  1. I am applying for the 2-year at UofT and Laurier. I also applied last year (only to UofT) and made the waitlist. Hopefully this year will be better, haha. Anyways, at the open house I went to for UofT, they said they do not look at the bulk of applications until all are in. They start to calculate GPAs earlier, however they are probably just starting to assess applications now. I found out I was waitlisted on April 14th last year. York seems to be a bit later (according to the results section here) and the only MSW from Ryerson was accepted on February 22nd last year. The advanced standing acceptances at UofT went out earlier last year, around mid March. We have a while to wait. Good luck to you
  2. That is awesome! Congratulations!
  3. I agree with the last poster. If you can find a job, you should feel lucky; this is not a time to be picky. In any case, I think a change in attitude would allow you to enjoy any job you have. You can learn something from any job, and not being formally educated does not make one a moron. They probably have years of experience in whatever they do and plenty of skills and knowledge to share with you. Why not apply at local stores, restaurants, and businesses (which are typically more understanding that you will soon leave) and volunteer in psychology related places at the same time? You are then still developing the specific skills you want, adding to your graduate school resume (in case you are not accepted this year & need to reapply), and you have income coming in. I work as a part time research assistant, a real estate secretary, volunteer at a local harm reduction program, and volunteer at a school.. I am also a Psychology major and most of what I am doing is directly related to my career choices, despite not being full time employment..
  4. I think it depends on the program you are applying to. Mine count the last year or two years (depending on the school) worth of credits, including credits after graduation. Others look at only third and fourth year courses (regardless of what year you took them in) or at the entire gpa. I would e-mail your school (if it does not say on the website) and ask how they calculate gpas.
  5. Thanks to both of you. There were a lot of good ideas in both posts. I am actually having trouble with both. I have a few accomplishments in mind, namely overcoming anxiety disorders and getting an article published during my undergrad.. I have been asking people I know and they keep telling me to write about my article, however I don't see that setting me apart from anyone else and I am worried my anxiety story will either say "feel sorry for me" or ""I cannot handle the added stress of grad school" despite not meaning to say either..
  6. I am just finishing the last of my application essays, but I am at a complete loss. My last question is "Describe your most substantial accomplishment and explain why you view it as such." It seems like it should be an easy question, but I have complete writer's block. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice when writing such an abstract answer?
  7. I was waitlisted at UofT. My goal is to go there.. I'm hopeful, but weary. My fingers are crossed for the both of us And everyone here.. hah
  8. My deadlines are December 15 (Toronto University) and January 15 (Wilfrid Laurier University)... This is my second year of graduate applications. Hopefully this year I get off the waitlist and into a program!
  9. When does the program you're applying to start? Spring 2013? I was waitlisted for my program and could have been notified of acceptance up until the start date, which was September 6, 2011. If the start date isn't until Spring 2013, I'd say it is reasonable that you could be notified after December 15, 2012. However, if you are supposed to start in Spring 2012, I'd say it could be a typo. Most schools give the acceptances a set time to accept/reject offers and then send out a mass round of waitlist acceptances once they know how many they need..
  10. Did you find out??
  11. I would look over yours. I am also an applicant, but I am quite good at editing. I also applied last year and gained waitlist results; for such a competitive program here, I must have done at least a little right..
  12. Haha. Long for sure. Maybe we should just start a new thread though.. this one is huge just from last year..
  13. Thank you! I decided to e-mail him one last time and he replied promptly, stating that he thought he had replied already.
  14. A professor who previously agreed to be a reference for me for my Masters program is not responding to my e-mails. He is not teaching at my school anymore and works out of another organization, so he does not have a public phone number that I can reach him at. There are other professors that I could ask, but I have had this professor during every year of my undergraduate degree and I feel like he will give a much more accurate reference than anyone else. My problem is that he still has not responded, but I need all my references to be confirmed before I can finish filling out my application, and my other references are waiting on me. Should I attempt to find a new reference in order to please my other professors and get my application ready, or should I wait slightly longer for my professor to get back to me?
  15. You could apply to a Canadian PhD program, however there are a lot more American PhD programs to apply to and they generally accept a lot more students. Grad school in general is very limited in Canada and thus very competitive. I would say it would be beneficial to get your PhD in Canada if there is a program you really want. In other words, it would be beneficial to further look into the idea, but I would apply to schools in both the USA and Canada.
  16. For the 2011 Fall start, I applied to only one school. I made the waitlist, but no spots opened up for me. In any case, I am reapplying this year to two schools. There are only 5 possible schools for my program in my province and only two of them suite my personal interests. I don't think there's a point in applying to additional schools that I do not wish to attend.. I would just recommend that you have a back-up plan. I wish you all the luck, of course, however there is always a chance that you will not make the cut this year. Have a plan, just in case!
  17. My program's applications come out between the end of September and early October. They are due in December and January. This is typically seen as early, at least in Ontario..
  18. I applied for a 2-year Masters of Social Work program last year. I only applied to one school because I was juggling an undergraduate overload while completing my thesis in Psychology. I made the wait list at my chosen school, but was not accepted. I know that my undergrad school forgot about my final marks and did not send them out until over a month after they were due. By the time they got my marks, which had improved a lot, both rounds of wait list acceptances had already gone out. Even since then I have improved. I am a second author on a paper that is pending publishing and I am attending conferences this year for the paper. I am applying for the OGS scholarship and have a 3.9 to 4.0 gpa depending on the way the school takes my average.. I am applying again this year but I am insanely anxious about just facing rejection again. Has anyone else felt this anxiety regarding reapplying? And does anyone have happy stories about their reapplication process?
  19. Hey, Like many others, I have been waitlisted for the University of Toronto's 2 year Master of Social Work program. I know a lot of people on the results page have mentioned this program but few people have listed any of their stats. For anyone who wants to, here's a page to list our stats and status.. and, with any luck, we'll all end up accepted in meeting each other in September! Status: Waitlisted since April 15 Stats: 3.9 GPA (88.5 average in last year) although they just saw that now - 3.7 GPA second last year as a Psychology Major. Volunteer experience within school, social work experience working at summer camps for children with learning disabilities. Personally I want to get into the mental health stream. Currently a research assistant, but that is not in the application because it only started in April. Anyways, if anyone who was accepted did anything particular that might have helped them out, let us know too? Maybe it can help those on the waitlist if we end up reapplying next year.
