  1. Hey, Congrats - my favorite professor got his PhD there.
  2. Sounds rough. Make sure you explore all your options. If the RA thing doesn't work out, can you get loans? A part-time job? Did you fill out a FAFSA? At the schools I applied to, many of them don't want to offer RA positions in the first year, they'd rather you be a TA, and build a relationship with a professor. Most of them aren't set up to handle new entrants in spring, they don't even offer appropriate classes in many programs. Maybe if you can you swing 1 year with no funding from the school, you can get an RA for the following year... or a fellowship... Good luck to you.
  3. Just got accepted to UC Irvine for a PhD in Economics. Yay!!
  4. Well - I found several schools accepting late applicants. Accepted at UC Irvine, with a Teaching Assistant position. Yay!
  5. Thanks... remember that there is more to life than just the path you started down, and don't do it if you're going to be miserable for the next however-many years. I've known quite a few people who left graduate school without completing because they were terribly unhappy. But, also keep in mind that there is a lot more to the educational experience than the name on your diploma, and you can have a very happy and satisfying life and education at most institutions - you largely get out of it what you put into it, and in the end, for most people, the name of the school matters little if at all.
  6. Yeah, I was originally told everything went out by the 15th, but my postmark of the 26th(!) means they were, at best, mistaken.
  7. I'm going to see what schools, if any, still have an open admission window. And see what other career options are open.
  8. Well, that's it - rejected everywhere. No idea what I'm doing now. Guess it's time to figure that out.
  9. Nothing yet. I see a bunch of results posted as people having received rejection notices yesterday, so I guess I shouldn't be too optimistic.
  10. My (business school) rejection from NYU was available on the website before they sent me an email.
  11. Great town, love the campus. There are good housing options all around. If you get tired of a college town, Kansas City is within driving range for a day or afternoon. Buy basketball tickets if you want to get into the school spirit - even if you aren't initially a basketball fan.
  12. Most of my notices were email or on the web. I did get 2 rejection letters in the mail so far, both were regular envelopes with 1 sheet of paper inside.
  13. At least at some schools, the individual faculty for the specialty appears to make or have input on the decisions, and if your specialty hasn't completed yet while others have, that could be what is going on...
  14. I've got rejections from everyone except Harvard now, just waiting to see what they say.
  15. Non-academic, yes. I'm a product manager at a medium-sized firm, and have some experinece in both government and a small start-up. One of my former professors thinks my age (36) may be a negative factor. Also, I was a non-traditional student - started in college, did only so-so, left, came back and got my degrees later.
  16. I applied to U Penn, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Cornell, MIT, Duke, Chicago, Northwestern, UCLA, Stanford and Harvard. 800/800 GRE. 4.0 GPA upper-division undergrad and MBA. Seemed like I should catch on somewhere.
  17. Well, still nothing from Harvard, but I've now heard from all 10 of the other schools I applied to. Harvard is now my only remaining hope.
  18. The mail just came today - still nothing.
  19. I'm telling myself it would take longer for a thicker package to arrive than a regular letter, but I'm probably just fooling myself.
  20. Presumably, Dean of Graduate Studies.
  21. I tried calling both last week and this week. Without asking my name, they told me both times that I would have to wait until I received notice in the mail. Last week, they told me everything had gone out by the 15th. Today, they said "You should receive something by the end of next week."
