  1. Marty West is awesome and I'm sad we don't have him anymore. However, I think with our strong ed department (which offers a lot of policy-centered courses) you can explore ed policy a lot and prepare yourself for a future in the field.
  2. I'm making the same decision between Harris and Heinz (the DC track) except I have nearly equal funding from each school and want to go into consulting for the public sector. I'm visiting both in the next week, and while I'm not sure what I can contribute to your decision right now, feel free to PM me if you want to commiserate about choosing between Harris and Heinz!
  3. Thanks for doing this! I was recently admitted to the Harris MPP program with funding, and I have a few questions. The program seems 1) very quant-heavy and 2) very structured. 1) How much of a focus is placed on math at Harris? What levels of math are needed to excel in the economics classes? I have an undergrad policy degree but not a lot of calculus/econ and even though the admissions committee seems to think I am prepared for the program, I am concerned. (I know there is math camp in the summer, but even with that I'm a little concerned). I'm deciding between Harris and Heinz and I really focus on implementation and management structures, and I'm concerned that the focus on economics won't serve my interest in communications and leadership strategies. 2) Also, the program seems very structured; do you feel like you have enough space with electives to apply your skills to specific interest-areas? Finally, I am concerned about job placement after graduation, just as previous comments expressed. The Heinz-DC program has the apprenticeship component which will provide job experience and networking in DC. What does Harris have to offer in this area?
  4. Received an acceptance email w no personalized letter attached. Is it really for me? Is there funding? Ahhhhh
  5. I just got my admit letter from CMU this morning...there is still hope!
  6. I just got my acceptance to the MSPPM-DC program and I'm very excited. I have a few question that I would love to ask a current student. 1) While I did receive some merit funding, I am interested in doing some kind of work-study or TA/RA position to make extra cash. Does this happen a lot at Heinz? What kind of opportunities are available? Is working or TA-ing too difficult with the heavy course load? 2) How much choice do you have over your apprenticeship placement? How many hours a week do you work vs. how many hours you are in class? 3) On average, what is class size like? Thanks in advance for you help!
  7. Did you apply to the non-profit program at Milano?? I know it may not be on par with where you have already been accepted, but it seems really aligned with your interest and if you are awesome enough to get into all of these programs, then you might have a decent amount of money coming from them.
  8. I received that IF email and then I was accepted, but it may have went to everyone? I received my BU letter Saturday, but I only live an hour away from Boston. I applied to BU's Com program (Public Relations), specifically because, as mentioned about, I don't have a com background and it seemed to be on par with what I feel I need to learn to transition. However, I'm concerned that it is not going to be challenging enough. Does anyone know how it ranks compared to other com programs? What class sizes are like? They are giving me substantial funding so it's alluring, but I need to know more before making a decision (my MPP programs haven't sent out letters yet).
  9. I believe its an email telling you to check the application page. They said it would be up by tomorrow!
  10. I just got into the Public Relations Master's program at Boston University's COM school. I'm trying to transition from my undergrad degree in policy studies to public relations and marketing, and because my undergrad school doesn't have a communications program, I don't have a lot of advice about what schools are right for me. BU is offering me a very solid merit scholarship package, which I like, but I want to make sure its a well-respected program. I didn't apply to some of the more prestigious programs because of my lack of background in PR. I'm going to the visit days and will talk to profs, but kind of makes me feel as though they are not that competitive if they could give me (a strong applicant, but with a limited background in the subject) such a generous aid package. Also, I'm kind of afraid in terms of class size that it might be overwhelming, as I'm coming from a tiny department at an Ivy and have 6 students in most of my classes. Thoughts?
  11. AHHHHH, I didn't get that email. What does that mean!
  12. I'm a senior graduating undergrad from the Taubman Center at Brown this Spring. If you are interested in IR and Diplomacy, I would be a little concerned about pursuing a degree here. The program is very domestic (that's why I like it) and I'm not sure how much of an opportunity you would have to explore those issues. However, we do have a fair amount of international students for a small program, and I think that Taubman does a good job of helping them out and making sure they are comfortable. Since the program is small, there is a lot of specialized attention. On the downside though, I'm not sure you'd have the internship opportunities that you would have at Georgetown in DC because there's not a lot of IR going on in Providence!
  13. I called them last week because my boyfriend has to make decisions before me (including at CMU) because he is in the stats program and I need to know ASAP. They said they are notifying by email and snail mail on March 15th (this Tuesday). Maybe it will come out sooner, but definitely not later as I'm not sure why they would lie to me. Also, @UrbanWonk, I am a current undergrad at Brown in the Public Policy department, and I'd love to answer any questions you might have. Getting a fifth year Master's here is my back-up plan (I'm halfway through the Master's program already) and I'd love to give you straight answers on what it is like!
