  1. Thanks, IrishScientist--I am pretty thrilled. Persiandoc, I'm an archaeologist. It is my first choice, but a lot depends on whether my POI is there. There's a chance he won't be. I'm waiting for news on that end before I start torturing myself with decision-making. I love Chicago a lot, and I know I would be very happy there. My partner is also a PhD student there, so it would make his life easier for us to be back there... It's going to be either a really easy decision (if the prof. stays there), or a really difficult one (if he leaves). IrishScientist, now that I know you're on the waitlist, I'll keep you informed of my decision, for sure!
  2. They accepted 19, the waitlist is 10. They are planning on an entering class of 15 or so. So, good job on making on the waitlist! There is still hope (and hey, I'll see how many people I can talk out of accepting at the prospie weekend!) ;-)
  3. I'm the arch acceptance at UChicago on the results... From what I've heard from others, the acceptances have been sent out, but no one I know has gotten either rejections or notifications that they are on the waitlist. So there's still some hope--there is a waitlist!
  4. Best day of my life, thus far!

      Very nice! Congratulations!

  5. Does anyone know when the new FLAS fellowships are announced? The funding package from a couple of my schools make it seriously important for me, now...
  6. Thought I'd get this thread started, since the announcements seem to be out today. Congrats!
  7. Just got offered admission in Anthropology! Haven't decided yet, but it's great news and I may be there!
  8. So applying to Chicago to work with Kolata? I'm doing the Eurasian steppe--specifically the emergence of political complexity in the Trans-Urals.
  9. 1. No, but I'm doing it anyway, too. 2. Dream, but tentatively... any way you can find out what number you are on the waitlist? 3. Yes! It means you aren't out of the running yet!
  10. I would avoid stalling. What if it isn't an offer of acceptance, but just an interview? And they decide not to give you an offer because you seem difficult to get ahold of (i.e., not too interested)? Standard procedure is that you are offered an acceptance, you say thank you, and then by April you decide which offer to accept.

  12. It would be nice if there were a way to filter out the "Other" category. I mean, it may be useful, if you're searching for information from a particular school, but having it included in all results makes for a lot of junk. Also, do the people trying to engage in conversations and ask questions not realize that there is a forum for just that purpose, only a mouse-click away?
  13. I don't have an answer, but share the same question!
  14. Check out the "City Guide" Forum on the main menu--there's a topic for Ithaca.
  15. True that. Thanks, closetgeek!
  16. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but the state thing? I went to high school, undergrad, and MA institution in IL, but I am living in VT and the address on my file is here. But I may be in a PhD program in NY or PA, or IL... How do they determine what state an applicant represents?
  17. I agree with everyone about contacting current students, so good move doing that. I would be very skeptical about a funding package that dries up after two years. They know there's no way to finish a PhD in that time, so it's an easy way for them to get slave labor out of you (through TAships) for the subsequent ten years while you try to find the time to do your own research and writing... Or, you're out in two years with a compensatory MA. Try to find a guarantee of better funding. Two years with no promises *in writing* for more to follow is a kind of scam, in my opinion. To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't accept this funding myself. I think it's a particularly risky situation for an international student. And I think the school probably knows that and should be ashamed of themselves. Also, what state? I would be willing to bet some people on this forum have some experience or knowledge about some of the larger state systems, at least... NY, CA?
  18. Sometimes a certain person on the adcom is tasked with informing acceptees, sometimes it's split up between the committee members, and sometimes your stated POI contacts you independently. I wouldn't read *too* much into it, just respond with thanks!
  19. I vote that you can be honest about why you're in the neighborhood. I've got two POIs who know each other (friendly, even) and they are both aware of all of my progress in the application process. For example, one accepted me, the other said congratulations (and is still working to get me into his school). Professors know better than anyone what this process entails and that there should be as few bridges burnt in the process as possible.
  20. Rosalee, if you send the email tonight or early in the day tomorrow, there's little chance they won't read it until Monday morning... It might be nice to give them a heads up. On the other hand, it might be better to temporarily put aside the fact that you *know* you're accepting school A, and admit the situation (that you have the other offer) in your interview with school B. That way, they know you're thinking seriously about your offers, it presents the possibility that you'll be going somewhere else to them in a tentative way, and it may actually lead them to tell you that it's a better offer and better fit than they can provide, and you should accept it right away!
  21. https://www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp/Login.asp?topage=AdmissionStatus.asp That's the page for status updates, it links from http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gasaa/admissions/applicat.htm (Decision Status). Good luck to you, too! Maybe we'll be lucky enough to end up at the same place! What kind of arch do you do?
  22. I suspect that (in archaeology) knowing a lot about your geographic area of interest is less important than HAVING a geographic area of interest. I was really vague in my first application season about where I wanted to work and that lack of specification was a very weak point in my application, that time around.
  23. The widely spread belief that Chicago anthro has bad departmental politics, in my experience, is nonsense. I think it was true 10 years ago, but it's a great environment now. Professors are good at keeping any critical opinions of other professors to themselves and there's no competition among the students over funding, now that everyone is fully funded. I found it to be a really warm environment. As for MedAnthro, there are some students doing interesting work there, so I think there's a community building for it, but most of the SocAnth students aren't super excited about bio-anything (to sciencey). As for Northwestern, I second the assessment that it is a good program for MedAnth.
  24. It looks like UCLA has been slowly updating their online notification. People have reported rejections; mine still says undecided. You can check from the UCLA Grad Division website. Word from multiple sources at UChicago confirm that decisions have been made, sent upstairs, awaiting confirmation, to be sent out next week!
  25. 30. I don't think it's made any difference in my application success, but then I look young and took a while to complete my BA, so (if you assume people are 22 at graduation) it looks on paper like I'm 24 or 25! HAH! :-)
