  1. I got accepted to UC Santa Barbara for Ph.D yesterday! I just got an automated email linking me to the decision website, so I was thrown off when it was actually good news

Is there anyone on the forum with info about the program and/or funding?

Yay!!! Congratulations! While I've never been there personally, I've heard UCSB is gorgeous :).

  2. Yes!  You must stay optimistic.  Until you find out it's a no, believe it will be a yes!  I am looking forward to good news for you.  I checked the results page and while there was some disappointment, there is also great news for people and amazing doors being opened.  I have a feeling that you are getting ready to walk through one of those amazing doors.  Let us know when it happens!!!!!!

Awww :( I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, Eager. I think your plan is good. Take some classes, make some contacts and things will be ok. If that's truly where you want to be, it will work out eventually.

You're an incredible person with so much grace and humility. Most people would have stopped going on gradcafe all together. I know there's the saying that nice guys finish last, but I definitely think it's false. I think karma is definitely going to play a role in your life. You're going to get something that's even better and life will be good. Still rooting for you :)

  3. Geesh, you are that stressed and you have already been accepted to UCLA!!??

Imagine the kind of stress I'm feeling, I just received my third reject today, no acceptances, interviews or waitlists so far!!!

Be THANKFUL that you have a choice next fall!!!!!!

Nonetheless, best of luck with the rest of your schools :)

You're right. I don't mean to be ungrateful, I promise. Sorry :(. This is my second time applying (well, to graduate school). The first time, I got rejected from all nine schools I applied to with no interviews, so trust me, I really do understand how frustrating it can be.

I think I'm just one of those people that has HUGE issues with uncertainty. I'm a planner. I also started rethinking the program at UCLA and am not sure if I would rather work than go to their program... so I think that's probably also what's going on.

For those of you waiting for your first acceptance, I wish you extra luck!

  4. Oh, and their whole site is down. I was trying to see if I still had an "incomplete" status, but the site won't work. Maybe they're adding our materials to our status check pages? :). That whole incomplete nonsense is ridiculous.

  5. I don't know if this helps since I'm a master's applicant, but they sent out an email saying that decisions would be made in late February/early March. I also got a pretty intense schedule about what the internship picking process would be like. Eight interviews in one day for the internship?!

  6. Totally feel you, Loseric. I applied to six schools and have only heard from one. Am starting to feel like maybe I just dreamt the whole application process and didn't actually submit anything. Heh. Hang in there.

Pretty much same here. I've heard from one of my seven schools. I'm expecting to hear from Penn next week around Wednesday or so and then a bunch the last week in February and first week of March. I just wish the emotional roller coaster of self-doubt one minute, confidence the next would subside. My body is even feeling the effects of it. JUST TELL ME ALREADY :(. I don't know if I'll be east or west coast, let alone which state I'll live in. Do I need to buy a new wardrobe? Buy a bunch of plane tickets to visit programs?

Can anyone prescribe me a sleeping pill that would allow me to wake up in three weeks?

  7. For FOUR damn hours last night, I was tossing and turning because I was having a dream about pushing refresh on one of my status pages and certain grad cafe topics... I also think I'm getting stress related nausea and back pain. I seriously think the people at work think I'm a hypochondriac. My body is even losing it! :(. Can't wait until March 15th so that all of this craziness is over and I can be a normal person again.

  8. I am prepared for the Mountain o' Loans. I wish my last name was Skywalker so I could have qualified for all those Jedi restricted scholarships...

I'm with you on the loans. I'm lucky enough to have no debt from undergrad and some money saved up... But yes, I would definitely pay full price for Harvard. Please accept me? 3 more weeks!!!

  9. Sadly, my hope for the wait list has been extinguished - I got an official rejection from the PhD program. :( But, a few days later, I was admitted to one of their Master's program that I had applied to, so that's comforting!

Awww :(. But yay for getting accepted into master's! That's no easy task either.

Those of you with 1/15 or 1/16 completion dates.. can you post on here when you hear back? I'm getting pretty anxious. I hit my four weeks today!

  10. It sounds like you're still in undergrad based on the thirty hours to complete. Is there a particular reason you want to go straight into grad school? Would you ever consider taking a year or two off to get some experience in Higher Ed? Having some experience under your belt would make you a more competitive candidate and compensate for some grades. Especially in Higher Ed, they are interested in the experiences that led you to apply. Also, a bunch of the job opportunities for master's degree candidates require several years of experience (I'm a little nervous going in with only two full-time years :/). If you have a particular job in mind that requires a master's with limited full-time experience, then that's great! I just haven't found many in my area, so I thought I would throw that out there.

That's not to discourage you, especially if you are ready to apply in December, just to make you think a little bit. I'm not sure which part of Higher Ed you want to go into, but admissions counselors are always up on the job boards. Admissions counselor positions are perfect for people coming right out of undergrad. They pay $30,000-35,000 per year (not the best, but it could be a little better than retail pay?), possibly higher depending on the location. There's also a fairly high turnover, so there are more job available. It would also give you some experience to see one side of the university and then you would have an easier time switching to positions within that university. Something else to think about: if you get a job at a university and get a master's with them, they will pay for part of the degree. You sounded like you were concerned about money, so I thought I would mention that. Good luck!!! :)

Everyone on this board is really friendly and happy to answer questions. None of us are experts because we've all just applied, but feel free to ask away :).

  11. It's just that it seems that they are running behind their 4 week notification and the later our "application complete" dates are, the later we will probably find out, in my opinion. That is just me guessing so I'm not anxiously refreshing my inbox once tomorrow comes :). I just assume that the closer we waited until the deadline, the more applications they will have to review, so it will take longer for us to find out.

  12. ok....

First, hello to all....and good luck to all....

I just checked my account again and my checklist has reappeared. HMMMMMM.....

    Secondly,

Just because lunches and activities are being planned does not mean that people are not still getting invites. i strongly believe that this is the week for invites to go out. Stay strong everybody. Post often and much so that we can support each other during this very trying time....Don't give up!! I have decided that if I don't get an invite by Friday, then i will make ready for plan B. However, people on here have called admissions, etc. and been told that invites have not gone out yet. I am not in panic mode....yet...

About the checklist: I don't think it means anything. When you guys started talking about it on here, I started looking at mine. The checklist disappeared and then magically returned today. It was probably a glitch in their system.

  13. Well that's terrible. Now I have to begin worrying. I had been assuming all the current results would be for Higher Ed or Doctoral programs.

Don't worry yet, but it is a little disconcerting. It seems like their decisions are spread out. Still really early though...

  14. I'm currently in a studio and I'm happy without a sitting area. I just use my couch and eat dinner in front of my laptop like Tall Chai. However, because it's a studio, I rarely have friends over. I always go out or to their places. If you want friends to come over for dinner a bunch, you need that sitting area. Otherwise, you'll be fine without it.

  15. I've been getting into chocolate covered frozen bananas lately. Obviously, you can only enjoy this when you are at home. I just microwave a bar of really dark chocolate (even though I like milk chocolate much better) with some peanut butter, spread it on banana slices, and freeze. One hour later you have a yummy snack and a serving of fruit.

  16. Hi highered2013,

My app was complete on 1/3/2013... and my decision link appeared yesterday (2/8), though the Penn GSE email telling me my decision was ready came today! Good luck!

Thank you for the information! I'm hoping to hear back soon. Congratulations again!!!

  17. Thought I'd share this great TED talk while we all wait on decisions about how we make our own happiness and how in fact when given a lack of chose we often end up happier with our decision.

    http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_gilbert_asks_why_are_we_happy.html

I actually thought back about some recent small and major decisions and honestly this talk really made lot of sense with what I ended up being happy with. Very interesting stuff!

I love Dan Gilbert! Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing!!

  18. My boyfriend and I (of 4 years) are both applying to Ph.D programs this year. It kind of annoys me that more often than not the first question out of people's mouths when they find out I'm applying is along the lines of "So, are you and (boyfriend) trying to go to the same school?". I understand the question, but the fact that I get it before "What are you going to grad school for?" or "Where are you applying?" bothers me. It bothers me more that he told me he never gets asked that.

Yes!!! This is so annoying. I say "I got accepted!!" And before they ask "for what," they ask "What are you and your S.O. going to do???"
