NYU Polytech - How does it compare?
uclacolumbia replied to aj_collector's topic in Computer Science
Is there any diffference between the MSCS programs offered at NYU GSAS and NYU Poly? -
Did anyone receive admission decision from Northwestern's M.S. program yet? It seems like they're taking unusually long time to make the decision on M.S. application this year.

Is this the best I can do? PhD Top 15.. Not my dream school
uclacolumbia replied to ConfApp's topic in Computer Science
UPenn is a great school.... Don't be greedy. Given your low GPA, you're lucky that Penn wants you. It's very unlikely that with a 3.05 GPA, you can get into a Top 10 schools, unless you have other stellar research experience (which you said that you don't have). You know that the average GPA for the top 5 or 10 schools are around 3.7, right? -
Does anyone have any insider information about this program at Duke? They are not ranked very high, but they have a very small acceptance rate (less than 2% is what I heard!). I wonder why it's so hard to get accepted into Computer Science Department at Duke.

Haven't heard from six schools... is that normal?
uclacolumbia replied to oops's topic in Computer Science
I haven't heard from Northwestern either. Duke just sent out their decisions. it took them a while. . -
It seems like NYU has MSCS in GSAS and in NYU Poly. Are they different master programs? Do they have different admission standard?

Stanford MSCS is not very research oriented. Just check out Stanford's degree requirement.

Does anyone have any opinion on this MS programin CS from Yale? This does not seem to be a big program at yale, and I couldn't tell if this program is worth going or not. Does the department emphasize a lot on research? It does not seem to admit a lot of students, and it's really not a that highly ranked CS program. I am just wondering what the reputation of this MSCS program is... and how competitive is it to get admitted to this seemingly small program (is it really that hard to get into as the ranking suggests)?

Why does Harvard SEAS admit so few Masters students, but so many PhD students?
-
Does anyone have any opinion on this non-thesis MCS program from a highly ranked CS department at UIUC? This is of course designed for working professional without emphasis on original thesis. I am just wondering what the reputation of this MCS program is... and how competitive is it to get admitted to this non-thesis program (is it really that hard to get into as the ranking suggests)?

A&M for sure. USC = safety school.

Is it a good idea to have your colleague (or some random friend) to write one for you if you absolutely can't find a 3rd recommender? (Or you posed as a colleague to write one for yourself, if you know what I mean.) And is it a good idea to send a few more email request for letter if I don't hear back from my potential recommender after a few days? (cuz I have a deadline in the next week) I sent him email asking for letters about 2 weeks ago... he's actually my third recommender. I've had two set.

Ever had your application tossed for lack of LOR's?
uclacolumbia replied to Sociograd's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I've heard some cases where the applicants got admitted (to a prestigious school) fwith only two letters, but other parts of his applications were very good. So you better pray that the adcom would be impressed with your scores/GPA/experience/etc. -
May I ask how Columbia and Yale notified you of your acceptance? Did they send a formal acceptance letter via post? Or did they simply direct you to their website for a generic online letter? And I'd go for Columbia if you only want to go to industry after the Masters, and Yale if you want to go onto PhD after the Masters, because MS program at Columbia is more geared toward practical training for working in industry (i.e. less research), but Yale's MS program is more researched oriented.

can I ask how Columbia Engineering notified you of your acceptance? Did they send you a formal acceptance letter via post? Or they only directed you to their website for a generic online letter? No. There is nearly ZERO financial help for a master student at Columbia engineering (just like most masters programs in other schools). Personally I think it's worth the money to get a Masters degree from top ranked CS program like Columbia from Ivy League. It's not like you have to spend 4 years there like undergrad. You only have to pay for a year of tuition, and you most likely can get the money back in your first year of working after graduation with that Columbia degree.
