  1. UBC said that Sept was unlikely but are formally offering me january entry. I need to find a job asap from sept-dec, or find some source of extra funding. Its either that or learn how to survive without eating as id have enough for fees and rent!
  2. As before, upon being european capital of culture a lot of effort has gone into reviving the city. I've visited it twice and liked it. It's quite small, but on the weekends expect influxes of people from all over due mostly to football matches for Liverpools FC and Everton. However you can easily access Manchester, London, Edinbirgh, Dublin and a few other places at a relatively low price from liverpool via plane, boat and train. As I said its smaller than other cities, namely, London, Birmingham and Manchester but as with all UK cities its people are quite unique and I found them to be quite friendly. . Ive heard good things about the uni too and it seems to be garnering a better rep as time goes by as many UK city unis are. Of course ive only spent short times there and never lived but maybe that can be of some help
  3. I've been accepted to January 2012 intake of the MMLis at UBC and short listed for September. This was a bit of a relief as coming from europe Ill need a bit more money than I'd have by September. However I have been told that all grad students are automatically put forward for consideration for the various Schholarships and grants at UBC. I want to know has anyone ever been awarded one, or when they inform succesful applicatns? I'll possibly be a mere $5000 short of what Id need to get me through the year (Have rent and fees covered but its the extra things) so one of these awards would have me over without hesitation. Otherwise it's Europe in a course I don't really like, in a Uni I've graduated from before with an MA and didn't much like (except for one Dept where Im considering a PhD after the MLIS). I've had no problem finding info on funding for Irish students in the US but lnot so much for Canada, I wouldve applied to some there but the costs are astronomical without some of the really good awards.
  4. I did figure that experience and my references would be most important (both of which are good) so wasn't too concerned. I barely thought of it after all. It may not matter any way as ive got more unforeseen costs are arising in the meantime that is making it a little more difficult.
  5. I got accepted for January 2012 for the MLIS programme, shortlisted for September. From what I can see there are a few scholarships that all post-grads who are accepted are automatically considered for. I don't think they're awarded til nearer term time though, though I could be wrong. I need some sort fo funding to go as I'd be coming from Ireland. I'll have 75% of what I need for the year maybe more, but unless I can find something in the next 6-8 weeks im staying at home. If I find out more Ill report back here as I'm in regular contact with the graduate school
  6. Having not seen much talk of anyone applying for PhDs i assumed that not nearly as many people who do post-gard LIS studies go onto a PhD. In the Uni in Ireland theyve just had their first PhD student in a few years graduate. A lot of people(not all) who do an MLIS or similar are in employment in related fields and seem to go back. Also many people who do an MLIS seem to have a varied academic hostory and like me are hoping the MLIS opens up PhD paths in other areas. I think my history, american studies, media background and an MLIS will go quite well together for something in international relations. Or i hope at least
  7. Organizing would be the US spelling of the word. Most UK English words that end end in ..zing in US English are ..sing in UK English which is probably what's is used in Australia and NZ.
  8. I'll have an extra four months to get the extra money together. My fees for ubs would be half they are in Ireland as international students get a grant of some sort for MAs with heavy amounts of research. The debt load wouldn't be massivem maybe 3-5 thousand if i absolutely needed a loan, and I know things can spiral, but the oppertunities for work or even work experience are extremely limited in Ireland from what I can gather. I've some time to consider it and Ireland is expensive too,
  9. i put in my application for ubc that i had a place elsewhere if i wanted it. I was offered a place for january 2012
  10. I've been offered a place in UBC's MLIS programme for January 2012. I also have a place in UCD in Ireland pretty much starting in september. The only thing stopping me going for sure to UBC is cost. I will be able to save about 70-75% of what I'd need to cover fees, rent and week to week expenses by the end of August for living in Vancouver. However my contract ends then and if I can't get work from Sept-Dec I wouldn't be able to take the leap and I'd be stuck in a no-man's land of sort. They both have their plus points (UBC more I'd say) but I've already been stuck in a situation where I've let oppertunities slide and been stuck with none. The advantage I have is that I have until May pretty much to make up my mind and find extra work. Anyone in similar situations though?
  11. Congratulations. I've started applying for second jobs and jobs for when my current contract is finished. to try and be able to accept UBCs offer.
  12. as the acceptances place was been taken over by us applying to UBC I figured it best to bump this one up. I'm leaning towards going for it and accepting the january place. there are several reasons. It would give me an extra four months to get money together in which I think i could get maybe the 2000 or 3000 that id need to survive, maybe even more. It would give me more time to prepare for the course and considering I'm making some connection through this site and another I could probably access reading lists etc early and acquaint myself with the texts! I'd be able to spend more time with the family and friends too, and as an international student there was the prospect of having a christmas in BC on my own (though i know a few over there), the stress of flying home at christmas (and given the weather here this year that might be impossible). Goiing in january would avoid all this. The flip side is, that should something happen and I didnt get the money together I'd be left in a bad situation, though I'd still have a good bit of money. I'd also be spending the next 8 months indoors, avoiding fun and entertainment like the plague!
  13. Yes it has become very ubc-slais centric for that I apologize. Congrat to anyone accepted to any of the programmes in Canada and US. I steered clear of the US soully because of cost (though I hope to work there) and went with UBC as its remarkbly cheap for international students (4200 CA dollars), it has most of the courses im interested in and I've always wanted to live in or near vancouver. a separate thread will follow now i think
  14. Fair play, seems all things have come good. I still believe it's wrong that those who dont get in seem to be notified later from what i can gather. Now I've a big decision. I was just about to finalise my decision for the place here in Irelan, now I've to do some serious thinking and accounting. If I were to find out well in advance that I could get some funding of some sort I'd obviously jump at the chance. I'd be going on my current projection have 15000 dollars in all for fees, rents etc which is a few thousand off what I'd need i guess even with a modest fee of 4200.
  15. My ire may have been premature, I just got an e-mail offering early admission to the january 2012 programme and being put on the waiting list. If i could find work for sept-december i would take it as itd give me the ti,e to save as much as id need plus id be arouund for christmas. they said something to the effect that theyve had a record number of applicants * that's the waiting list for September which is apparently short.
  16. Someone else on another site has been accepted. 8.15AM PDT (so 4:15 in my local time). It's probably not worth my while to stay up til 1am to find out, one because im sick today and im fairly sure ill get nothing. I'm still a little disgusted that rejections have to wait longer to be formalised. Maybe it has to do with people rejecting them and them later offering people a place, but still. My likely lack of funding makes it a distant chance of me going anyway but I've a few reasons to think why I'd not be accepted, though I've more to believe i should be. Congrats to any succesful applicant this far, maybe we could form a trans-atlantic Link between various US/Canadien Universites and my own (UCD most likely) for LIS students to throw around ideas and exchange info etc.
  17. That's still more than I've got myself. the ominous writing on their site is as follows "Notification of AcceptanceAll recommendations for acceptance are subject to Faculty of Graduate Studies approval. Applicants who are reccommended accepted to SLAIS will be notified by email within six weeks of the application deadline. Applicants who are not accepted will receive official notification from the School by mail. In a very limited number of cases, applicants may be selected for a short waitlist or recommended to a later admission date within the same academic year." That suggests that unsuccesful applicants have to wait it out longer to be officially informed. I don't see why it's not just e-mail that's used. Maybe I'm jumping the gun but I'm expecting a reply today and it being in the negative.
  18. he, i still havnt heard. ive got in touch with them today. i have back up but i need to know asap so i can apply to the back up in time

  19. I have just this moment sent both the SLAIS and Faculty of Graduate Studies e-mails asking if there was a definitive date. I suggested I had tentative offers with deadlines looming in the hope it would garner a swift response. I was quite impressed with the application process, compared to other schools at least it was quite hassle free so I just expected them to be almost on the nose with their dates for offers. It'll probably be by the end of this week before we know. I'd like to know by Thursday as that St. PAtrick;s day and being Irish and having Friday off work I can celebrate or drown my sorrows, the latter of which will be more expenseive as I wont need the money so much

    Toronto, ON

Only visited Toronto, (2000 & 03) and loved it. If you shop around things neednt be the most expensive I found in terms of food and other essentials. Great record stores too. I have fond memories of having a long conversation with someone over there about a favourite band of mine from the UK. I was surprised that he'd heard of them for one, but he knew pretty much everything. It was just one example of the genuine friendliness of the people I met there.
  21. Anyone heard anything from here yet? I was hoping to hear last week or early this week. If there's no funding I'm staying in ye olde Ireland for the year to do something here unfortunately
  22. Yeh I didnt even bother applying for mcgill as the tuition was so high. Took time off after the MA and quit my job (I loathed it) and started applying for jobs I would have enjoyed but didn't tie me down for more than 1 or 2 years. Didn't get those but fortunate to get the one I have now. If it means staying in Ireland ill be having to become an English teacher I feel to get out after.
  23. Im already at home and working, My job is in quite a high profile institute/library in Ireland and there was a lot of competition for the contract (it's a one year thing). I'm somewhat obliged to do an MLIS from september. I'm considering the UK too. Id guess we are just a few of many in similar situations. Ive had 3 years off college, Had I gone about things a different way (doing a different dissertation for one as rocky mountain exploration in the 1830s got a little tough as I wasn;t in the States to get the sources i really needed), I'd probably be finishing up a PhD now. I might just get the qualification here and make my way over to Vancouver or the States (My Masters is American History) and try my luck thereafter
