  1. read and obsess -or- savor the peace
  2. Business tote bags are great if you find the right size/style. As a chick, I can get away with using them as big purses so I have one bag for all purposes.
  3. Everyone where I work knew about my grad school plans (I studied for the GREs during lunch breaks). Most folks were supportive. I like my job but I'm definitely getting restless. Not to mention some of my co-workers have gotten a little weird on me now that it's official that I'm leaving. I guess some people think it's a dis that their life's work is my gap year. Has anyone else experienced this?
  4. i feel a facebook group coming on?
  5. Has anyone heard about fellowships yet? Specifically, Knox fellows?
  6. STAR- Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration If you log into myPurdue you can find more info about it. You basically sign up to visit campus to register for classes and get your ID card. At this point, I don't think grad students are required to do it.
  7. Do grad students need to sign up for STAR, or is that just an undergrad thing?
  8. I'm also interested in meeting other grad newbies! I'm going into the communication MA program this fall. It'll be my first time not living on the east coast, so it should be interesting.
  9. t_ruth makes a valid point, which raises the question: How many people actually put in 100% effort into all of their classes all of the time? And not just 100% effort, but 100% efficient, effective effort? I know I didn't in undergrad. (Although I clearly put in enough effort if I'm on this forum...hopefully XP) And if you are naturally exceptional, gifted, etc. that just means that it requires less effort for you to gain full mastery of the material, therefore that A or B is much easier to get. Still, I know plenty of exceptionally gifted people who never put in the effort and flunked out of college or had pretty dismal grades. This is an awesome thread, btw. ---EDIT---- And if we're talking about efficient effort, then I guess we have to define what that is. Spending two hours reading an article and perusing facebook is not the same as two hours of reading an article and using critical analysis to relate that article to the class, real world, etc. I think the standard for "good effort" has gone down over the years which is likely related to grade inflation.
  10. Although I dislike the sense of entitlement expressed by students in the article, I can kind of understand the "A for Effort" argument. Putting in a lot of effort usually (USUALLY) results in quality work and therefore a satisfactory grade. Then again, if you attend every class and office hours session, do all the work, study hard and STILL can't pull off a decent grade, you probably have bigger issues than your GPA.
  11. How is getting around West Lafayette without a car? Where's the closest grocery store to campus?
