purdue is pretty respected from what i've heard....if you got funding...i would go there..
-
Ethan....my point is that most employers recognize school names and are not as familiar with programs/rankings. NYU is very well regarded and getting a masters from NYU would be seen as quite an achievement no matter the program.

2nd.....why would you take out that much debt for just a masters in psych? you can't even do much (well things that actually pay) with psych until you have a PhD in it....ok if you wanted to be a Marriage and Family Therapist you only need a masters, but that only pays around 37k....will you be able to pay off that much debt on that kind of salary?! go where the money is...that's what i'm doing as well....different program but same gist.... -
For someone pursuing an English PhD, that could have been said more tactfully, and also with proper capitalization! Also, what was the purpose of inquiring whether or not s/he was an international student?

nab....that IS ridiculous! did they ever communicate with you, letting you know when you could expect a decision? update on my status: thanks everyone for the responses. it is pretty shocking how unprofessional some schools are. too bad they don't realize how many potential students they are losing due to unresponsive practices. i am no longer going to my unresponsive top choice since i got full funding + stipend at another school. yes, it is much lower ranked, but i truly believe for the public sector...debt is just not worth it. plus if you have no debt....you can always go back for another degree or further education later on.

Does anyone else find it kind of ironic that everyone seems to be expecting around the same starting salary no matter which program they are attending? The question then remains: is taking out debt to go to a high-ranked program worth it....if in the end we are all going to be basically in the same boat anyway?

um ok thanks rude person

thanks for the reply and the wishes sonic...appreciate it...also congrats on your waiver! good luck at u of new hampshire!

I just got a voicemail from one of my schools saying i received an assistantship with a "tuition waiver" plus monthly stipend for two years....does a tuition waiver generally mean the whole tuition is waived or partially waived?

How would I figure out my monthly payments on a $60,000 loan at the standard student loan interest rate? I am clueless about this since I never have had to take out a loan. Thanks a lot....

My top choice has failed to respond to 3 emails of mine sent more than a week ago....all to different email addresses/people at the program. Although I know this is a minor thing, I just keep comparing their behavior to my second choice, which responds within one day. Would an unresponsive/uncommunicative school make you change your mind? Keep in mind my first choice is much better for my interests and a better location....

Both starting and let's say after ten years? I know we have all looked at the salary averages for careers in public service/govt affairs, however I am wondering if you believe you will fall in these numbers. If you could also say the school you are expecting to attend, that would be helpful. This may help some people figure out how much debt they are willing to take on. Thanks.

Their acceptance of admissions deadline is not until June 1. It is semi-rolling because people could apply up to March 15, 2009. All admitted applicants get some nominal award (probably up to 4,000 but I don't know the exact number yet.) This is what was told to me. I will let you know more when I get my packet.

Hi Spackle, I don't think it makes much sense to let ONE negative review deter you. With the 270 students currently in the program...I highly doubt all of them would say the program is negative. A few things to keep in mind: what matters less is the program and the ranking. Employers are not familiar with rankings...they are familar with school names. NYU is ranked 33 out of all universities, including private, in the nation. It is a very well-regarded institution in the whole US if not the world. Honestly, how many people don't know NYU? Secondly, its graduate programs are known to be even harder to get into than undergrad (which only has an acceptance rate of about 25%.) To give you an idea....the law school is ranked fifth in the nation, the stern school of business is number ten in the nation. Next, look at the faculty profiles. Not only are all from top ranked schools, they also have real world practical experience. On top of that, you have the city plus NYU's alumni network at your fingers for jobs and internships. New York really is the capitol of the world right now. I can't imagine a better place to be. According to the admissions packet, they had a 95% job placement rate. Furthermore, the good thing about the program is that you are not tied down to the public or government sector. You can specialize in the private sector if you want to which gives you much greater job flexibility and income potential. I would watch the webinar for further information. I am attending this over many other great programs, so feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.
