One of my social work friends has a minor in women's studies. I don't think it is a disadvantage. Make sure you have volunteer experience and write excellent essays.

Seeking Online Masters in Social Work
michigan girl replied to GaryLamont's topic in Social Workers Forum
Only apply to CSWE-accredited social work schools. If you do not attend an accredited school, you will not be eligible to become a licensed social worker. -
Generally, the most competitive programs have acceptance rates below 80%.

College Towns: Boulder, CO; Ithaca, NY; Urbana-Champaign, IL; Evanston, IL (Northwestern) Big Cities (have many colleges but students don't dominate the population): Chicago, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, San Diego Boston is in the middle -- medium-size city with numerous colleges.
-
Make sure you consider college towns (i.e., Ann Arbor, Madison, Berkeley, Chapel Hill, etc..) They often have big-city amenities and cultural events.

I start classes after Labor Day (Sept 8th).

If the OP has federal loans, he could petition the federal govt to forgive him. His options are very limited for private loans. Petition the federal govt to allow bankruptcy on student loans.

My graduate school (Michigan) allows prospective students to apply to up to 3 programs per admissions cycle. I applied to two programs separately and was admitted to both schools. I am doing a dual-degree. Look for universities that offer that kind of flexibility.

Entertainment Bundle: TV, Landline, and/or Internet?
michigan girl replied to michigan girl's topic in Officially Grads
I finally placed an order for a landline and high-speed Internet. My monthly bill will be $49 with landline/DSL versus $45 for DSL only. I believe I made a good decision. The landline is very basic (local calls only). My roommate and I will rely mostly on our cell phones. We can use the landline for emergency use or place a local delivery call. Phone installation is free. -
I am one of the fortunate individuals who has relatives paying for my furniture. I got new, discounted furniture (e.g. a $700 bed frame on sale for $450). Shop at those stores. Sleeping on a quality mattress and bed was important to me. When I get a permanent job after graduate school, I will have nice, high-quality furniture that would look great wherever I move.

Wow, so it is true. I agree with tut that this new accelerated degree might be unfunded like its peers. Does anyone know would this degree work for those interested in higher education only?

Can you post a link stating Harvard will introduce this new doctoral degree?

Entertainment Bundle: TV, Landline, and/or Internet?
michigan girl replied to michigan girl's topic in Officially Grads
I have thought about getting a double bundle (landline/DSL) with AT&T. I find their basic local coverage to be expensive ($19.75). I cannot make calls to my family (same region, yet it would be considered long distance). I will still keep my cell phone. The only benefit i could see with a landline is to call toll-free numbers or local area businesses. Is it really worth it? -
Applying to Only One Program. . . (HGSE)

Does anyone know if Harvard GSE Master's committee admits students who have prior graduate coursework, or they prefer students with only bachelor's degrees? -
I have these messenger bags (fits up to a 13.3" laptop): http://www.ebags.com/ebags/unxpected_la ... elid=88864 http://www.ebags.com/ebags/savvy_laptop ... elid=88831 I love them because they're sturdy and versatile. You can easily use them for casual and professional styles.

I use messenger bags. I have already bought two bags that will handle my laptop. Altogether I will have 3 messengers bags I can interchange during the school year. Make sure the messenger bags are durable and padded well.

2009 Library Science Programs (masters)
michigan girl replied to jesso21's topic in Library Sciences Forum
There are no library science programs in Oregon or Washington? The bottom line is you must receive an MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution. If it's not accredited, it's not worth the money or time. Attending a campus school is much better for your career prospects (access to internships, etc.). -
Some complexes offer free Internet. If you have to purchase your own plan, I believe the most popular are AT&T (DSL) and Comcast (Cable). Netzero may work but I have no experience with them. I am personally considering AT&T.
-
He will need a Master's in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution if he wants to move up to administration (i.e. more pay, more leadership roles). A certificate won't help him.

Entertainment Bundle: TV, Landline, and/or Internet?
michigan girl replied to michigan girl's topic in Officially Grads
Hi Kahlan, did you also purchase a wireless modem? I currently use the service at home (I can use my laptop in any room) but I'm not sure if it's worth it when I move. -
I have secured housing, signed a lease, and in the process of choosing providers. I realized that I may not need cable service. However, I'm not sure if I should keep or ditch the landline service. I heard there are pros to keeping a landline. I usually just depend on my cell phone. High-speed Internet is definitely on my necessary list. If you were living in an apartment, which would you choose? I'm looking at $25/mo for only Internet or $45/mo for DSL/Landline (no long distance).

Best Advocacy/Policy MSW Programs
michigan girl replied to KatieinNewYork's topic in Social Workers Forum
You will want to consider the well-known social work programs for policy/advocacy type work such as Michigan, WashU, Columbia, and UCLA. -
I know what you mean. I am in repayment with two private loans and both their interest rates are 3-4%. I'm very reluctant to use the Grad Plus Loan. Interest rate is so high.

Let's say you need a laptop that is portable (by bus/train/plane). It's required to bring a laptop to your classes. Which laptop size would you choose?
