@lyonessrampant @TakeruK Eagerly awaiting non-anonymous job market realities posts from both of you

I went on it this year. It's brutal, but we all know that. Hoping next year will be better with degree in hand, but even if I end up going alt-ac or non-ac, I've had a great experience during my Ph.D. I learned a new language, spent about a year in Italy and England, got funded to do research I love and am passionate about, and had amazing health insurance, so for me, I have zero regrets even if I don't get a TT-job.

Anybody else thinking about buying a home? My wife and I are moving together, to South Bend (she got a job working in student affairs at Notre Dame), and are finding it much more affordable and longterm economically smart to buy a home near campus.  I know Indiana is much cheaper than many places y'all are going, but I thought I'd throw it out there.  Depending on your situation a modest home could be better than six years of rent in price inflated areas.

My husband and I bought a home. Like Tybalt says, there can be down sides (we've replaced the furnace, hot water heater, and will be doing a new roof soon), but we've saved a lot of money overall compared to renting.

Ugh a bit late to this. You guys I've applied for this damn thing 5 times ..been a semifinalist 3 times and just received my 5th NS. ?

For those who are alternate and finalist feel so proud because I am so proud of you.

Good luck to everyone in waiting. If anyone has other funding suggestions to Indonesia I would love ideas!

As for me I think I'm done trying for a while. Can't even possibly fathom going through this process again. Mehhhhh

Hugs to you! I'm so sorry and hope you can find another way to do your project.

Research. I just cannot believe they gave a Fulbright to a rural 39 year old with kids. It took me 10 years to finish my undergrad... guess I'll have to fake it and act like I belong...

    Thanks for the congrats everyone!

Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!

Not gonna lie, kind of wish I'd been flat-out rejected rather than designated alternate. I hate being in limbo and there's no way of predicting my chances - could be 1/5 or 1/500 that I'm bumped up! I wish this fate on no one! Also, does anyone else feel like if they're ultimately chosen as an alternate that it won't really feel the same?

    :(

Also an alternate for the second time in a row, and I wish it would have been a rejection as well based on my waiting experience last year and the fact that I'm also applying for jobs and postdocs and things right now. I think for me, if I do get converted, I won't feel badly about it because the factors that go into the difference between Principal and Alternate are beyond your control. It doesn't mean that the Principals projects are objectively better or whatever. It means that they wanted more people working on X and you're working on Y or something like that. If you do get converted, be proud of yourself!

  6. Just got my Italy notification as well. Also an alternate. Again. For the second year in a row. Seriously, Italy, are you just stringing me along here? Ugh.

Anyway, congratulations to everyone who got good news today and hoping everyone gets answers soon!

You'll love this: my mom found the doc on googlespreadsheet and has been coloring the Hungary row  so she can keep track "for" me. She didn't realize everyone else could see it too. I love my mom :)

That's adorable! Hi to your mom ;)

If you look at previous Iceland years, they notified in April. It seems last year was very early, so who knows if there is actually a delay or if Iceland's release last year was just abnormal.

Japan's was also early (March 4) and earlier than in previous years. Either way, I hope that notifications start coming soon.

Sorry, yeah that was unclear. I got into Fordham's MA and NYU's MA. I'm trying to figure out fit now. I mean, they both have a good focus on what I need, which is why I applied. But I'm trying to sort through and compare their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Follow the money. If Fordham is giving you a lot more, go there, but if you'd go deeply in debt even at Fordham, I'd recommend declining and reapplying with a focus on more fully funded MA programs. Search these forums on NYU's MA program and you'll find that it, like UChicago's MAPH, has a very mixed reputation. Cash cow programs can work for some people, but especially if you're not independently wealthy or something, the debt for a humanities degree is not a good idea.

This.  When it's as close a call as it is for you, you pick the school 40 rank higher.  If school A was a lousy fit and an unhealthy atmosphere, that would be one thing (because toxic leads to added stress, added stress leads to not finishing, and if you don't finish then placement history means nothing).  But from the sounds of it, you just seem to have a bit of a wistful urge to go to the second school. If it really is as close as you say, go with the first, higher ranked school.  You'll thank yourself five years from now.

And @lyonessrampant, how crazy is it that we are job marketing this year?  Wasn't our app season just a few weeks ago?!

It's crazy! I hope your job marketing is going better than mine ;) PM me if you ever want to talk about it.

And thanks Wyatt's Terps! At least I've got "tenure" somewhere. Haha!

  11. Last year, I got an email about my alternate status for Italy research award March 11th. All Italy people were notified that day. If things go similarly this year, I'd expect people to start hearing back in the next couple weeks, but if all notifications are delayed until April, that would be very . . . unfortunate.

This is kind of a selfish question. I received a Gates Cambridge scholarship (!!!) which is a full scholarship and my feeling is that I should withdraw from the Fulbright competition this year, but part of me wants to keep trying to see if I would get the Fulbright scholarship and then decline it if I was lucky enough to get it. This is selfish but my only reason would be to put it as a honorary award (in name only; no funding) in my CV. I have a strong feeling I should withdrawal now as it seems to be the right thing to do, but maybe not, and so I thought I asked you all.

Congratulations! I don't think there's anything wrong with waiting to see what you hear. I was an Alternate for a research grant to Italy last year, and I can tell you that I would have loved for one of the people who got the grant to turn it down for a better/different opportunity! Also, if you receive it and do decline it, you definitely want to put that on your CV. If you stay in academia, having an international fellowship like the Fulbright is really important for the job market (I'm on that now).
