Well... this did just happen.

Awesome verbal score! I am in at Buffalo and my overall GRE is exactly 313. I wonder if it's so strict that if I'd gotten a 312 if it would be a different story, or if they are guidelines that can be bent.

LOL I'd say they're more likely hoping to not have to deal with finding a new dealer in their new city. -

I suspect applications to all schools are up at least 10% since November. -
I disagree with this. I know many people who are strong verbally but struggle immensely with math, as proven by my throwaway-151 and the fact that others might put a lot of time in studying to get that score (and likewise, the throwaway 169 that some other folks might get). One thing that GRE scores do not measure is effort. On the other hand, I could see the math GRE being a consideration in general intellectual capacity. There is a reason that my undergrad allowed me to take logic in place of a math course. These aren't totally separate intellectual processes, and being good at math often goes hand-in-hand with clear, logical thinking and the ability to construct a good argument. I wouldn't bet across the board that this is the case, but I can see this perspective more than the "GRE is a task, complete it" idea. Sure, I COULD HAVE studied math and done a lot better at it, but that was time I spent instead on reading and writing and completing more important tasks.

Jump! Congrats! It is more waiting, which sucks, but it's great news. I hope it works out for you there - it's a great program! -

YES. I am so excited to see this! Excellent choice. Except that Top-15 schools DO NOT have 100% placement rants, and a lot of far lower ranked programs have above-average rates. The ranking of the school you attend largely affects the types of schools you will apply to (be in large R1 schools, small liberal arts colleges, or community colleges), but not ultimately whether you get a TT spot. I FEEL LIKE I SAY THIS A LOT, but these are simple numbers. MATH MATH MATH. I have also heard from a professor that candidates from the very top schools are often not prepared for the job market, though that is just anecdote. Here are rankings by outcome: http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/english/rank/_________M______________________________________________________U They're slightly outdated by this is the category: "Overall support and outcomes: The program supports a high fraction of students, students graduate quickly and get jobs, and the program tracks student placements." If you look at programs individually there are some placement rates available under "outcomes," though again, they may be outdated. -

Guys, I wanna go to college for the rest of my life! LOL LOL LOL LOL, Just kidding. This will never be you again. This will be your students. -
Another quantitative 151 over here! I did the same - tried to remember a few formulas, and then went in cold. I used to be good at math once upon a time so I counted on that because it seemed like a waste of time to focus on it too much when I had so many other things to work on. A lot of the questions I just stared at because I could not even begin to remember how to approach them (F'in triangles). When I took the text, 151 was 56th percentile, and a month later, it fell to 48. It is what it is. 151 club or bust! I agree that if you can prove that you are capable of doing a bit of mathematical work and meet University minimums, you're in the clear. I would not waste much time working on this part of the test if you're scoring at least 40th or so percentile.

HOW much do you learn in MA?
asleepawake replied to Emily Eyefinger's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
This times a million. I'd like to add that depending on where you get your PhD, the MA may be the only time this is true. A current Top-30 PhD student/graduate of my MA program who ran a PhD application workshop I attended basically told us that in several years in her program, she has never gotten direct feedback on a seminar paper in the way she did as an MA student. This may or may not be true everywhere, and I assume many places that it is not, but it is worth thinking about. -

OH NO. Thanks for giving me something to think about for a week or so and then to probably give up on. Isn't it too early for this collection? What if I write a paper and then a new episode airs and I have to throw it away? I haven't watched it yet because my DVR messed up but it's on again right now so in 30 minutes I will let you know if you're completely off base or what. Clearly, I've already given up on my gif-only policy. However, every post will nonetheless still include a gif. -
Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants
asleepawake replied to harvardlonghorn's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
The result on the board is mine. I don't know for sure the status of other applicants, but I believe I was contacted early because I was nominated for a University-wide fellowship. I wouldn't worry too much yet because the school has traditionally notified in March-ish. Good luck! -

Even with two, I'm certain they are mistakes. My name is pretty common... Somebody could easily have entered the wrong e-mail address. Mostly irrational? Yes. But impossible? Of course not! So a completely normally thing to worry about... -

I thought I'd revive this thread because it's a good idea. I'm curious how those with acceptances are going about making their decisions, researching the program(s) they've gotten into, etc. It is still very early and most of us are waiting on a lot of schools. We have upcoming visits to campuses and all of that coming up. I think this thread would be a good place to discuss that sort of stuff. -

I have definitely heard that it is harder to get into a school where you did you BA or MA for the PhD much of the time, because of the whole academic incest thing, at least at the most competitive of schools (which no doubt includes Chicago). I would certainly not take an implied rejection from there and assume it speaks to your chances elsewhere. -

What are the rules for up-votes, anyway? It feels like I use one and they are gone, and that they magically return at random times. This is my way of saying I have none but I quite enjoy a number of posts and I would like to express that! -
