  1. My first paragraph rejection letter from the department chair at the U of M said this:  Because this is the exact same sort of thing as being dumped by your girlfriend. I see.
  2. Nope, but I received my rejection letter from the MA program.
  3. 0. zoberg 1. Only one 2. Only five 3. Only three, two more to go 4. My personal statement and writing sample weren't revised enough. 5. Yes. 6. Revise, revise, revise. Finish translating the book. 7. Teach abroad with Fulbright if I get in, au pair in France, German or Austria, or move to some random city and find a job at a publishing firm / I want to teach German or English writing at a university and translate Austrian literature on the side. Maybe work as an editor for a publishing company or a literary magazine.
  4. Here you are! http://www.swan.ac.uk/german/bcla/clww.htm I have found it INSANELY helpful. I hope you do, too. I have narrowed down my choices to Helsinki, Wien (Vienna), Muenster, Freie Universitaet Berlin, Kent (the Cambridge-Paris program) and Edinburgh. Subject to change! Thanks, everyone!
  5. Never. You couldn't make me. They don't have Comp Lit, anyway.
  6. WIKIPEDIA Just kidding. If you have access to the engines, Illumina and Project Muse are great.
  7. Good luck, OP! I'm hoping that you experience a miracle, as well! But, in all fairness, I don't think it would be a miracle, per se---I think it would come deserved.
  8. Nope, and haven't received a rejection either! I'm just soooo so tempted to go around and tell everyone I'm waitlisted. Just to make myself feel better. Although I'm waiting to hear from the MA program.
  9. The Pony Express is also a recommended method of delivery.

    Toronto, ON

Congrats! What masters program, if I might ask? It's my dream school, and I hope to hear a response to my application to the MA comp. lit. program soon-ish!
  11. Same question for comp. lit. programs. I'm waiting on Madison, Chicago and Toronto.
  12. Somewhat OT, but I sort of lose respect for unis that are anal about test scores. I'm a horrible test-taker, but I have 3.85 GPA and a killer CV (in my opinion). Suck it, University of Whatever.
  13. Yes, you may have it back now. Thanks.
  14. Dear MDLee, Upon enthusiastic review of your application, it is my pleasure to inform you of your acceptance into the University of TGC. Your tuition is fully covered and you will receive an unfortunately meager stipend of $180,000 a year. The Committee.
  15. I've only applied to masters programs at the U's of Chicago, Toronto and Wisconsin. Right now, I'm TERRIFIED that I stand no chance. I have heard nothing. Others have heard of rejection at Chicago; I'm not sure about acceptance in my program. Wisconsin and Toronto Comp Lit seem to take their sweet time, but still, this incessant waiting is really getting to me. Rant over.
  16. MDLee: JINX! Also, no GRE required. Just a simple test composed by the university, comprised of questions such as: What is the capital of YOUR MOM? How many fingers do you have? Would you like a cookie? You only receive points if you come up with answers as genius as you obviously are!
  17. Haven't you heard of it? It's very prestigious. Among its reputed programs, offering MAs, PhDs and infinite funding, are comparative literature, economics, computer science, psychology, English... I'm drawing a blank on the rest, any help here? Also, they don't employ adcoms. They simply attract the best and brightest post-graduate students across the nation, as well as the most knowledgeable and engaging professors who will inspire you to change the world and then find you a high-paying job when it's all over. Accepting applications now! -- For those of us who, during this insufferable waiting period, simply dream up the ideal institute... which would, naturally, accept us in a heartbeat. Care to elaborate?
  18. I'll answer that for you. School: University of Oregon; University of Minnesota; University of Toronto; University of Chicago; University of Wisconsin (also, the Fulbright Program in Austria!) Program (MA/PhD): PhD; PhD; MA (2 yr); MA; MA status(accepted/rejected/waitlisted): rejected; rejected; N/A; N/A; N/A GPA: 3.85 GRE: 580 V, 620 Q, 4.5 W (I'm a LOUSY test-taker.) work experience(yrs): 2 years as editor of uni's student-run literary mag.; 1 year of independent literary translation

    0 for 8

0 for 2. Still waiting on 3--two of which, of course, happen to be stretch schools. Faaantastic. We should start our own graduate school.
  20. So, as I'm receiving unpleasant responses from American universities (and expected one from Canada), I'm becoming more and more convinced that I ought to complete my post-graduate studies in Europe. There's a fantastic website created by the British Comparative Literature Association which lists every comp lit program across the globe. Many of these universities have later deadlines, such as late March, early May, and German universities don't cut off until July for the fall semester. As of right now, I'm seriously considering the University of Kent (both the 1-yr Canterbury and Canterbury-Paris programs), University of Edinburgh, Charles University in Prague, Helsinki University, University of Vienna (Universitaet Wien) and Uppsala University in Sweden (this being my stretch school due to the university's prestige). I've completed the first two applications and am psyched to begin the rest. Have you applied at any programs off of North America? Are you planning to?
  21. Still haven't received a thing for comp. lit! Rejections have already been reported... maybe I should be happy-ish? Although I'm sort of thinking "wtf" because I just got rejected from Oregon and Minnesota, my non-stretches...

    Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee has turned very hipster. Lots of festivals in the summer, Summerfest being the most popular--an 11-day music festival with bands for baby boomers, country-freaks and indie nerds. There are a ton of condos being erected in the Third Ward, undeniably the 'coolest' area of Milwaukee (where you'll find a number of small, classy restaurants, Alterra and Anthropologie). Shopping's good at Mayfair and Bayshore. The weather's great, thanks to the Lake Effect, which makes winters a little warmer and summers a little cooler. I grew up in Milwaukee. I can answer (almost) any question!

    Minneapolis, MN

The Mall of America is teeming with commercialization and stinky Americans who feel compelled to indulge in cheesy rides and overstuffed crepes. It is not my favorite part of the Twin Cities. St. Paul and Minneapolis are dramatically different. Downtown SP is quiet but beautiful, especially in the summer, when it plays host to a farmers market and several art and film festivals. Minneapolis is where the blackberry mojito-drinking hipsters live, and it's GIANT. I live somewhere in the middle, right off of Summit Avenue, where the mansions are located and where JOSH HARNETT (o-m-g)'s family lives. Running parallel to Summit is Grand Ave, on which is situated a Whole Foods, Macalester College, a Breadsmith, and lots of local and independent businesses. It's a neat area. The average rent for a multi-person apartment is 400-500 in this area. In the summer, it's fricking hot. In the winter, it's fricking cold. I always wish for the opposite season.
  24. Last night, I dreamt that I was checking my Facebook and I received a message from the University of Wisconsin. In the message, they had written, You are rejected. in blue font and everything. I dreamt I was denied admittance by Madison via Facebook. How lame is that? Have you had any admission-related dreams, now that grad school is on your mind so often?
