He did BTech from IIT. Answering your question. NCSU is good in Networks, AI. Raliegh is a good place to live. UC schools are good for getting a high paying job(in INR). Your other choices, UMich , UPenn are just as good.

I second this. Unless there is a real need, like a rank gap or major preference, there would be no reason to accept an offer and reject it later.

I'm in a similar situation. I got an admit in mid march. I called the graduate admissions office. They told me that a postal mail has been sent. I got email from department. I accepted the program after enquiring the department through email. They also told me that an email is enough till I get the postal mail (Even later than april 15). No letter in my hand at the time of writing. Apparently the postal also has my funding offer. This particular school doesn't accept scanned copy of acceptance(Of course with my precious signature) for the TA offer, but they accept scanned copy of GRE Scores till acceptance. I pity their logical reasoning. The other part is that, they do some background checks for foreign nationals. I don't know if it got over. Planning to call up on April 12-15 to make sure everything is alright with an email acceptance that I've sent. They're also telling me that they require acceptance signed hard-copy after I get the postal mail, even after the april 15 deadline. I'm in a dilemma, whether to accept another offer(which worked out great) which is just as good, just to be sure

Accepting an offer wouldn't be binding. I've heard cases in which people accept two offers, just in case, they had change of plans. In your case, it shouldn't be an issue. But, I strongly advise you to mail, and if they are not replying call the universities you've applied to make sure of your exact status before accepting. Generally, i've heard that universities don't expect cent percent turnout from their acceptances. If you have change of plans, convey the university asap

Developing countries have a lot of women, atleast in numbers who are motivated to take up higher education and also parents who support them. I'm from a developing country and my mom is an engineer, graduated in 1980. She is working and has a lot of women colleagues from her batch. I see a lot of women from my country taking up higher education. We cannot consider excess of population and make such statements, considering it requires a lot of motivation and support from family even for a candidate from developed country.

I can read between the lines. Anyway, I'm excited and lucky to get the advisor and attend the program.

I told my friend about it (UMass) and the acceptance rate was very less. He told me that someone had told him that it was less. (It was me). It was a pinch of salt. Later he tells me how he didn't opt for a phd since it takes a very long time to finish. I know you can do a phd and you're not doing but, why mention it to someone who has been rejected from a dream school

Is there a need to be worried the people I mentioned in my Application didn't contact me. I'm also in same situation as poster. I didn't even know that I had to contact the POIs before I applied.

I was accepted in the systems group mid-march. You can call the department and ask if they are not mailing you back. I'll appreciate any info on how systems group is in rutgers compared to other groups.

I'm a guy and I'm considering choosing a female advisor for a doctoral program. All this seems to be strange for me, and I'm concerned with all this strangeness.

Affluent is a relative term. Respected should replace it

I know that people who graduate from top schools end up in affluent jobs (assistant profs, research directors), while those go beyond some range, have to do post docs to get an academic job or a research job. I also know that most often it depends on contacts that the advisor has and i develop over grad school, that helps me when getting a job. But what I see is that almost almost all programs that I have applied to have doctoral faculty from, so called top schools. If facultyy got a doctoral degree from a good college and ended up in a job there, then they are predictably good enough. I agree to the factor that peers would be a different lot when I go to non top schools. If my advisor is good and i'm good enough, at the end of the day, would it prevent me from doing good in life, probably after a lot of soul-searching and knowing that i'm not the best in the number game. Do small schools get noticed by these rankings? Would you go for a number if there was a better research match or a conducive environment. (home over other-state).

Talked to UVa two days back over phone. The staff told me that the comittee was meeting yesterday, and they might make a few decisions. I'm also waiting on RPI, where my application got delayed due to toefl scores not reaching them by post.

Surely, They should double check such stuff. For some people, it finally boils down to one admit and if its screwed then life is.

Is it time? Should I call up grad schools now?

I'm also from India, I tried calling a few, but they are really irritated when you do so. They are handling applications from all departments and they are not call centers. Its better to be patient. In my case, I'm waiting for an offer details email or letter, after my acceptance. I've mailed them, that it takes weeks for the postal mail to reach this place. I'll call them up, late next week, if there's no email. Regarding phone interviews, Its generally happens through skype, and at managable times like 9:30 pm IST. So, don't worry, if they want to contact you, they will call you or drop you a mail. -

NYU Polytech Biomedical Engineering PHD/MS Fall 2011
csKid replied to mrtasan's topic in Waiting it Out
Graduate schools loose transcripts all the time. I've heard many stories, n that's why I wrote a custom covering letter, name and application number, and program I applied to on each paper I sent them. All went in vain, URoch, dint recieve my transcripts at all for the program i applied. I called them up and made them accept unofficial transcripts RPI didn't recieve my ETS test scores(Apparently they get it through snail mail) and officially lost it. I contacted the prof. who was in touch with me, after contacting the admissions office through mail and phone repeatedly. Completed it with an unofficial copy and screwing ETS over phone. URoch gave all admits by the time I finished with the heck of it , and RPI apparently went on a early admit spree. I'm not hoping much. Tough luck with them, but what I found out was, contacting the department concerend or a prof, will work better than the admissions office because, admissions office will have to handle all the departments, and some small schools, UG and PG admissions. Look for the department contact number. Few places have a seperate department Admissions counseller. NYU poly, is no different from other places. Good luck with you application
