  1. Is UCLA better than USC for BME? I personally thought USC was better. And has anyone heard from U Texas yet? I havent heard anything from them. ALso I havent heard anything from U Rochester after the interview. Although maybe its because I didn't even send an email expressing my gratitude. I do hope that i get into U Texas. Otherwise I am taking that Provost fellowship at USC.
  2. I did my Bachelor in Engineering from India. And now I am doing a one year MSc from University College London. The problem I am facing is that if I send LORs from the professors in my current uni then these professors will write that they have known me only for one month and hence the overall quality of the LOR would be low even if they write good things about me. However the good thing would be that these professors have tonnes of publications and are working in a world top 20 university. If I give LORs from my undergrad proffs then they can comment more about me. However, they are teaching at a no name university and dont have a publication record (maybe 1 publications in their whole life). Moreover, then I'll have to be after them over the phone making international calls. Ok, so this was the comparison between the professors. And let me clarify the proffs in my undergrad who are willing to give me LORs are : 1 is an associate professor and 2 are assistant proffs (he was my project supervisor in undergrad) (believe it or not, my undergrad department didnt have any full proffs..unfortunately!!) . and the ones at UCl are: 1 full proff and one research fellow. Now that is another problem. How good are LORs from research fellows. Please keep in mind that unilke the post doc fellows in USA, research fellows in the UK are employed by the departments for long periods of times and have excellent publication records. So whom should I pick? The best combinations are either of the following two: associate proff from undergrad (my undergrad supervisor), full proff from UCL and research fellow from UCL (with great publication record and I have made quite an impression on him during his lectures) associate proff from undergrad (my undergrad supervisor), full proff from UCL and assistant proff from undergrad Please help me people. It is a very tough decision.
  3. i guess.. I am getting some replies from the recent emails I sent. Is it a good idea to resend emails I sent two weeks back? Or should I wait some more. I still have to cover around 15 more univs (sent to 8 until now).
  4. YAY! Finally got some responses from U Maryland, ASU and UC Davis

  5. No professor is replying to my emails..Is this time busy for the proffs?
  6. sending mails to POIs, but no response yet...

  7. I have a BEng in Biotechnology (similar to a BIochemical engineering) with a GPA of 3.9 from an India (graduate in top 10% of my class). Now I am beginning a 1 yr MSc in Medical Imaging at University College London (Sept 2011 to Sept 2012). I have a good GRE score (Q=800, V=800, A=4.0) although I know anything above 1450 is considered almost equal. I have almost 1 yr research ex in undergrad with no publication. Also I worked for 2 months in a national lab on Southern Hybridization. And I'll get another 6 month of research ex at UCL where my project will begin in March 2012 and hence, it wont be of much use if I apply in Nov 2011. I know the competition for International candidates is fierce. So, I cannot dare apply in univs like UCSD or Yale or even in WashU or Rice. I am thinking of applying to UC Davis, Arizona State University, USC, U Minnesota. I am interested in working in a Medical imaging lab however my undergrad courses make me a stronger candidate for Cellular and molecular imaging as I had courses in Mol BIo, Cell Bio, Biochem, Bioanalytical Techniques, Concepts in Biotechnology etc. UC Davis seems to a good option as they have labs in only three areas : Biomedical imaging, cellular and molecular systems and bioinformatics and I had one semester each of modelling and simulation of biomolecular processes and bioinfo in udergrad and my MSc will be focused on med imaging. What other universities should I apply to? Am I right in thinking that I'll have a better chance if I apply to courses which have more labs in medical imaging than in other sub-fields of bioengineering. Which other universities focus on medical imaging (and are not top ranking universities)? I have shortlisted around 30 univs and now I'll be sending mails to the PIs there. Hope to get a response from somewhere.

  9. Which GRE subject test is most suitable for admission to PhD in Bioengineering? Is it the Maths test or Biology test? Waiting for a reply. Planning to take the exam in October/November.
  10. Hey..So which Univ did you finally chose?

  11. And I was interviewed by Duke, vandy, and UMich,..and I was on a waitlist for Vandy.
  12. Hey..I need some information from Boston University. Will it be possible for you to meet someone there for me?? Please reply soon. I have to accept an MSc offer based on the information.

  13. Hi, I applied for PhD in several US univs this year, but couldn't make the final cut. Now I have been offered a one year Masters in Research in Biomedical Engineering at University of Strathclyde with a 2000 GBP scholarship. The strange thing is that there is no similarity in University rankings in different ranking tables for UK. And its hard to say which university is good and which is not. As for the course, an MRes in biomedical engineering is available only at Strathclyde. And it suits my need because I was told by US univs, that my application lacked research experience. My undergrad academics are pretty good (according to international students..probably a 3.8 GPA, and 1600 GRE). The other option I have is an MSc in Bioengineering at University of Surrey, which has much less research exposure, but Surrey is considered a better university. I plan to apply for a PhD again next year. And I am not sure which course I should pick. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
