  1. If adcoms are silent try contacting more people from the department. I was in the same situation and mass-emailed the department inquiring my application status, and a small percentage of them replied. Whether it means rejection or not is not clear, as it depends on the program. For example, in my case most of the programs have finished notifying successful applicants few weeks ago, but JHU neuro program has only started reviewing international applications this week.
  2. msdostoevsky, thanks for the information. In the light of what you and other posters say here it becomes very amusing to read on the program website what they think about themselves: at the interview, I told the prof that what I like about the program is that they're not competitive, but collaborative instead. He was quick to correct me by noting that, the're collaborative only from the inside.
  3. That sounds quite strange, since your can always run Windows (and hence Win softwares) on Mac no problem http://www.apple.com/macosx/compatibility/ (alternatively, you can install virtual machine like VMWare and also use Win software within Mac operating system)
  4. Sorry, but for that applications fee I would like to be notified ASAP regardless of the decision. Thanks
  5. Actually, I think that not contacting your program by yourself, especially in the case when supposed deadline for decision has passed, is just dangerous. Imagine, what if you app was somehow missed or handled incorrectly in the process? And that's why you haven't heard still while all others had... Taking up action early can save the situation.
  6. Hi msdostoevsky! I'm happy for your interview went well. I applied for Neuroscience program, and to be honest I didn't like my interview that much, it had such an arrogant and aggressive tone In my case, I was asked to elaborate on some points in my SOP - about project ideas rather than previous research experience. Next, the interviewer started interrogating me in which papers had I read, on the topics of my interest. That was very confusing and I wasn't prepared for that kind of question - I read a lot of papers, and I don't keep a complete list of references in front of me all the time. He probably wanted me to pick up one paper and discuss it, but I couldn't quickly think of any I would remember in sufficient details. I managed to push out some random paper off the top of my head and told about it in a few sentences. Next, I discussed some ideas for projects again, all in hurry and I really got feeling it was all in vain. After the interview I've asked what chances of getting admitted are, and got a reply they have ~180 applications from internationals for only two spots, so it's better to have a plan B. However, the interviewer have found my interview "interesting". oh Thanks! All in all, although the interviewer told me he likes my app, I got a perception of him trying to "catch" or drown me.

  10. My advice would be to send an email to the POI, just write it properly so that you will sound interested in the program, rather than being pushy and aggressive.
  11. then it is even more strange that my single, lonely questions were noticed right after they were posted, while floods of offensive comments left unnoticed for days despite of the fact they even led users to create topics dedicated to them on this forum... anyway
  12. I've explained in previous posts that there are cases when asking questions on the results board seem to be justified; if the "owners" of this result board still disagree - well, they have a right to. I have no interest to force anyone to return my questions back. The emotional charge in my message is because that's a second time my questions are deleted, and when it happened first time, as I told before, my absolutely neutral questions were deleted at the same time while other offensive, racist and sexist comments (unrelated to my posts) were filling the results board and nobody seemed to take any care of it. Henceforth, I decided there is something completely wrong with this result board, and decided to clarify it here. If everything is actually ok then I'm happy with it.
  13. I would have to disagree. I'm watching this board for a while and have noticed people reply to questions being asked of them quite often. I don't think question can break the privacy. The answer can, but nobody has to provide an answer. That's a question of personal philosophy. The whole Internet thing was made to help people gain information they need for free - without the requirement to pay other people, or - for those in poor - without the need to bend under other people worldviews and/or having to make false friendships. If my message seemed "entitled" to you then I'm sorry, just a little nervous. That's why this topic was created in the first place. Thanks. Will definitely start a thread later when I'll have time. A progress can't be made without having to flout-flout some rules. Anyway, I don't want to go into long forum battles here and suggest you not to spent too much time, too.
  14. they could do this as well before. there are not too much replies for any single program, so even if some posts come from same person it doesn't make the whole thing cluttered... that's very controversial I would say... not everyone who visits the result board is registered on this forum. so there are people who can answer questions related to their post on the result board but will never bother to look up your question here. all in all, these were very well focused questions that does not provoke a long, bloated discussion that would make the results board "cluttered". if they were I'd post them on the forum, but so far I don't see the reason why a little questioning would be harmful for the results board.
  15. I don't think there is any of your fault or anything you could do better - all in all, it is impossible to make everyone love you, there will always be some people who find you cocky, entitled, etc. regardless of what you do! You and the POI who had interviewed you are probably just very different people who won't understand/appreciate each other, just because they're different, that's it.
  16. hi there I would love to see some advices on that topic too, since I have an interview at JHU on Thursday
  17. "A well-mannered lady should not ask questions on the results board"
  18. There are definitely some other reasons apart from "backup plan" - they have an official waiting list to do this! I'm currently trying to pull out answer from MIT BCS and all I'm getting, is that, "you'll get an answer in mid-April"! no word on waitlist though, and some faculty members insist that if I didn't get an interview invite, then it means "I wasn't accepted or waitlisted" - neither first nor second, then what? and why the waiting until 15 april is mandatory before I'm notified on the decision that was made back in January (when all interview invites have been sent out)???
  19. I doubt it - my musings were removed once from the board well before spam button was introduced (at the same time, offensive racist comments weren't deleted)
  20. the silence from other POI means they're busy and have too much email in their mailboxes, I guess! in any case, it is better if you send as many emails to as many POI as you can, that will only increase you chances of finding someone who you'd like to work with and who'll take you at the same time. especially, when you have a good excuse - you're looking for an advisor - you'll not appear bugging anyway. try also sending your email in the morning by university time - when POIs have just came to the office and is checking their mailboxes - that will increase chances your email will get noticed
  21. have you tried contacting (both) the graduate program, faculty and your POI? I did and that was somewhat helpful, even though I didn't get any good news.
  22. OK: I have seen people asking about stats of other posters on the board very often, and they get replied, so asking is actually quite helpful and beneficial, it would be wrong to make it prohibited. Regarding other questions - about something else than stats - I agree that forum is much better method for discussion, but I'm not sure it gets as many visitors as result board, plus not everyone will want to bother himself with registration, which is required for forum discussions.
  23. Grad school is looking for 2 PhD students to work on Brain-Computer Interface in Germany http://bit.ly/hygLPL

  24. One person posted for Neuroscience program at Caltech that (s)he was at the interview with 17 other people: I asked if the poster could share his stats, and maybe he knows if they gonna accept only from those 17 people (17 is not too much I guess...) but my post was deleted! I asked again, now I visit the website and guess what? it got deleted again! I wonder what is going on?
