  1. I'll be in Grad House this year too! I did my undergrad at UTSG, but I'm getting tired of having to spend hours of my day commuting. I did a tour of the place about a month ago, and I really liked it! I guess I'll be seeing you there then!
  2. It is okay to give her space. It was awkward with my friends too when I got my acceptance, and my conversations with those friends have decreased since then. It will pass over time. What I have found is that it is best not to talk about the grad school issue at all. Friends who got rejected at schools... well, I did not even have to ask whether or not they got accepted or rejected because you can tell by the way they act that they already were rejected. The only ones go around posting and talking about things are the ones who got accepted because they are excited about it. I found it was better not to ask the accept/reject question at all when it was obvious what had happened. It was clear that a lot of people feel embarrassed about being rejected and do not want to talk about it.
  3. I haven't started my program yet, but my mum once told me to stop going on these forums because it is an inaccurate representation of real life. She pointed out to me that people who post on forums are usually here to seek help, meaning that they are currently having problems with their program. I think most of the people who are actually happy with their program would not be on the forums because they are actually living out their program instead of ruminating and ranting about it. Have hope!
  4. Thanks for the reply! Actually, I was wondering about the suite-style format. Like for each bedroom, do you have locks and keys, or can anyone of your roommates access your bedroom? Also, recommendations of food places (can be restaurants, supermarkets, etc.) near Grad House?
  5. Not sure. But if you really need to use the Housing site and you still can't get your UTORid, then you could always purchase a guest membership. Call them and see? Ooh! I have questions about Grad House. 1. How was the social experience? Like are there a lot of social events and opportunities to make friends, or are people too busy and often isolated in their rooms? I've heard mixed things about the social life there. 2. Noise level? Can you actually work in your rooms, or did you have to go to a library? 3. Cleanliness? Thanks so much!
  6. Wow, what a useful thread! Thanks for all of the replies! I was wondering if anyone here is in a grad program that requires working with elementary school kids. I'm doing teaching and I have to do placements (practice teaching) at elementary schools. I saw the responses about teaching at the high school and university levels, but I was wondering if clothing would still be as big of an issue if I was teaching the younger grades. Would some of these styles would seem "overdone" if I used them in an elementary school setting? Would you dress more "formally," even if the rest of the school had teachers dressing more casually? Thoughts?
  7. The SGS site itself takes forever to update. I got my official package around the same time as songers did, but my SGS status still says "Under Review." Since I am also an undergrad, I also have a conditional offer. You need to complete those conditions before the program will allow you to register for classes.
  8. I forgot how, sorry. I actually did my undergrad at UofT, so I already have my UTORid. Not sure how it works at the graduate level, though if I had to guess, you would probably need to get your T-Card so that you can use your UofT account. And in that case, getting your T-Card requires going to Robarts Library in person. There's an option to buy a 8-week membership at the Housing UofT site (guest account) for $24, in case you need to use the site before you get your UTORid!
  9. When you guys get your UTORids, check out https://www.housing.utoronto.ca/. They have a really complete database of housing around campus, and a lot of the people that post up things are from UofT.
  10. Hi everyone! Also planning on living in downtown next year. Currently sent in my application to Graduate House, but I might be considering renting out an apartment too.
