  1. Not Skowhegan related but if anyone is waitlisted at VSC I am declining my spot because I gotta save all the monies for school in the fall.
  2. Just be as confident as possible; as long as your work is up to par, a BA can only work in your favor because it increases diversity. Basically echoing what was said above ^
  3. Hey everyone, I can't emphasize how important it is to VISIT VISIT VISIT every school you get into (even before applying, if possible). A brief visit can totally turn your decision upside down and prevent you from locking into a two year scenario of unhappiness.

The Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan is definitely something to consider in making your decision (https://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/understand/plans/income-driven).
  5. Accepted at Mills, waiting on funding; even if they waive tuition, it goes without saying that the cost of living in the bay is freakin ridiculous, so they'd have to offer a generous stipend or I'd have live on my little brother's couch for two years... too bad, bc I love the program! I hope everyone is treating themselves accordingly after this grueling process, regardless of outcome. I ditched work today and am going museum hopping alone! Weee!
  6. Me. I lost a lot of weight and expended lots of emotional energy on the applications process last year. This year has been much different. Make as much work as you can in the next year, try to recognize any areas of improvement in terms of portfolio presentation, and don't be afraid to reach out to to the programs you're interested in about whether you're a good fit or not.
  7. In most situations, transferring (which I wouldn't even refer to as transferring, since there's no official process to do so) graduate programs isn't looked upon too favorably. That being said -- don't settle, and apply to school 2-3 times if necessary until a situation "feels right".
  8. Anyone going stir crazy at their mind numbing job? School is several months away, but I feel like I have adult senioritis or something.
  9. Interviews were a couple of weeks ago and informal acceptances sent out a few days ago
  10. Yeah, I know someone who was waitlisted last week.
  11. Yep! Accepted into the film/video program, visiting during the first week of April. Congrats!
  12. I think Post-Bacs are cool if you have a huge trust fund, but otherwise I'm inclined to agree with you. I have a friend who did the SAIC Post-Bac and ended up forgoing a lot of studio time because they were simultaneously working crazy hours in order to pay for it.
  13. I didn't do either option. I went to the Vermont Studio Center residency, worked my butt off in the studio, revamped my practice, made more of an effort to reach out to other artists. Last year my grad apps didn't work out-- but this year I ended up getting into my first choice school with a full ride, so....my recc to you is to try to do a free/cheap residency, keep making work and talking to your peers, and most importantly, stay posi/confident! Two years later I'm more jaded and wary of the SVA program; for how short it is it's really expensive (no grants available), PLUS the cost of living in NYC even for a short period. There are other residencies that are less expensive than the SVA program and include room and board! If you're looking for the instruction and classroom setting -- look into community college/extension school courses. If you don't have a BFA you will inevitably have to play a little catch up, but remember that your BA will be an asset to your work in the long term.
  14. Also -- if anyone has been accepted to VCU and thinks that they're going, please msg me!!
  15. Anyone attending the UPenn event at the end of the month?
  16. I've totally bombed interviews that somehow ended up with favorable results; and conversely, walked away thinking that I nailed it, and been rejected. The universe works in mysterious ways, don't fret.
  17. Vermont Studio Center, for its calibre of atmosphere, facilties, community and visiting artists. They offer some fully funded fellowhips; however, even if you don't receive one, they're pretty generous about grants/work-study. Even if you end up shelling out a couple of grand, it's worth the experience on many levels (not to mention pennies compared to a semester of grad school). This is a shameless plug, but anyone else on this board who has been there can vouch for it. MacDowell is fully funded and I believe Yaddo is fully or partially, but I haven't been to either.
  18. Just got fully funded + TA + stipend at 1st choice school. I don't mean for that to come off as bragging; but rather, words of encouragement. I've gone through the application process twice with almost 100% rejection across the board and almost held back from applying this year. Stay positive and do residencies!
  19. Same. I think it's likely that we'll receive an official decision on the 13th.
  20. Anyone heard anything from UPenn? I know they're still conducting interviews, but I be all impatient n stuff.
  21. Anyone else nervously waiting on funding info. after being accepted? This feels like round two of anxiety. I'm so happy about my acceptances but at the same time, don't want to get my hopes up if I ultimately can't afford to go...

    Art & Debt

I'm close to 15K deep in debt from undergrad. I've made payments on and off over the years when I've been able to afford it, but ended up at square one because of interest. No more debt for me. Can't have it. Over the years I've watched friends struggle with garnished wages, overdrawn bank accounts, and daily harassment from debt collectors. I don't mean to sound dogmatic. Other artists' decisions are none of my business. I've just made the personal decision that I won't go back to school until I manage to get a full ride (or close to it), even if it takes more than one round of apps, or opting for a solid state school instead of an Ivy.
