  1. I agree with RockEater. I would also emphasize that our situation is similar to that of PhD students entering school during the 1970s (my dad was one of them). Applications to programs skyrocketed in response to the bad economy/Vietnam war dodging (no judgment here, just a fact). Consequently, when cohorts from those years graduated with their PhDs, there was a serious glut of applicants for positions. Thus, some folks had to settle for jobs outside academia or in smaller and less prestigious institutions than they would have preferred. I think that our saving grace may be -- as RockEater said -- that a number of baby boom professors will be retiring/kicking the bucket by the time we hit the market *fingers crossed*
  2. Harvard apparently invested most of its endowment in a Ponzi scheme. Lolzers. Yes, everyone is hurting, but I think on the whole state institutions took a harder hit because of state budget cuts. Again, I could be totally wrong here.
  3. I could be totally wrong about this, but I wouldn't be surprised if Duke's funding situation differs a bit from UNC's. It's a private institution with some pretty serious endowments and very loyal alums.
  4. That works for me. My interest is in very early colonial legal history with a transatlantic perspective (I have a J.D. and worked as a lawyer prior to entering the M.A. program in which I'm currently enrolled). For what I'm interested in studying, UVA has one of the best programs outside of the Ivies and William and Mary/Hopkins. All of the contact I've had with the faculty thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, and my understanding is that job placement for UVA PhDs, particularly in the south, is very good (considering how difficult it is to find a tenure track position, blah, blah blah). On top of all that, both my spouse and I are interested in moving back down south to be closer to family. That being said, I have a funded offer at my MA institution, so my decision will probably be determined by UVA's funding package. I'm also still waiting to hear from GTown.
  5. I'm in the same boat. It's definitely my top choice, but I'm not going without full funding.
  6. I'm also an Americanist and I haven't heard anything yet either. UVA seems to like to drag things out over the weekend
  7. Thanks for the heads up about the traffic! I'm in a big Northeastern city and just assumed that in comparison the traffic would be pretty light.
  8. Also, FYI, Charlottesville is only about a hour away from Richmond, VA. If I decide to go to UVA, my spouse will probably wind up working there and we'll try to live somewhere in between.

    Thanks for the update!

Thanks -- it's good to know the meeting still went off, but I agree that it's strange that they (presumably) haven't notified anyone yet.

Anyone know anything about Georgetown? I'm assuming that they were delayed by the Snowpocalypse...
  12. I'm in at UVA. Phew! They were having some sort of technical difficulty.
  13. FYI, I spoke to UVA's secretary on Friday afternoon, and she advised that the history department was attempting to notify students about acceptances between Friday and Monday, so it's possible that those who haven't heard may still get positive news early next week. On a different note, I received an email very early Saturday morning directing me to check my AY page for a link to my decision, but the link wasn't there! Anyone else have this problem? This is making me crazy!
  14. Hi! Like you, I transferred from my first undergraduate institution (a state school) to a private college. I'm currently enrolled in a history M.A. program and completed a J.D. degree prior to that. I never had any problems with the transfer during either of the application processes. As Caligula noted, you'll just need to submit transcripts from both institutions when you apply. As long as you didn't transfer to a less prestigious school (and it doesn't appear that you did) I don't think you'll have a problem. Hope this helps!
  15. I had the same problem. I called the admissions office and they said that they can't control the field for "Complete" or "Incomplete" so even if all your materials are in, your VIP page may still indicate "Incomplete"
  16. Congrats! That's awesome! FYI, for anyone who is interested, Emory has finished giving out its first round of acceptances and is hoping to finish making decisions by next week.
  17. Congrats on your acceptance and thanks for the info.
