  1. I got this notification today too and authorized my dean to send my materials. Good luck to you and good luck to me.
  2. Then you should seriously think about dropping out of the process since it appears there will be a further winnowing down.
  3. I don't think it does. I went back and checked my records, and I found out on April 28 last year. So it was the end of April, not the beginning. Apologies for the incorrect info.
  4. I don't think it was in May. I think it was early April last year.
  5. Yeah. I applied for the Fulbright as well. Hopefully it comes through.
  6. I'm going to have to decline mine too, and I hate too, but I've really got to teach this summer to make some money.
  7. Isn't there an SSRC award for pre-dissertation research support?
  8. Maybe SSRC? I know it's "Social Science Research Council", but I've been told in the past that they aim to fund more humanities-focused topics.... Of course, I may be wrong...
  9. on that note it might also be worthwhile to ask about odd-jobs that people pick up to supplement their income. I got work as a grader one semester, and another i did proofing for Ford Foundation students from other countries. In this case it could be that a couple of hundred dollars a month can make a big difference. Also maybe ask about teaching in the summer at your university or if there are any community colleges around teaching there. For me this has been a way to make a significant amount of money over the course of 6 weeks.
  10. They didn't offer you a tuition waiver? at my school i think 25% TA means half time TA. In other words, at my university TAships are .5 time, and some positions (very few that I am aware of) are half of that. It's a lighter workload, but less pay and for us you don't have access to the state insurance plan.
  11. If you don't have any pending decisions and think you can handle waiting, sure. But if you are dying to know I don't think it would hurt to email them. No one is going to retract an offer because you seemed to eager. And I would imagine pretty much everyone would understand; we've all been there. But emailing someone allows them to answer your question on their time.
  12. I don't think it's pushy at all to ever request more information about stuff like that. but i would do it via email.
  13. I think 4 years is pretty good actually. I assume you are doing PhD and there are a lot of funding opportunities out there. It all depends on your field. But as you go on you will learn more and more about them. My only advice would be to start learning about them early on and practice writing proposals, learn as much about the processes as you can and maybe even try applying before your school funding runs out, because a lot of funders will send you feedback if they reject you.
  14. Cool. I went there for my international development masters...took some courses from poli sci guys. there are a lot of internships available in DC....some paid....of course you probably don't want to do an internship while in a phd program...
  15. congrats. what school? I don't know of anything you could get for the coming fall. maybe someone else does.
  16. I don't think you can defer an NSF fellowship
  17. It is on my campus. As far as I've seen, these positions are usually advertised on campus or on the campus employment website. I know people that are both TAs and RAs outside the department.
  18. That's a pretty sweeping statement, don't you think?
  19. Hello. First congrats. Second, I think this varies depending on the school and the degree (masters/phd). At my school the people that get them have the best chances the following year (masters) and have them guaranteed for phd. Maybe you should ask them directly? Or go on their department website and ask one of the students in the program, but first see if you can google and see which students are TAs.
  20. if you are talking about the FLAS for summer it varies depending on the school. i've gotten that award several times from my uni and it all depends on how many people they have apply. the decisions, at my university at least, are all made within the university.
  21. I got the request too. I'm not expecting to hear anything until at least the middle of next month, though (though I don't have any basis for that expectation other than timetables for other grants and previous years).
  22. Good for you, anthro. congrats. and thanks for the info from the other poster.
  23. Which NSF program are you referring to? Is it the DDRI? I'm curious about the DQ for being in school for too long and when that kicks in....
  24. Hi Belalong. I got the same email. I'm at the university of hawaii in geography. are you a vulcanologist? did you apply for the advanced group too?
  25. Hi there. I got in for advanced Indonesian as well. Some one earlier mentioned that the info was available on the application site.... I got an email with the acceptance, but is there any other information available? like who else got in?
