  1. I plan on submitting an article developed from my honor's thesis for publication in a professional journal. Is that a mistake? My faculty advisors seem to think it is a great idea, but should I be looking for an undergrad journal or something else with a lower bar to submit to? The topic is in social movements.
  2. That's what I am hoping for! I plan to develop a journal article from my thesis to submit for publication, but it probably will still be pending when I send my applications in.
  3. On that note. Got my first book review done for the Anthropology Review Database. I am pretty excited as I am just a lowly undergraduate haha
  4. I think a good range is 12-17K public, and 17-32K private (very rare on the high end). However some schools offer more or less depending on whether or not TA/RA salary is included in stipend or not. Some schools are easily 30k plus for years with a TA/RA salary on top of a stipend.
  5. Yes it would be crazy if the decision was based on your few month old relationship. If you really, truly like program x more, and it is still decently ranked top 30, 40, 50? then it is worth considering in my opinion. Keep in mind this is 5-8 years of your life, if you will be the most happy in program x maybe you should consider it. I gotta ask, why is everyone so secretive here? Who cares if someone sees what programs you applied for and where you got in? As long as you aren't trashing another school, or using your real name as your screen name it's not going to have any impact on your applications or your offers, seriously. We are applying to Sociology programs, not the CIA.
  6. Well I didn't post the first wiki link, Epicure did. I posted more links for him in response to his post. None of it is really all that controversial though. I have at least a couple anthro textbooks that can corroborate the information. However this is not a journal article or research paper I didn't feel like typing long quotes from textbooks our journal articles, you understand I'm sure. While I spend more time then I should here, I have real work to attend to!
  7. Haha this made me crack up. I have 3 schools in the top 10 on my list to apply to next year, after this thread I am glad Harvard isn't on the list.
  8. Really? How about the statement "what is wrong with class divisions?" is that fine as well?
  9. You can always split your apps between PhD and MA programs. That's what I'm doing!
  10. I think all acceptances should delivered by owl's, just like Hogwarts
  11. Don't be so critical of something you don't really understand and/or hadn't even heard of until yesterday. Yes so they were political radicals and participated in some action that may be considered a bit extreme. Lets also remember that this was a volatile time of worker strikes and radical uprisings. Not to mention I find people who criticize such things tend to be supportive of the revolutions in Egypt or the riots in Greece. Don't fall into the Chris Hedges trap. It is also worth mentioning that The Modern School Movement was the main influence for what is now the Montessori School Model. As far as anthropological data goes, you expect ethnography's of cultures that no longer exist? It's not possible. What I can tell you is that anthropology is settled on the fact that these cultures did exist and were considerably more egalitarian than west ever has been, that's for sure. The idea of "egalitarian dominance" is ludicrous on it's face frankly. That link you provided adds nothing to do this discussion and is frankly kind of embarrassing.
  12. Education does not have to recreate stratification either. Case in point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_School_(United_States)
  13. yup. A lot of hunter-gatherer societies were quite egalitarian. Certainly not all, but it is very much possible for humans to exist without hierarchy. Never mind numerous anarchist communities that have existed throughout time. One could also argue that non-hierarchical hunter-gatherer societies were the earliest anarchist communities.
  14. I really don't agree with this blanket statement. While most if not all modern cultures stratify, not all cultures throughout history have.
  15. Haha, I needed that. Today is not a good day.
  16. I am wondering about this sort of thing too. I have been organizing with Occupy and even got arrested haha. But more importantly I have years of experience (10+) as an activist working on environmental and animal issues. That has played a significant role in my interest towards environmental sociology and social movements. I am not sure if mentioning this will hurt or help my application.
  17. I think I have learned things from this site that will help my application next year. For all the benefits of this site (and I think there are plenty), there may be more negatives. It's hard to say.
  18. HA. They didn't want to tell you that they got rejected. Reminds me of the part in Office Space where they say they "fix the glitch" and let things "work themselves out." haha. You just had to deduce that if you hadn't been offered an acceptance it means you were rejected.
  19. Ryan Harvey, Evan Greer, The Clash, Heaven Shall Burn, old Against Me! and Saves the Day
  20. If you don't care about rank, UH Manoa is very critically focused. Prof. Shapiro and Prof. Ferguson among many others would be a good choice!
  21. Damn someone got 27,300/year, full tuition and health care, in New Haven!!! Going to live large while in grad school I guess haha.
  22. Yeah, I live in Hawaii. Outside of the west coast (where I am only applying to 3 schools) traveling on my own coin would be prohibitively expensive. And yes I know, I live in Hawaii, boohoo for me LOL.
