  1. Why do you lack so much confidence? Stanford is not a dream school, you are competitive! These stats are great! I do not know a lot about your field to recommend other schools but I do recommend applying to other top schools than Berkeley and Stanford like Ivy leagues (im assuming they have excellent programs in your field). One thing you did not mention is what do you want to apply for: a master's or PhD. In any case you are competitive in both and I know you think you are being modest by sounding like you are not impressed with your stats but you are not doing people with lower ones any favor by doing so. I did not seem as much competent in my field when I applied but I got into my dream school . Good luck! You could always donate to green peace unless you think they are a political group. cheers!
  2. Hey! There are no standard GRE test scores for CMU admission, its one part of a big application. Though the average math GRE of admitted applicants is 765, this should act as a guideline. If you have some solid work experience you should be a good fit for the ECE master's program. Good luck!
  3. If you love what you do, then either get by (its just a master's so its not very long) or see if you can change advisor.

You have nothing to worry about! A school that would give a damn about how you did ages ago is a school you do not want to go to anyway! Your medical condition and impressive come back in undergrad will really boost your application. You have a master's too so that really helps. I think you know that you deserve a good school for your PhD but you are just being paranoid and that's normal. Good luck in your applications!
  5. An MFA is art! A PhD cannot be an art program it can be something art academic like art critique or art history but it cannot be about doing art. So it is equivalent in the sense that it is the highest degree in actually doing art. Academically an MFA is not exactly a PhD but not an MA either. So to be clear: MFA=Doing art such as illustration, drawing, theater, interior design, etc.. PhD=Art critique, art history, the impact of renaissance culture on the evolution of art in Europe or something like that. So it would be more like a social science sort of thing. I think many professors in fine arts have MFA's not PhD's but please double check that. If you love art do the MFA, if you love blabbering about do the PhD . cheers!
  6. You need to understand that this is your academic advisor and not your research advisor. He is just kind of a legal advisor so you dont really have a relationship with him.
  7. Most schools do not admit in spring 2012. Funds are managed every fall and thats when new PhD students are admitted. Your verbal GRE might hurt you, why dont u retake the exam? Try to score even higher on the quantitative (although it is already good)? Other than that the schools you are interested in are reasonable. You should be able to get a few admissions. Good luck!
  8. They are both really good schools. I tend to think Notre dame is better in terms of academic development. With a young adviser fighting for her tenure she can really push you far. But Mcgill seems better in terms of going back home frequently. Now is the time to pick career over other things! Go to Notre dame! cheers!
  9. The schools you are applying too are reasonable. Looking at your stats I think you are a competitive applicant. I had similar ones and got into the school I really wanted for this fall. Apply to the four schools and even apply to like 3 or 4 other really good ones (no harm in applying to the top ones too). Write really good statements and you will get a few options come April 2012. Good luck!
  10. What a b....! If you are working hard you are not a waste of money! Just keep doing that and dont loose motivation. I respect you for making progress after she called you that. This is evidence to how screwed up the academic world can become sometimes. Individuals or people are assets and investments, it is BS. I always used to think academia is running away from the filthy corporate world. Had to learn it the hard way.
  11. Totally agree. Only I am not free now I am finishing my undergraduate degree. But after getting accepted to grad school I lost all motivation to work as an undergrad. I cannot wait for september!
  12. Hi! I got accepted into the PhD MechE this fall. I already accepted the offer for admission and I'm very excited. For the poster from the Pitt area, if I arrive to Pitt by August 1 will that leave me enough time to find a one bedroom in the squirell hill or shadyside areas? From what I have seen online you can find 1 bedrooms in these areas for 650-750 rent. Is it possible to still find these apartments August 1? Thanks a lot!
  13. I totally agree. Your adviser is your mentor, you said it yourself. And guess what? He is also a human being! He will understand and start taking this into consideration. Screw being first anther on the second part! You have a life waiting for you Congratulations on what you have achieved, in your moments of despair you act as a role model for many of us. I sincerely wish you the best.
  14. OP!!! Where the hell are you???? What did you end up doing?? You can't just cut a story short. People are starting to get suspicious!!
  15. Oh and as far as places, I can give you some good input. Gtech wins because you will have a semester in France, then see Atlanta. Atlanta is a nice city with a great culture. Pittsburgh is also a very complete city and the best thing about is the ratio of how much of a city you get to the cost of living. High ratio!! They both beat michigan. Ann arbor is one of the nicest college towns in the US but that's it. Still a good choice in terms of living but relative to the two others it can't win. UNLESS you really don't care about being in a city and a warm complete college town would suffice. These things are extremely relative, and thats where the domestic students have the advantage they have a better picture of places to live, let alone can actually visit them. Hope this helps!
