  1. Same here, except with Comp Lit. I've received my rejections for the PhD programs, but I'm awaiting responses to my masters apps. Good luck! I hope the pools are too overrun with people deferred from the PhD programs. That's my fear at the moment!
  2. I'm an undergrad at St. Thomas. The English grad program has some fantastic professors and St. Thomas is liberal with funding. They channel a lot of their money into scholarships and grants, to both undergrads and post-grads. It's worth looking at.
  3. I've begun looking at other schools to apply to next year, as well. Branching out further north than Toronto and further south than Chicago. Also interested in Charles University in Prague, University of Zagreb, 3 Norwegian schools and several in Germany and Austria. I applied to only 5--next year, perhaps I'll make it 25. :x
  4. I don't believe Madison maintains that same philosophy. However, some departments have seen some hard financial times over the past few years. The only Minnesotan I know who was admitted into the U of M was born in Eritrea.
  5. Still no word from Chicago... ! My mailbox was empty (save some useless gym advert) today. Peculiar... I guess, as I'm still raw from my Oregon rejection, I'd rather not receive two consecutive responses. My poor undergrad ego can only endure so much!
  6. Here's to hoping that they're not as stingy with MA applicants!
  7. Yes, I'm dead serious. Isn't that just utterly bizarre? And I've heard the exact same. I'm a Wisconsinite finishing her undergrad in Minnesota at a private college in the TC, so I suppose I belong to the exact demographic they don't favor. Poor us. It's such a surprise, seeing as my funds are considerably smaller, yet they prefer applicants with bulkier tuitions which they often end up covering... no offense at all to you out-of-staters, but I find it baffling. Aren't they suffering financially? Ooohh well.
  8. Mmm... we'll see. I imagine they've contacted the accepted students via email already, but then again, I have no experience applying to graduate school. Best of luck with the rest of your choices---and congratulations on getting waitlisted at two. MUCH better than hearing a flat-out "no"!
  9. Anyone who applied for comp lit? Will the entire department of humanities have sent all acceptance letters via email, and should those who have not heard back yet expect rejection? I don't know how closely tied the English and Comp Lit programs are. I assume only vaguely, but it's worth it to ask!
  10. I had two and was rejected from both! Perhaps Madison has evolved into my new safety school, since I am a Wisconsin resident... although I'm not entirely sure whether that helps my application. Maybe it's time for me to stand outside the department chair's window and make puppydog faces.
  11. I received the opposite of an acceptance from the mailman. Best of luck to the rest of you who are still waiting.
  12. I heard back from Minnesota fairly promptly--around Valentine's Day? I remember being just past the two-month mark. Anyway, I was rejected via email in the most peculiar way. The director expressed his understanding of my dejection, because his girlfriend broke up with him many years ago and he was heartbroken. And also, Minnesota is facing a financial crisis. I have heard that they feel less inclined to accepting residents of Minnesota and Wisconsin; I am from the former, so I suppose I feel less ashamed. Good luck to the rest of you, though!
  13. One year later...! I've applied to Toronto, Chicago, Oregon, Minnesota and Madison. So far, I've been rejected at Oregon and Minnesota and am pretty heartbroken over the former, it being my top choice. I regret my decision not to apply to German programs, as well! I expect a rejection at Toronto due to their lack of funding and rejection from Chicago (this week) due to its status as my stretch school... apparently I'm shooting for the moon. Perhaps Madison is still a feasible option. Anyone else received news?
