  1. Hi everyone, I just found out today that I wil be applying a third time. I think embarrassed is the right word... funny part about it is I did a little better my first year: 1st year: 5 schools - wait listed to top-choice, didnt get in and admitted to unfunded masters (didn't take it...) 2nd year: 8 schools - interview at one and rejected from all. I'm feeling really down, I just dont know what I did wrong. I have no idea how to navigate it from here but I dont want to do anything else besides research in cultural anthropology... I work as a research assistant at the anthro dept at the Smithsonian full-time and I have good research background... I just wish someone would give me real feedback, not the "I remember your application last year and it was good" but something like your SOP is so off or your GRE score isn't high enough.... I guess it's lottery odds... Best wishes to everyone our diligence has to pay off!
  2. Hey -- is the GWU Cultural PhD admit here? I had an interview over three weeks ago and they said it would take only two to notify those who got in. I finally broke down and called the department coordinator earlier this week, but he didn't know when we would find out our status. Any information is most welcome! Thanks so much!
  3. Hey Jfromnillicus - We should be friends! Sounds like your experiences are amazing! I was thinking that if I didn't get into PhD programs this time around (I'm still waiting on that one school...) maybe I would go to Italy and get a masters. My BA is in Italian and I've lived with a host family for 2 years but I'm a bit hesitant mainly because I haven't spoken in 4 years (tutors here and there but nothing stable)! I guess I'll try and see what happens, can I ask where you got your MA? Any thoughts for an American thinking about doing a master's abroad? I hope that you get into UT Austin! My fingers are crossed for you! And even if it doesn't work out this round I know that next round you will definitely have something to celebrate:) We Europeanists have got to stick together!
  4. Hey jfromnillicus -- I'm sorry to hear about things this time around but please don't let it get you down. This is my second year applying, I'm a hopeful Europeanist with an emphasis on Italian immigration. Last year I struck out and this year I'm waiting on 1 school out of 8! You'll find a program that fits. I really think it's a waiting game and finding the right program. Best of luck to you and don't be discouraged, given the odds of applying I'm sure most of us have been there!
  5. thanks so much snowblossom the time can;t come soon enough! Congrats on receiving your award!
  6. Thanks so much guttata! You have definitely put my mind at ease. Still not accepted anywhere but I'm praying something will come thru fairly soon. I definitely agree with you about going to a program that doesn't want me. I was waitlisted last year at said top choice and encouraged to reapply. One visit later I reapplied and turns out my POI neglected to tell me he was retiring. I don't think I want to go there anyway. I REALLY appreciate your answer. Best wishes and best of luck!
  7. Hey everyone apologies if this has already been discussed. I applied to the GFRP simultaneously as a grad school applicant. I just found out I didn't get into the school I wrote about in my essays. I got the impression that if by some miracle I do get the fellowship I could transfer the fellowship to another program. I did some searches this morning and found that you have to decline the fellowship if you aren't admitted into the program you applied for, is this true? I'm losing my mind... Thanks for any feedback!
  8. hey lookinside, could you tell us when you were notified by Harvard? Thanks so much! Also, thanks m41 for the info -- 2% odds what a game we are playing!
  9. I was wondering the same thing! I haven't heard a word, I'm hoping we hear something today. Best of luck!
  10. Hi Everyone -- I was wondering if anyone has accepted Harvard's offer? A HUGE congrats for those of you who got in and accepted; I was just wondering because I'm waitlisted (and didn't get in anywhere else). They said odds were very slim that I would actually be accepted. This is worse than waiting for a rejection at least there is no glimmer of hope from a rejection! Just wondering if someone out there turned their offer down. Ugh, I sound just as crazy as I feel. Best of luck to everyone else, and if you didn't get in anywhere, no worries there is always next year! (which is my POA!)
  11. Thanks for this, a colleague and I both applied for UChicago anth and neither of us have heard either... Thanks for the post! I was thinking about emailing too but I'll just hold tight.
