  1. I think it went to the humanities division in the interdisciplinary category.
  2. Just notified by my department that I won CGS!! So relieved! I am proof that it can be done without publications. Some stats: -starting my phd in the fall -no pubs -4 conferences at the time (3 grad, one professional) -MA SSHRC and OGS, a few other fellowships and awards -2 RAs -high gpa, hovering just above an A -spent weeks on the proposal (12 drafts in all). I seriously started to cry/hyperventilate when I found out!! The wait is finally over!
  3. I'm thinking you're right Zencarrot. I found this link yesterday, which outlines the faculty process for OGS, and it looks like the process at Western involves more than one stage. Also, it seems like the odds are not good, at least for my faculty. I agree that on first read the email gave me a rush of optimism, but now I am right back to feeling like this is a long shot. http://grad.uwo.ca/current_students/student_finances/ogs.html
  4. Thanks for the reply RelaxButterfly. I received an email yesterday letting me know that my faculty has "endorsed" my application and that the SGPS will contact me with the results within the next two weeks. Good luck everyone!
  5. Megan Boler, Jill Bennett, Alison Landsberg, Roman Krznaric, Suzanne Keen, Dan Zahavi, Carolyn Dean ...to name a few. I'm just finishing an MA thesis on the connection between empathy and material culture, so a couple of these suggestions have more of a visual studies slant.
  6. Does anyone know how OGS works at Western? I haven't heard anything from them since I submitted my application in Jan.
  7. Success! Finally. Going into the second year of my master's. 4.1/4.5 average in final two years, two RA's, many minor awards, one conference at the time, no publications.
  8. My grad director gave me a heart attack today. I sent a message asking if I should wait until SSHRC results are released to accept OGS. Was sent back a message, saying that I was not on the list he received and therefore rejected. My heart sank, and then I got over it. And then I receive a message twenty minutes later saying that he forgot I was an MA student, and that list has not been released yet! Talk about psyching somebody out!! This process needs to be over NOW!!!
  9. I'm not quite sure where your perceptions about cultural studies have come from. I'm currently doing an MA in cultural studies (I did my BA in English). The program I am taking is independent of English as it has faculty teaching in the department from 20 different departments ranging from history, English, sociology to geography, kinesiology, and environmental studies. Needless to say, it is a very independent program seeing as how there are such varied backgrounds. When I first read your post I thought that something like a cultural studies program would be right up your alley since we seem to have somewhat similar interests (my research focuses on aesthetics and narrative theory in conjunction with museums). I'm not certain if I'll be continuing with cultural studies for my Phd, but an MA in cultural studies has been, for me, the perfect way to explore my interests outside the confines of rigid literary periods and time-frames.
  10. My pre-Grad school bucket list includes -working -skydiving (might as well try this before I write my thesis!) -camping -drinking bellini's in the backyard -soaking up the sun (the library does not provide adequate doses of Vitamin D during the school year). -polishing a paper for publication -finding a place to live -paperwork. Moving across the country apparently takes a lot of preparation! -finishing RA work -not killing my co-workers -spending as much time with friends and family as possible. I will miss all of the wonderful people in my life dearly!!
  11. I received my student number from my department over a week ago. However, It still doesn't show up on the applications page.
  12. I am definitely leaning towards living in residence. This is going to be quite a long distance move for me so I don't want the hassle of buying/moving furniture that far. I've lived in residence my entire undergrad and it has been an overall good experience...plus you don't have the hassle of roommates/crazy people invading your space
  13. I'm a new Queen's admit (!) and when I tried to apply for graduate housing I ran into the same issue. When I contacted the SGS they told me told me that they were switching over to a new system for student numbers/cards and that this part of the system (assigning new student numbers) was not working quite yet. The woman I talked to said it might be another month or so before it is working, so don't be alarmed!
