  1. Of course, they do it differently this year... I just got home and was ready to check my status. Gah :(. I think I'll be better for when it actually comes in. Counting down hours is terrible. I'm not predicting anything else for the rest of my life. The end.

  2. I got the financial aid status email. They really shouldn't send that today.. Or wait, if I got it later than some of you, does that mean I'm rejected?

I think it's more likely because I sent my tax papers last week. :). Good luck guys!!!

  3. Hey, some good news for me, funding from GW! Hooray. A little spot of good news amongst all this waiting.

    Yay!!!! Congrats!!!

Yes, we are officially the most nervous prospective students so far. I've been so unproductive at work today. I keep trying to check this thread from my phone when students aren't in my room hehe. Love you guys! Everyone else is like "what does one extra day matter? You'll find out eventually."

  4. I already opened the bubbly... Oops. Couldn't help myself. LOLHere's to good or bad news. *sip*

    Cheers!

And I officially cannot sleep. I wish I had a really boring chemistry textbook to read. It used to help me fall asleep when I was in high school. I really hope it's tomorr

  5. Hahaha. I think tomorrow is going to require some definite drinking either way as well.

Agreed! I've got red wine ready to go. White is also in the fridge in case I run out of red. I was also supposed to have girl scout cookies, but I already ate them. Oops..

  6. That's ok. In the higher ed dept, they say that about 3/4 of the people have internships, but not grad assistantships.  I don't know about Ed Policy. I thought I remembered you talking about that on the Vandy board, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a super secret assistantship Harvard deal going on that I was unaware of :). Good luck with the Vandy assistantship and good luck tomorrow!!

  7. And I still haven't heard about the graduate assistantship and they told me they hoped to let me know by the end of last week.  I'm dying over here!

Just to clarify.. This is not at HGSE, you're talking about Vandy, right?

  8. Sorry to be posting so many times in a row, but I thought I would share my acceptance/rejection mini-playlist:

    Accepted!

    - DJ Khaled "All I do is win"

    - The Script "Hall of Fame"

    Rejected :(:

    - Gary Allan "Every Storm (runs out of rain)"

    - Shawn Mullins "Lullaby"

Anyone have any good ones to share? :)

  9. It might just be me, but I feel like finding out due to a random check of the website is less stressful than getting the e-mail and then checking the website -- maybe I'll close my mac mail and turn off my iPhone tomorrow afternoon and just check the website every 20 minutes...the anticipation and nervousness is crazy!

I'm trying to figure out what I want to do about that too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be driving when the email hits. I'm thinking about turning off my phone and waiting until I get home. I really don't want a moment like that to happen while I'm at work-- either I wouldn't be able to celebrate, or I would be trying to hold back tears. Either way, I couldn't be fully present at work. And trying to check my status on my phone while I'm driving (or pulling off to the side of the road) sounds like a terrible idea too. I think I'm going to turn off my phone at 3:30 CST and not check until I get home. It's going to be really REALLY difficult, but I think it's best.

  10. I just got confirmation that my financial aid went through, I had to fax in a copy of my passport today to verify that I was a citizen. Did anyone else have to do this?

I don't know if this is what it could be, but anytime this happens to one of my students, it's because they were born somewhere other than the United States. Usually this happens if they were born on a military base. Otherwise, I don't have any ideas.

  11. It's very possible. Layering is a great thing, especially in Massachusetts. I wear dress pants every day, and I am very warm. However, I also have a very warm coat (for the outdoors). Heating is going to be your best friend in the northeastern states. I do wear flats in the winter, but I'm used to the weather. If I wear sweaters, I wear them over short-sleeved shirts. You can  wear long sleeved shirts alone. You can stay very warm without jeans; do not worry!

Thank you so much for your advice. Sadly, weather was starting to play a bigger role than it should in the decision process.

  12. Ok, here's a question: how do you dress for the cold and do business casual? I'm picturing only being able to wear a sweater dress with really thick tights and leather boots, scarves, or a sweater over a long sleeve shirt with pants. Is that accurate? Can you actually stay warm without wearing jeans?

  13. And also... wow. I'm going through a very similar process. Slightly different reasons, but yes. Also, visit the programs! I'm holding off on any decisions until I visit because most of my knowledge about the program is what I've read on their websites. I strongly believe that when you visit "your" program, you'll know it's "the one."

  14. You have a tough decision to make... no one can really tell you what to do because in the end, it depends on which factor is most important for you. I do think that an ivy or pseudo ivy is going to have connections everywhere. However, It sounds like the internship/field work is a very important factor for you as you won't be getting your PhD and according to you, it seems that program at Stanford would focus on that. Is there a potential to get an internship/fieldwork at Stanford even if it's not required? Is that something they would be willing to work with you on?

If you were to go to Georgetown, is it doable financially or is it just a bit more expensive? If it's not doable, it really is out of the question. I don't think the subfield thing would be too much of an issue. It would open your eyes to new things that you hadn't thought of while still letting you concentrate on what you are exactly wanting to do. Who knows? Maybe your idea of what you want to do would change slightly if you had that extra background information.

UPenn seems to be the one that gives you what you want-- practitioner-wise and financially, in the type of area that you want. If the director has that kind of experience, I really don't think you're going to run into many issues. People are not going to read your resume and say "Penn? Why would you go there?" However, if it's newer, do they still have the faculty that you want?

Good luck making the decision! I know it's going to be very difficult. Hopefully that's given you a few more things to think about. Ultimately, it really is going to come down to which factor is most important to you. You'll figure it out :). And really, if you have only good options, no matter what you choose, you are going to make a good decision.

  15. 70 degrees?

    Jezeus Christé!

I'm in Alabama and even we got a little snowfall today (not a blanket, by any means, but a little sprinkle of snow).

And yeah...finding the scholarships probably take longer than actually doing the essays for them!

Yup! It got down to a "cold" 40 degrees tonight, but during the day it's pretty warm.

  16. Hahaha. I'm scared of what the winter is going to be like in other places. It's currently 70 degrees where I am right now.

As for the scholarships... I'm trying to figure that out. I'm going to my city's area foundation during Spring Break so they can help me. In the meantime, I'm on random internet sites. There seem to be scholarships for people who want to be teachers, but not that much for those who want to participate in other parts of education.

  17. also, it'll give me something to do rather than just sit here and share nervous energy. waiting is driving me crazy but seeing that some ppl have got into places is driving me crazier!

Yay! Welcome :). It definitely has kept my mind off of Tuesday. I'm up to 7 with a potential 8 and 9. Darn ones I have to print out and mail in!

  18. Haha. It is taking a lot of work actually. I don't mind spending a bunch of time applying for a scholarship, but finding them is tough. It's much easier to find scholarships for undergrad. Oh well. I'm starting by looking at external scholarships links on different ed school sites. So far, I've applied to a pathetic 2 scholarships, but hoping I can get up to my goal within the 100 days :).

  19. Exactly! It does make you wonder if you want to invest into a program that's only lukewarm when it comes to important things. When I told one of recommenders (a former professor and a good friend of mine) I was applying to grad school, he advised to really pay attention to the communication with both the school and professors, and said that was a good predictor of what it would be like to attend school there. That advice has been ringing in my head as I was applying and now as I consider my admissions offers.

It sucks that there's not much information on your program out there. It seems like TC is high on your list, so if you can, I would ask them to put you in touch with current students so you can hear what they have to say about the program. Straight from the horse's mouth, to use a hackneyed phrase. ;)

This is fantastic advice. Definitely something to keep in mind as we are making our decisions!
