I cried for an hour after I made my decision today. I'm not sure what those tears were from? Relief? Sadness? Regret? I still don't know if I made the right decision, but at least I made a decision. Has anyone else cried like that? I think it was because I was picking between somewhere I really preferred/wanted to go to and a school that I knew I would be stupid to reject. In the end the one I picked was the safer choice. I guess in this case I went with my head rather my heart. I wish I could have been more brave...but what's done is done, and I'm starting my PhD next year

Anyone have any advice for me? What about choosing between 1. an elite History department and 2. an interdisciplinary department that will allow me to get the same coursework/training in History (an MA) in addition to really great training in theory, ethnic studies, etc...? Both schools have really great advisers for me, and supporting faculty members. Also I would live in both cities (happily). Cost of living is probably about equal as well... In the context of the job market where so much is uncertain, do 20th century American historians really have much of a shot in this job market even if they're coming from an elite school? There will be hundreds of others like me nationally graduating with a PhD in History the year I finish. As opposed to a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary program that only graduates about 4/year? Which is the better bet? ugh, this is so tough :\

goldielocks - it was nice to meet you at Northwestern, good luck with your decision! In other news, I got an admit to UC Santa Barbara today (via email from a POI)! I was really surprised because it's fairly late in the game. Also, I don't know what the heck is going on with UCLA...I don't have a rejection or acceptance or anything yet. Are they done making acceptances? I assumed that it was a rejection at this point (along with UCSB) but then this acceptance happened today. I don't think UCLA holds a waitlist, do they?

They are done. The department visit is on Wednesday. Sorry

There's a Berkeley acceptance in the results search. Looks like all 11 were informed early February. I guess we can keep our fingers crossed for San Diego!

Did anyone apply to any Ethnic Studies programs? I got an informal rejection from Berkeley via email from my POI, but haven't heard anything from UC San Diego yet...
