  1. Mine, at least, seemed like part of a mass mailing. It was not sent from anyone in the department but from the Dean of Graduate Studies.
  2. Re: Columbia - false. I spoke to people in the department. Not all decisions have been made yet; they're to be finalized at the end of this week.
  3. Can anyone confirm or deny the info in the most recent post about Stanford? The poster wrote that the Anthro Department is having its "Finalist Visiting Weekend" this coming weekend...
  4. Hey, sorry for the delay - I'm the person who posted the UCSC acceptance today. I actually have no idea whether interviews are typically a part of the UCSC admissions process. I did not have a formal interview, but I did speak with my POI via Skype. We had planned to speak shortly before applications were due, but our conversation was delayed until the end of December - and so said POI was able to discuss my application when we spoke. Because I was asked about my interests and application, the conversation felt a bit like an interview at times, but the POI never referred to it as such. I suspect all admits have been notified by this point, as the graduate coordinator wrote to say that she is in the process of determining who will be able to attend the planned visiting day on February 29. That said, all e-mails I've received have been addressed only to me, so I can't say with absolute certainty that all other admits have been contacted. I hope my suspicions are wrong and that you guys will be notified soon. :-/ I'm sorry; I know this isn't the most helpful of responses. Do let me know if I can answer anything else.
  5. My own "unofficial" acceptance meant that my POI told me that the department had decided to admit me - and had even determined my funding - but that the graduate school still had to approve the acceptance and package (which, I gather from other posters in my field, mostly means that they verify that I meet eligibility requirements). The department was "confident" that I would be approved. I think the appropriateness of issuing unofficial acceptances varies from program to program. Obviously the program I mentioned above feels comfortable telling students that they've been admitted before the decision is approved by the graduate school. However, I also received an offer from a POI at a different school who specifically told me that she had not been permitted to tell me I'd been admitted before I'd been approved by the director of graduate studies. And yet another program issued me an official acceptance the other day when I had absolutely no contact - besides my application - with any professors there at all. My advice: don't freak out just yet. Even though unofficial acceptances seem to have occurred at the programs to which you've applied, you just don't know that all decisions have been made. It could be that you've been admitted but not yet approved by the graduate school. It could be that the admissions committee does "rounds" of acceptances, and you just weren't accepted in the first round. It could be that you weren't accepted but are being considered for the waitlist. If you're really anxious, you can call and ask whether all decisions have been made, but you'll probably start getting more solid information in the next week or two anyway. I hope this was somewhat helpful, and good luck!
  6. Does anyone know if all Berkeley admits have been contacted?
  7. I took a number of Kaplan tests prior to taking the exam. The math sections were fairly in line with those of the real GRE. The Kaplan verbal, however, was quite a bit harder. Lowest Q: 700-800 Lowest V: 680-780 Highest Q: 750-800 Highest V: 750-800 I also took the PowerPrep test a week before the actual exam, and my scores on the actual test were identical: Q: 740-800 V: 750-800
  8. Medical/psychological anthropology here, too, though cultural at a few universities that don't have a distinct MedAnth program. Out of curiosity, how many schools are you guys applying to? And is your number of schools based on some sense of what is normal, the limits of your budget, or entirely arbitrary? I know no one else who is applying or has applied to anthropology programs (besides professors, of course), so I really lack an understanding of what, if anything, is "normal".
