  1. I'm trying to add you to my Google Reader but for some reason it's not working...again, after work. Work ruins all my fun. ;(

Re: Westchester It'd be a DIFFERENT New York experience, but I think if the idea of a more suburban lifestyle appeals to you enough for you to consider it, it might be a preferable one...the commute would probably be a real pain, though, with traffic is taken into account. If it's still worth it to you (and I'm not trying to be discouraging...if I were in your shoes, it might be worth it to me!) then give it a shot.
  3. Great idea! I will check out your blog (later, when I'm not at work lol) and I hope you'll take a look at mine.
  4. I'm moving about three hours away, so I'm gonna pack my car plus a friend's (hopefully a friend with an SUV!) and head up, then bring other stuff up following trips home.
  5. So today I noticed a trend of recommended reading threads throughout the site, including the sociocultural one here, and thought I'd add to the list. Sometime between now and September I plan to read the following: Red Queen and Genome by Matt Ridley, Evolutions's Rainbow (Author's name escapes me at the moment) and The Coming Plague by Laurie Garrett, along with a few other epidemiology "adventure" tales ala Richard Preston. I MAY try to fit in The Ancestor's Tale, but I'm not sure yet- I wanna read plenty of novels too while I still have a chance.
  6. I think that if you do decide to go the roommate route (which I think I'm going to do, so wish me luck!!) it's important to be up front about what you expect from a shared living situation. Because I am fairly social and will be living in a new city, I am really hoping for the kind of roommate situation that Eigen describes. I think I would feel awkward living with someone if it felt like we were only living together out of financial necessity. With that said, I DO value my privacy and personal space tremendously, so someone with no boundaries who came into my room without knocking would drive me absolutely BATTY. My main concern is that IF I get a roommate we have similar ideas of where our boundaries are.
  7. I know, but when it comes down to it an organization's website in this day and age is their public face. It MATTERS that it's done with at least a minimum of thought and skill. That's all I'm saying.
  8. Sigaba~ I totally agree! I really only get judgy about it when the uder interface is REALLY poor and ligitimately hard to understand/navigate. A website doesn't have to be pretty or fancy to adequately fulfill its purpose...in fact, I can't even think of a university webpage that I've found so poorly done as to be a real turnoff.
  9. Like some others I've been keeping my supervisors informed throughout the entire process, so it's really mostly a matter of what seems most logical as the summer progresses...if we get really busy I'll stay a little longer and if we're not maybe I'll take a few extra days to relax before I move.
  10. First off let me just say that I am SO with you on the senioritis feeling...as evidenced by the fact that I am prowling the GC forums while at work. I keep having to minimize the page when my boss walks in. I'll probably be staying here as long as possible, though, since I already have some debt and about to incur a whole HELL of a lot more in the form of student loans (yay for unfunded masters programs). I'm hoping to move in the beginning of August, so whichever Friday comes before that first weekend will likely be my last day. As it stands I am taking a week off in June as well, which will (hopefully) help me out of this slump and help me power through that last month and a half...
  11. Not that is should be the be-all-and-end-all, but a remarkably poor website would indicate to me a lack of pride in presentation and/or a poor understanding of professional communication standards, just as a SoP typed up in purple comic sans might indicate the same. To each his own, though. I'm sure this view could close doors for me but I'm willing to risk that.
  12. Don't worry, Kelkel...we'll all figure this out. I will keep you (and the others) posted if I go up there and find out any worthwhile info.
  13. Would anyone who is able to be interested in getting together sometime in May in Binghamton to maybe have breakfast or lunch together and then go our separate ways for apartment hunting and then maybe meet back up after? For moral support and whatnot...and also this way if a place is REALLY awful one person could let the rest of us know not to waste our time. Just a thought. I admit I'm just getting antsy to start meeting people and figuring out what my life is gonna look like in the fall lol.
  14. I'm thinking about sharing an apartment. If I find a situation (roommate who is open to it, enough space, reasonable rent) I'd love to bring my Siberian Husky with me...she's about 40 lbs. I'm fully prepared to leave her with my mom if I have to, though.
  15. One of my good friends is completely hooked on Mad Men. I've never seen it but have been thinking about giving it a try.
  16. I'm on goodreads!
  17. So what are you guys thinking for the living situation? Do you plan to live alone or with roommates? I had been pretty set onliving alone but now I am rethinking that. Thoughts?
  18. I'm looking to go in June as well, but I might pop up in May for a day or two if I see something really promising since I'm so close by (relatively speaking). I am envious that you get to bring your pet...I've decided that I will most likely be leaving my doggy with my mom, and that makes me really sad...with that said, if you find two bedroom that will accept two pets including a siberian husky and you want a roommate, let me know.
  19. Seriously, guys...let's keep this thread active! Let's keeo each other posted on when we're going apartment hunting and whatnot. And especially let's go for that drink!
  20. UMDNJ?
  21. I agree. I feel like with a little bit of reframing and a few more GRE points can make you pretty competitive for PhD programs. Maybe take the year to get in touch with people who are doing what you want to be doing.
  22. So what does everyone have queued up on their DVR to distract themselves? When I get offline I'll be watching House and Hart of Dixie.
  23. I'll be coming from north Jersey, ~12 miles outside of Manhattan. It's about three hours from me to Bing.

Definitely true. I guess I just can't get over the cost of living there. SooperStudent, sorry if my original reply was completely unhelpful. :/
  25. Very cool! Let's be sure to keep in touch. Where will you be moving from?
