this week...

Two bedroom, two bathroom sounds great. Which complex is this? I would like to have my own bathroom, although I don't mind sharing the rest of the apartment with one or several people. It's just: I need my own room. And I need my own bathroom. And I want to live on campus. I had a look at the Hillcrest apts - because they are close to the School of Journalism. Any opinions on Hillcrest?

I just got accepted to IUB :-))) I'll have to wait on some other schools, but still (one can never be over-prepared, right? *g*): Where can grad students live for (very) cheap on/near campus? Any suggestions? (Of course I will have a look on the university housing website... I just thought maybe somebody has something important to say on this topic that's not on the website). I'd like to live in a "community" (so no single apartment where I don't even know the names of my neighbors) - so maybe a dorm? Are there dorms for grad students? Oh well, I will have a look online - but please if you have some suggestions, post it here. I'm still so excited. It's the first news from any of my schools... And I couldn't reach my parents yet to tell them. But I'm soooo happy! :-)

Thank you, you are all so great! Seriously! It's amazing how helpful you all are and how patient you are enduring my crazy spamming/posting here ;-) And yes, I do need extra funding. Fulbright provides for the first year of study. But afterwards, I need university funding. The problem is also: I'm not allowed to work for somebody other than my university. So I don't have the possibility to just get a random job to pay for my studies. But it will all work out. I'm confident. The program is a good fit and the professor there is so great.

Got accepted to Indiana. I'm so excited. It took me a minute to write these words because I kept making typos since my hands are shaking. Craaaazy! No info on funding yet, though. Will be sent later in March. I know today was the day! Yihaaaaaaa!

Nothing nothing nothing. But I got a package today (something really unnecessary I ordered over the internet). That makes for a good day. But tomorrow I really NEED an acceptance. Please!

Do professors care if you wear sweatpants all the time?

Oh, i thought because of your forum name that you were German. -

Kathiza replied to InquilineKea's topic in The Lobby
I have to say for me sweatpants to class are wayyyyyy worse than socks with sandals ;-) (I don't wear both, just in case you are wondering) And Eisenmann (who still didn't answer my question concerning his nationality): I think I understood you the way you meant it. I see grad school more as a job than school. And for a job everybody (no matter if you're a man or a woman) should dress appropriately. I don't care if women wear makeup or not - it's everybody's own choice. I do, because it makes me feel more secure and gives me more confidence in myself. And that's really the point I think. I believe nobody can be really confident and present himself in a good way in front of professors or a class in sweatpants. -
Anonymous Details on Funding Offers
Kathiza replied to TVDOC's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
Sorry for using this thread, but I have a question: Some of my schools give standard-packages of full tuition/insurance + 14.000/15.000 a year. (just like Jcantrone) Is this enough to live on? It seems very little to me, especially since I won't be able to take another job (because of my visa). Is this really enough to pay rent and to not starve and have a social life (which means going to the movies or out sometimes...)? -

fsmn36: I'm like you. I don't dress up that much (I usually wear jeans and a nice blouse/top), but I never go out without make up. (It's interesting that Eisenmann seams to like this; I always had the feeling men don't like it that much). When I was a teenager, I had pretty bad skin and that was when I started wearing make up. Until today, I still feel self-conscious about my skin and I wear make up every single day. As I already mentioned in this thread: I would never never NEVER ever wear sweatpants or yoga-pants to class. That's just something we don't do here. And Eisenmann, are you German? -
I love this discussion! I always hoped grad school would be like this: A bunch of intelligent, motivated people discussing a serious matter. We are the ones who will change the world! Yihaaaaa!

International Fulbrighters Fall2011
Kathiza replied to LongGone's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Don't you have a fixed budget for your first year? Fulbrighters in my country get a fixed maximum budget. So if they go to a more expensive school, they can get all of this money. If they choose to go to a "cheaper" school, they get less - according to the tuition and living costs. That's really interesting how Fulbright works differently in each country. -
International Fulbrighters Fall2011
Kathiza replied to LongGone's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
That's strange... In my country the IIE selects the schools to which my applications are sent. But when the acceptances are in, I can make my choice. Your e-mail sounds like IIE makes the choice for you. Did you at least get a say in where your applications were sent to. -
Something else... I know there's a thread about this, but I wanted to ask you guys.... Do you have a plan B? Because I.... don't
-
Yes, i also feel like there's finally something happening. I hope next week will be my lucky week. I'll keep you posted. (I can't really talk to anyone else, since I'm keeping my application a secret apart from parents/siblings and some very close friends - so I feel like this board is the only possibility for me to talk about all this... That would also explain my massive amount of posting in the last few weeks ;-))

How did you manage to carry 6 suitcases? Or were you able to take a taxi straight from the airport to your apartment, without having to change planes/trains/busses/whatever? I can't imagine bringing so much with me. I had trouble returning home after my research stay in the US one year ago with two suitcases, a carry-on and a handbag.
-
It's called seven seas worldwide - (sevenseasworldwide.com) - I have the link from this forum. But my dad works at a company which has good contacts to shipping companies and may be able to give me an even cheaper price. I will still have to do some thinking if I really want to send two boxes or just one. But for 300 euros, you can't buy a whole winter wardrobe (and I'm not a person who wears designer brands at all, I'm mostly the H&M type of girl). So I'd rather bring my winter shoes/coat/clothes with me instead of spending the money to buy it all new. And there are some items that are really important to me. But I haven't figured it out completely yet (I don't even have an admit). I will make a list of what I really want/need and then see what's the cheapest option.
-
Yes, I'm in Europe. But I already did some research. Two boxes with 30 kg each (wich is A LOT) would cost me under 300 Euros from door to door, packing material included. If I only send one box, it's even cheaper. So I think I will just bring summer clothes/shoes and other necessary items and send the rest as a package. I don't have a lot of clothes, because I didn't buy much new stuff. I thought: Why buy new stuff if I may not be able to bring it with me? I'm also obsessed with cosmetics and stuff, but I try to use up as much as possible now because there is no way I will pay extra money for bringing ten different choices of body lotion or hand cream
-
Me too, but there is no chance I will be able to pack a 20 kg maximum suitcase with clothes (for different seasons, different occasions, shoes, handbags), books, computer (+ external harddrive + other small but heavy stuff). I will bring the allowed 1 suitcase. Then I will send one or two boxes via a shipping company for very little money (at least cheaper than checking another 20 kg suitcase).

Congratulations! I just saw you were accepted by Indiana. For what exactly did you apply?
-
There's again a UNC result from today via e-mail. Anyone can claim that? Was it Communication Studies or Mass Communication?
-
Wow, I just see: You didn't even get a single rejection. That's very impressing. Good luck with your decision!
-
congratulations, gooner! Is there already info on funding? I won't get my decision from them, but they will contact the IIE/Fulbright and I will be contacted by them then. So I'll have to wait at least until Monday. Probably longer. Did you also have a phone interview?
-
Thank you. I also hope so. It's the first news I got from any of my schools. But I hope it won't be much longer for all of them to get back to me/us. It seems like decisions from Mizzou and UNC are already out (mine aren't, though...). Miami is soon to come. Then there's Indiana (last year, they sent out decisions in late February) and Columbia (which will take longest of all, I guess...). So the waiting game continues...

Oh my god this is wonderful. I love it! You are great and you have a great voice. I'm so sad that I don't have my guitar with me.... I'd love to take it out and sing a little bit right now. You set the right mood. Just one thing (and I'm NOT complaining): the picture above - if it's a cow, it doesn't have a ring in its nose; only bulls do ;-)
