  1. I had planned to make campus visits, but my mom is very ill and I'm pretty much living at the hospital with her so that's just not going to happen. I believe that I can find out what I need to know about each school's programs via email, but I would still like a portrait of the "curb appeal" of each town. If possible, I would like to attend a school with an attractive campus and some access to night life. I also am not a "big city" or urban person; I need woods to escape to for bike rides and walks.
  2. I also received an acceptance email. I'm actually leaning towards Kentucky right now; what about you?
  3. I love that movie! What quote did you use? And dear God, surely that can't just notify a few people each Thursday until the end of time--or April 15! That would just be cruel.
  4. Amen. I bet the flood gates will open tomorrow though. Didn't they send the first notifications last week about this time?
  5. But it's such a scary question! Lols. No, really, I think we should probably wait to at least the end of this week before we start hassling them.
  6. Does UA even do graduate housing anymore? From what I could surmise from the website, it seemed like they had turned the only place that was for grads into freshman dorms.
  7. Today I had a fortune cookie...and it didn't have a fortune in it!!!! Agggggggghhhhh. Couldn't some force in my life be decisive? All I was looking for was a vague, conciliatory, "Good fortune smiles upon you," or some other good nonsense. Really, Universe, really? Are you sure you wanna mess with a crazy lady?
  8. At this point I just wanna know. There are two schools I'm pretty sure I've been rejected from, but they keep telling me that they're still making decisions and no one has been rejected yet. Agony! And btw, a walk sounds lovely!
  9. Did the DGS say anything about funding for MAs or creative writing peeps?
  10. Lols. I got a call today that came up as "Salt Lake City, UT," and totally reamed the poor, flustered woman at the other end of the line when I found she was merely a telemarketer. We've got like, what, two more weeks of this crap? Chins up, people, chins up!
  11. Congrats to all of you who were accepted!! Gosh, I truly hope they haven't notified the MA people yet...
  12. I don’t know if this interests anyone or not, but I finally broke down and called today--no alias, no payphone, just me. The director was surprisingly nice and told me that they are still in the process of making decisions and that we should expect to hear something--if the news is positive--sometime next week. Tick tock.
  13. Do English Ma/Phd programs with a film focus count? P.S. I also love Mr. Hartman. Too bad that his crazy wife killed him.
  14. I just want to make it clear that I'm not trying to be snooty; I'm genuinely curious. Oh, dear. I will probably I have to become a beer aficionado once I embrace the poverty that is graduate school. On a different note, what does "history-ish" phd mean exactly?
  15. Ugh. Vodka and gin. Yuck, Yuck. I'm a tequila person who enjoys the occasional rum and coke or a shot of Jack. And why is it that so many humanities people are obsessed with beer? The only time I really care for a beer is Molson with a slice of really good pizza.
  16. I've actually considered doing that! lols
  17. I would try to get in contact with your recommender to get them to complete the rec. as soon as possible. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, but it's generally your responsibility to confirm that your application is complete, not the school's. Even if the website says your file is complete, it's always best to check with the department to make doubly sure you're in the clear; grad school records and department records don't always match. I didn't know this the first time I applied and found out the hard way. That being said, it does seem like there may have been some error on the department's end and it seems to me if you get your LOR in soon you will still have a fair chance. If they were'nt impressed by what they had seen already, they wouldn't bother to take the time to get more information. Good luck!
  18. Arggh. I really am tempted to call them up tomorrow and be like, "Really?" But then I don't want to mess with adcoms who will only be pissed at me. They've got enough on their plates without some crazy girl calling them 24/7, lol.
  19. Many schools don't formally notify applicants that they've been placed on the waitlist. Have you tried calling the schools to ask them about your status?
  20. Frozen three musketeers are lovely, but I would substitute The Bachelor for True Blood or an old movie.
  21. It’s finally the last week of February. Damn, this month was long. We’re getting there, people! This weekend I watched The Paper Chase as a distraction from the fact that the only new e-mails in my inbox were from Urban Outfitters and Facebook. It proved to be an excellent diversion! While not exactly about the grad admissions process, it should be relevant to all of you as it’s about the struggles of a grad student--well, a law student. I’m curious if any of you could recommend other movies concerning admissions/graduate school/life after college; movies to keep us entertained while we chase that most coveted piece of paper--an acceptance letter. Any ideas?
  22. At least one conduit of information will remain open. No post, though. Well, I guess that's alright, I've come to dread snail mail a bit as it only seems to bear evil news.
  23. This may be a dumb question, but what school does the thread refer to? I thought at first that it was U of South Carolina, but someone mentioned California and now I'm very confused. Help?
  24. Anybody heard from them yet? Based off of the results from last year, it should be someday soon...
