  1. I also just got a rejection letter in the mail. I am in NYC (SSRC is based in Brooklyn), the letter was postmarked February 5th. If you don't get that letter between today and monday, you might still be hopeful
  2. OK, here's my take. I Went to MAPSS (I was in your same position deciding between UChicago, New School and Berkeley for MA). I really loved it. It really did help me towards being prepared for a Phd degre and I got 3 letters of recommendation from UChicago faculty. Now, when I applied to Phd programs I didn't do too terribly well, but I think that has to do with the current economic context as well. I know some people who, after doing MAPSS, have gained entrance to places like Berkeley, Columbia, Harvard, Yale and to the University of Chicago itself. My thought is that it is an extremely good program, but a lot of it is going to be based on how well you choose your courses (because you can basically take whatever you want), how well you do at them and how good of a relationship you build with your professors. Unlike some of the people who have commented about MAPSS here, I never had a problem choosing an advisor, nor did I ever feel that I was shunned away for being a MAPSS student (and not, say, a Phd), but then I developed a good relationship with every single professor that I worked with and participated in class. In other words, you will probably get a lot out of this program, but you have to work your part as well.
  3. I am pondering the possibility of applying to the University of Cambridge, in England. I know that it is about 50 miles away from London and that it is a university town. But other than that, can anyone give any more information about what it is like living there? Is the access to London easy? Is housing and the cost of living generally expensive? What is the quality of the entertainment in the area? etc. Thanks!
  4. Yeah. I saw two emails from friends of mine. It was 99 people who got that email. I wonder who they sent it too (rejected, yes, but what tier of rejections this was, I wonder).
  5. I second that. I wonder if those still waiting have a chance at all. Judging from previous years, maybe it's not impossible that they'll end up sending out more acceptance letters starting this coming week. I also know two more people who have got accepted who are not part of this forum, so... I guess that brings the number up to 8 accepted people.
  6. I think it's really weird that I have heard of no one else getting a notice of admision from Berkeley. I know at least 5 other people who applied there and they haven't heard anything either. I wonder if every professor is writing a personal letter (which would justify the letters being sent so sparsely).
  7. 10%? That's not that bad! Thanks for that piece of info. I think I have a pretty strong application but not having been accepted to UCLA (presumably) has really destroyed my morale over the weekend (even if I didn't really want to go there)
  8. I am freaking out as well. I wish I had not seen that post about Berkeley because now there's absolutely nothing I can do but hit the refresh button on my email application. It's a good thing that the forums came back online though. I hope the person who got accepted shows up here soon and tells us how he got notified. BTW, Anyone knows typically how many people apply to Sociology at Berkeley and how many get accepted?
