  1. Thanks, but I actually just went ahead and accepted the offer I already have. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear something!
  2. Thanks! I know! We were so convinced we weren't going to get in anywhere! I can't wait to join academia with all the friends I made on here! We definitely need to keep in touch and meet up at the MLA or something! *Edit* Wow, what a lot of exclamation points! You can tell how excited I am to have finally made a decision!
  3. After considering everything, I went ahead and accepted the offer I already have. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear something, though!
  4. I just bit the bullet and officially accepted UC Riverside's offer! California, here I come!
  5. Hmmmm.......The cost of living must be REALLY low for that kind of stipend. That is almost half of my current offer....I wonder how much we should put into the money we are offered.....
  6. Two of my professors went to UGA and they loved it. One does 19th century British and one does 19th century American. I also have one friend is there now and who accepted an offer there for the fall, and they both are very excited about the program. .
  7. Hmmmmm.....This morning, I was convinced I wouldn't hear anything so I was ready to go ahead and accept my other offer, but now, I feel like maybe I should wait. The problem is, I don't know much about what they offer, which is why I am keeping my options open. Does anyone have any details they could share about the offer? Teaching load? Money? Anything would be appreciated.
  8. Sorry to hear that, cread. However, I would like to ask what you wrote in your inquiry. I want to send an email to another school I am wait listed at, but I'm not really sure how to word the email.
  9. I am in a similar position. I am really leaning toward one school, but I am on a wait list for a school that I would consider. To be honest, I don't know if I would even take the wait list offer if I got it, but I really don't know what I would do unless I get it, so I am nervous to go ahead and accept the offer I have been leaning towards and then end up getting in off the wait list and regretting my decision.....But at the same time, I am like 90% sure I would take the offer I have now, and I am feeling a little pressured to accept it already (they have been very nice, but all the niceness is what is making me feel bad), so a part of me just wants to accept it and move on with my life..... ugh.
  10. I haven't heard anything since I found out I was on the wait list, but I haven't inquired, either.
  11. I am getting a "Timshel" tattoo someday. I've wanted it for a long time. It's from Steinbeck's East of Eden.
  12. Has anyone on the wait list for the PhD contacted the department? I am debating on whether or not to contact them for an update to see if getting in off the wait list is a possibility or if they know when they could notify.
  13. Awesome! Thanks! Have you heard anything about your UCR waitlist? I'm pretty positive I'll be accepting their offer.
  14. I am currently working on something with graphic memoirs, so I am bumping this topic. Does anyone have any reading suggestions for texts on visual rhetoric?
  15. I'm sort of in a similar situation. I was accepted to a school that ranks in the 40s (USNWR) and wait listed at a school in the 50s, and I've been trying to decide what I would do if I get in off the wait list. The higher ranked school is more money, a desirable location, and nice, knowledgeable faculty/staff. However, the lower rank school is more "well-known" and has placed more people in TT university positions than the higher ranked one (recently, most of the graduates from the higher ranked school has been placing in community colleges). I really don't know what to do if I get in off the wait list......Ugh... P.S. I should also mention they are both a pretty good fit but in different ways....
  16. To be honest, I learned about them through my own research of programs. I went to a state school for my Masters, so the only schools I had really heard of were the really big names and the schools my professors went to. So, when I decided to apply, I went through and looked at each school from the top 100 on USNWR and picked the ones that aligned the most with my area of interest.
  17. We have talked a lot on here about how important it is to professionalize yourself, and one of the ways you can do that is to be a part of a professional organization. Therefore, I thought this might be a good place to list some of the groups you are members of so others have an idea of what is out there. For example, I am a member of MLA and CEA(College English Association). What about everyone else?
  18. Well, I know, for me, during my first year of getting my MA we took 3 classes a semester and you had to read at LEAST one book a week for each class, so that means we were reading 3 full-length novels a week. That might give you a more tangible idea of the reading load.
  19. Also, I just wanted to mention that the University of California Riverside is known for their work with science fiction. It has a huge collection at the library and well-known people in the field that work there.
  20. That is basically the gist of what was in my letter. My letter was just a bit longer and more specific, but it basically stated the same information.
  21. The response I got was an empty email that had a letter attached to it. I am assuming it is the letter that was mailed to me. It was dated the 14th, so you should be getting your response soon. The letter did say, however, that the 8 offers had already been made. I don't know if they were made at the same time via mail or not, but that's what the letter said.
  22. Gahhhh. Being wait listed is torture. I have been accepted one place and wait listed at two others. I think I will still end up taking the acceptance I got, but I'm not 100 percent. I am assuming that wait list spots are usually given on like the 15. Does anyone know of anecdotal evidence of people getting accepted off the wait list in March?
  23. I got a response back. I'm wait listed. There were 140 applicants and they only had 8 spots. I was sent a copy of the letter that I am assuming they mailed to me that was dated the 14th.
