  1. Two Mizzou PhD applicants were rejected. I didn't hear (I suppose my e-mail already is at the Austrian Fulbright Commission - but they will only forward it during business hours of course... So I'll have to wait until Monday :-(
  2. There was also somebody who repplied to Harvard (or another Ivy, I don't remember) and posted like "800/780/6.0 - I don't understand what they want from me since I got rejected for the second time" I guess those people just don't understand the question of "fit". One can be a genius - if there is nobody at the department who at least remotely shares his/her research interests and could advise him/her, then there's no chance for this person to be admitted. Also some departments require practical experience. No 1600-GRE-score can cancel out a lack of practical experience.
  3. Anyone already heard from Mizzou? Even if they send out results today, I won't hear anymore (unless they do in the next 40 minutes), because office hours in my country end soon and nobody will be there to forward the e-mail to me. Waiting drives me crazy...
  4. That doesn't sound too good. Do you plan on having a long-distance relationship? For us Fulbrighters, there are two rules (and we were notified of them already at the first meeting): 1. Don't fall in love. 2. Don't get the job of a lifetime. Also, many fellow Fulbrighters who were in a relationship when they heard that they were accepted, had to make a decision between either breaking up or getting married and moving to the US together. I'm so glad I was single at that time and didn't have to worry about things like that. But it must be hard...
  5. For me, Valentine's day is not a holiday or anything special at all. It's really more of an American tradition, I think. I'm going to the ballet with some friends. But not because of Valentine's day, but because we got very cheap tickets since it's monday. I'm really looking forward to it But still... I know the whole Valentine's crazyness only from TV and I often wonder: Is it really like that in the US? Then I think I will lock myself in my closet on February 14th next year
  6. That's naive. There are already so many developments that no one in the world should be hungry or in the need of water. Those developments you are talking about are of course important and necessary and brought us to where we are now. But it's a myth that it's because of "helping people". It's about profit, not about helping the poor and hungry. Why are there still so many people in the world that are hungry/thirsty, can't read, die because of diseases which could be cured in an instant, etc. - It's because science and knowledge is not shared. Because there is no huge profit in giving knowledge/development to people who need it.
  7. I have no idea what's going on here. But I love the cat-pictures
  8. I read almos all results from this year and the racist-hater-commenter is just one person cursing hat himself. It's always the same style, and noone is responding. Well, probably another applicant gone crazy I hate it that people post results which can in no case be true (i.e. accepances before the deadline was even over; more acceptances to one program than they allow in one year etc.) It makes me question all the other (hopefully true) results that were posted. I'm also wondering whether those GRE-results (see thread) can be true. Some are like "oh my god, I got 800/800 and only 5 on analytical writing; should I kill myself?"... It's really ridiculous and it makes me (and probably many others as well) feel bad...
  9. Does it also depend on whether you already have a Master's degree in this field or not? Or is it all the same no matter if you already hold an advanced degree in this field or not? (I'm sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, but I don't know that much about the system in the US)
  10. Yes, I understand. They were also telling me that I should expect 5-6 years to finish. But the "official" duration of most degrees (or the minimum duration) is three years, right?
  11. I'll give you my skype name once I have something to celebrate. Now I'm just waiting. But Mizzou is supposed to send out results by the end of this week (which would be tomorrow). I'll let you know
  12. I agree. I don't drink beer. But I'd be happy to have a glass of vine with all of you once I finally get my first response/acceptance
  13. I don't really understand... Most PhDs in the US also take 3 years to complete...
  14. Just for posting this message I'd like to say I love you, but I don't know if this is considered appropriate in the US (by the way, I used the same method and I counted 21 - but I'll have another look)
  15. I know you'll all probably post your result in the results-section. But please also write a short note here in this forum. I'm going to hear later than you all, because my response is going to be forwarded by several people until it reaches me. This way I can at least prepare for what's coming...
  16. I'm sorry. I guess I WAS pretty rude. It's just that those were all things I never really thought about and to me they kind of sounded weird. But I understand now and when you have a question, just post it and I'll be happy to help. (Although I'm an international student and I also learn A LOT from this forum here. Things in the US seem to be a lot less formal than where I come from; calling professors by their first name - no no. Wearing sweatpants to class - no no no no no! --- But I'm looking forward to things being a little bit more relaxed in the US...)
  17. I don't really know what a Housing Co-Op is, but I've been living in a dorm for seven years now and I LOVE IT! I love the community. I love how I can live together with people from all different parts of the world. I love to cook together. I love the parties. I love that there's always somebody around if I want company and that I can close my door and have some time in peace if I want to. I've never lived in my own appartment and I'd love to live in a similar setting as a PhD student as well.
  18. InquilineKea posts some really strange questions here... "Is it common to ask a person to repeat something?" "Do professors care if you wear sweatpants?" "Is it common to tell your adviser that you're too busy?" "I've heard Columbia University provides free housing..." I don't want to be rude, but I keep thinking that he/she just posts strange questions for the fun of others taking them seriously and responding.
  19. Oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god... Mizzou would be the PERFECT fit for me (according to me and according to my contact person at the Fulbright Commission who chose this school for me) What if they don't want me? It would be my first decision. It would be my first decision of this sort ever (as I already mentioned we don't have to apply for university where I come from). Oh my god, I'm really getting nervous. I'm gonna tell you right away: I'll need some SERIOUS pep talk if I get rejected. Sputnik: Do you have any news from UI Bloomington, too? Or are you planning to call/e-mail them? Last year the results were sent out in early/mid February. And: Has anyone been interviewed by Mizzou?
  20. Hi! That was me. The thing is: I'm a Fulbrighter. We were only allowed to write two essays (SoP and research interests) for our applications. We weren't allowed to write "specialized" essays for each school. So we couldn't mention any details about a program or any names of professors we would like to work with or projects we would like to participate in. That's unfortunate. So UMiami contacted my contact person at the Fulbright Commission and she forwarded an e-mail to me just saying that they want a Letter of Intent (what is this exactly, by the way? Google tells me it's basically the same as the SoP, but I don't want to repeat myself) explaining which faculty members I would like to work with in the course of my thesis. I already started writing. I'm mentioning three faculty members - is that common/okay? Am I supposed to "rank" them, beginning with the person I would like most to work with? (Now I just listed them alphabetically and explained my reasons for each name in a short paragraph). The email did not state any deadline. It just said "as soon as possible". I hope this helped and I hope nobody of UMiami is reading this forum. But I'm not at all familiar with the application process at US universities and so with every step of the process many many questions arise...
  21. I didn't understand anything beyond paragraph 4, but I'll just say it's because English isn't my first language. But I like stuff like this. I'm a big fan of calculating everything, esp. probabilities... Love it!
  22. I applied for the PhD in Mass Communications.
  23. still nothing... I think the schools I should hear of first are Missouri and Iniana (in mid February, I hope...). But I'll keep you (or this forum) updated... this is the first time in my life going through an application process like this (we don't need to apply for college/university where I come from) and it's all new to me. So if I get rejected I'm going to mourn and whine here on this forum. And if I get accepted, you can be sure I'm going to celebrate here as well
  24. So it's not problem for internationals to get a credit card? And what about paying rent - does this count as credit history?
