I think each university is different, so I can only speak for myself... my university reduces the amount of internal funding you get if you are awarded OGS or SSHRC. I'm not sure about UofT, but I can imagine that they'll probably do something similar.

Same here! Now there's more waiting... lol.

I'm quite close to finishing my PhD (if all goes according to plan) and will be 35 when it's done. There are two things about being a grad student in this age range that I've found to be difficult: First, going from a full-time job, "back" to living on a student budget. I'm not gonna lie. It sucks giant monkey balls. And second, going from working in a professional position of some authority, to being treated like a child again (not necessarily from my university - though it happens there too - but just in general by the bank, government, landlord, etc...). I can totally relate to what others have said. It's exhausting sometimes, having to remind people that I'm an adult - not some 22 year old kid straight out of undergrad (please, no offense to anyone reading this thread who might fit that description! I'm just being honest about how it feels).

Who's Applying for Fall 2012? Where are you Applying?

I wonder if this was the issue? Not that you're against the grain, but that you stated it unequivocally without room for critical questioning through research. As someone who has sat on their uni's admissions committee as the PhD rep, I can tell you that an unbending point of view doesn't always sit well with an admissions committee, and it can sometimes come across as arrogant. You might have been better off taking an inquisitive stance, rather than a predetermined one. If you already "know" the answer to the school privatization debate, why bother researching it? -
Hi superfamous, The longer I've been in university, the less patience I have for this kind of crap. My response? Wait until his "deadline" is over, then send him an e-mail along the lines of, "I'm really sorry Professor X, but I'm just reading your e-mail now. When you e-mailed last night, I was already asleep. I'm happy to help with your workload in the future if you're able to give me more time to respond." Leave it there. Be polite, but get your point across. Although there is a certain amount of crap we put up with in order to keep ourselves employed (it happens in every work environment), professors don't have the right to abuse students simply because we "work" for them. There was a time when I would have just given in and done what they were asking, but we're not slaves. We're adults, with real lives and other obligations. Sometimes it takes a student drawing a professional line in the sand before a professor "gets" it.

Contacting Potential Advisors Before Applying
Andsowego replied to news2yous's topic in Applications
It's highly recommended that you DO contact potential advisors ahead of time. I've never heard anything contrary to this. In fact, it's my understanding that most universities actively encourage applicants to do this. My university even asked me to name potential supervisors on my research plan of study that I had been in contact with, and had agreed to work with me. Without that prior connection, I doubt my application would have been given a second look. Keep in mind, that contacting someone out of the blue is a lot harder for you than it will be for them. Professors are used to receiving phone calls and e-mails from potential students. My current supervisor once told me that she receives anywhere from 10-25 calls or e-mails per week from potential students during the months immediately leading up to application deadlines. The bottom line to consider, is what's the worst that can happen? They don't respond! eta: I also thought I should add, that as a strategy for narrowing down potential advisors, you should find out if the department you're applying to lists their current PhD students somewhere on their website. There are likely other students already working in your area of interest, and you may be able to see who each student is being supervised by (my department does this, and it was very helpful for me when I was applying). -
I presented at AERA last year (New Orleans!) and it was a good experience. I'm not going this year due to a scheduling conflict (which sucks, because I LOVE Vancouver - it's an awesome city). The only thing about the AERA conference that bothers me is the size. The printed program is literally 450+ pages long (and I think there were over 20,000 people in attendance last year). What I would suggest as a strategy, is make sure that you go through the program online before you get to the conference, and map out a plan for what you want to attend and who you want to meet. The online searchable program feature is great - you can search by keyword, author name, etc, and create your own schedule. eta: Does anyone know where the 2013 AERA conference will be held? I don't see that info on their website yet.

I'm a PhD student with a minor. It was optional in my program, and I thought, "why the heck not?" I did have to take an extra PhD-level seminar course, but overall it didn't add a ton of work to my program. I'm hoping it will make me more marketable when I start searching for jobs in the long term. In the particular field I'm in, it will enhance my chances in the current hiring landscape.

Is this only if you applied directly to SSHRC? I've applied a few times (waitlist... waitlist...) though my uni, and after the initial confirmation in January, have never heard anything from SSHRC until April/May. Until I started checking out GradCafe, I'd never heard about this A/B list.

Really sorry to hear that, cordyceps. I know it's probably not much comfort, but I've been there, and I know how much it sucks. Hang in there!
