  1. Yup, that's definitely something I'm going to look into the first semester I'm there.. Hopefully, there'll be one that's quite close by.. I'm guessing volunteering doesn't have any visa restraints, yeah?
  2. This post just made my day!! .. Folks at home have had a dog at home for the past 16 years.. We had a pomerian for 14 years and 6 months after she passed away, we got a labrador, who makes Marley (from Marley and me) seem really well mannered.. Have always loved dogs, took care of an abandoned puppy with my girlfriend for a few days too.. I'm an international applicant, so I'm going to have to come to terms with not seeing him.. Hopefully, I'll be able to have one in the US, but having to give it up when I return to my country will be a deterrent..
  3. Congratulations to everyone who got their admits!!! I got a reject from Berkeley today.. Through a stupid form email.. I regret applying there..
  4. Thanks for clearing this up guys!! @TakeruK: Caltech GPS!!! Nice!!! Congratulations!!!
  5. Hey everyone, It's finally time to start thinking about visas, so here I am. I've been accepted to a PhD program with full funding. So, I can either apply for the F1 or J1 visa. The deal is that my girlfriend is in the US and is currently waiting for her H1B visa (after finishing her masters on a F1 visa. She's currently on her OPT period). We are planning to get married during the early part of 2013. What exactly happens to both our visas after getting married? Does her H1B visa expire? Does our visa status have to change at all? I really have no clue about how these things work, would be glad for any help. Thanks for helping me out..
  6. Crap!! Then it's another reject for me.. No options in the bay area for me then..
  7. Well, if it IS a weeding method, I think they've succeeded.. I'm done waiting.. This Monday I'm accepting another offer and moving on with life!!
  8. If its Berkeley and MIT you're waiting for, then I guess there are quite a few people here who are waiting to hear from them.. So I guess they've not made their decisions yet.. Or they've made their decisions already and none of the people on this forum have been the ones who have been admitted or rejected.. I'm waiting for Berkeley too, but no for much longer..
  9. The results survey says that March 15-16 is when Berkeley EPS announces its results.. Hope they stick to the same schedule this year too.. All the best to everyone whose waiting!! I have a bad feeling about it though, don't think I'll make the cut..
  10. All the best for Utah!! Hope you don't have to wait till the middle of Apr to find out. Have you heard from any other places as yet?
  11. Yeah, how could I forget that!!! Waiting!!! Thats the worst part of the whole application process.. Well, maybe if you apply again, you'll get an admit from someplace in the first week of January and may not have to wait.. .. well, who am I kidding..
  12. Don't write off Berkeley as yet.. Its not over till its over.. Atleast thats what I tell myself. I don't think you'll regret it that much.. You'll have the experience of going through the whole application cycle, which cannot hurt.. You'll have done much more focused research and you don't have to write the GRE again.. The time and money you'll spend again is a pain though..
  13. From his website: Don't you hate ambiguous statements like these??
  14. Got rejected from the Dept. of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) from the University of California - Santa Cruz.. Wouldn't have attended it I guess, but would have liked an option in the Bay Area nonetheless.. Well, that leaves me waiting for Berkeley.. I had a couple of email conversations with my POI.. Guess I was applying more for the location, than for the program itself.. Serves me right??
  15. Really?? That's good to hear What's most appealing about it from your point of view?? I have to convince another person that the east coast is not so bad after all, what with the snow and everything..
  16. yeah, cruises and expeditions.. There was this blog about the DYNAMO field experiment in the Indian Ocean, designed to learn more about the MJO.. Cruises in tropical islands drive me jealous!! But I'm now too old to be going on field trips.. .. Disadvantage of taking a biiig break between undergrad and grad school..
  17. February was kinda ok for me..heard from a couple of places, met a couple of profs at a conference.. learnt that I need to work a ton on my social skills.. , especially with professors and other students..
  18. Thank you!!! Its fascinating isn't it, the support from people who you barely know.. Guess thats the reason internet forums can be so good for you, especially during this waiting time.. And we will be rooting for you this time next year round.. .. Well, hopefully you'll already have a few admits by now, but in case you need rooting, we'll be here..
  19. Yeah, wierd isn't it.. Europe and parts of Asia have had colder than usual winters..
  20. Its probably going to be Yale I think.. I've never even come close to seeing snow in my life!!!! PS: Apologies to the original poster for digressing this far from the orginal topic..
  21. I live 13 degrees north of the equator.. Any place I move to in the US would most probably be too cold.. .. Except maybe Texas or Florida or California.. I hope Im not going to regret moving to the east coast!!!
