  1. Well given the job market recently I am not sure you can be that picky regardless. I know plenty of people that graduated in the top 5 with amazing accolades from their departments and still had to take job offers where they could get them. It seems at this point prestige can help you get a tenure track job offer from an R1, but not much more than that. The job market is tough!
  2. Just found out I wasn't accepted for the NSF internship at ICPSR at The University of Michigan. Didn't even get an interview. It hurts, but I figure I have to get used to the rejection if I am going to make it through this process.
  3. with my professors I am comfortable with I use their first name. Any new professors or those I am just getting to know I say Prof. X Obviously if professors continue to sign emails with Prof or Dr. I will address them accordingly. But if you have been in regular contact with them and they use their first name then it's fine to do the same I think.

There really isn't anything you can't get here. We have all the big box stores (except Ikea). Come as early as possible so you can enjoy your new surroundings! One can certainly slack on their academics and enjoy themselves plenty. But if you're anything like me, your memory of wonderful beach days and cliff diving will become hazy quickly as you spend countless hours in Sinclair studying! The roaches are unavoidable here unless your wealthy enough to pay a company to come spray on a regular basis. Roach motels help, but I can guarantee that you will have them at least in your kitchen. It is a way of life. Glad to hear you're bringing your car, the best parts of the island IMO are east side (Kailua) and the North Shore. I did the exact same thing as you. I flew out a month ahead of time of my partner and she met me out here. I was lucky enough to have friends who let me sleep on their couch while I looked for an apartment. Any other questions feel free to ask, oh and PM if you wanna be friends on facebook (and can handle my radical politics) haha.
  5. I am applying for Fall 2013. What I am saying is that there is no way to answer my question using the current online application because as of now the only option for sociology is the MA program, which means the 2nd option of an MA in Sociology isn't showing on the application.

Who is your POI at UH? My thesis advisers husband is a professor in the linguistics department!

Alright, someone I can really help! My first suggestion for neighborhood would be Makiki. It is pretty close to UH, takes me less than 15 mins by bus or about a 25 min walk. Will you have a car here? I need some more information! If you have any specific questions please ask! As far prices go, you can get a 1 bedroom in Makiki for $900-1800 depending on how nice it is. Be prepared, apartments in Honolulu take getting used to. You will, I repeat you will have cockroaches to deal with. Also landlords tend turn apartments around fast. When I lived in SoCal and Oregon it was generally accepted that you'd move in at the first or maybe the fifteenth of the month. Here apartments will literally turn around in days, and don't expect landlords to do a whole lot of maintenance in between.
  8. Looks like I may have my answer, but it is still not clear. Because the deadline for PhD apps has passed, it will only let you select the MA at this time. Hopefully the department will get back to me.
  9. Awesome thanks. No idea whether or not applicants are automatically considered for the MA program? I emailed the department but have yet to hear back.
  10. 2 major sub-fields, mine are social movements and environmental sociology. But then you need to explain in detail what aspect of those subfields you want to study. My example again is new-left social movements, network theory, strategies and tactics, agro-food systems, neo-liberal development etc.
  11. I am still waiting to hear back as to whether or not they automatically consider for the MA program. Anyone know?
  12. @abc Have you checked out google street view to see how hilly the area around the University is? That would be my suggestion!
  13. Well my partner and I are trying to get into programs (she is applying to Poli Sci) in the same city, so if that actually happens, that will be the deciding factor for us.
  14. I love the idea of going to UVic for grad school. Even though it's no where near the highest ranked program I am applying for, the department seems right on with my interests and Victoria in general seems amazing.
  15. Oh whoops, I actually meant to write Barnard. Must of have a total mind lapse. Fixed thanks.
  16. So looking through the faculty on the Columbia Sociology Website I noticed that some of the most interesting faculty for me (research interest wise), were listed as "Barnard" faculty. Does anyone know if the Barnard College faculty take grad students? Here is the link http://sociology.col...artment-faculty
  17. First, take a deep breath. Second, congrats on your acceptance. The email was directly from the department and it seems official letters need to come from the graduate school.
  18. I gotta tell ya, It doesn't sound like the grind of a potential 7 year PhD program is right for you.
  19. I'm not waiting for grad school but for two NSF Internships I applied for. Notifications should be coming any day now and I can't stop checking my email constantly.
  20. This. Do it.
  21. Yes I would count it on a CV as original research, but don't send it as a writing sample if it won't stand up to scrutiny.
  22. Doesn't matter if the paper sucked. A thesis is almost always original research. Look the fact is this, most of us that end up ABD or full fledged professors will look back on the research we did in our undergrad years and laugh. The point as I understand it, is being able to conceptualize and execute a research project.
  23. I am relatively "googleable," but I have been working on cleaning up my internet presence for some time now. I also have a personal website that explains my academic experience and an academia.edu account, both are the first thing that pop up when you google my name.
  24. Thanks for the advice everyone, framing my activism in the context of my research was the plan, but it's nice to hear confirmation this is an ok thing to do. I actually hope it will give me a leg up of sorts, I have found taking numerous classes from Soc to Women's Studies that my activism has given me a wealth of knowledge that other undergrads simply don't have, and also allowed me to focus on developing new insights and ideas instead of focusing on content that I largely already know.
  25. "Original research" can be conducted in the context of a paper for class, but it really depends. I think as explained original research involves adding at least in some small way to the existing body of work by exploring new research questions or expanding on existing research in some way. Simply writing a 15 page paper analyzing a social problem, or issue based on existing literature would not be considered "original research." That said, one can analyze existing data sets (think GSS or ICPSR) to answer new questions or develop a statistical inference about the data. One concern I have is being pigeonholed as a qualitative researcher. While most of my "research experience" as an RA has been qualitative (interviews, focus groups), I have made it a point to learn stats and use stats in a couple of my papers doing bi-variate data analysis, regression, correlation and learning to use SPSS. I am hoping to develop even more quantitative skills this summer if I get one of the NSF internships I applied for.
