Ugh, I'm sorry about the UT Austin rejection, Supernovasky. UCSB, please call me! I'll be available all night and day to answer your call!

Anyone know any details about the LGBTQ community in Louisville? I've done some searching online, but any experiences or thoughts would be helpful! Also, is being a vegetarian in Louisville doable?

UT Austin Acceptances should be coming soon
sociologyplease replied to Supernovasky's topic in Sociology Forum
@Palito, As an aside, I'm also from (and currently living in) Portland and considered applying to UT Austin because I felt the town would be such a great match, ha. Portland will be hard to leave-I'm been accepted and recommended for full funding to the one M.A. program I applied for, so leaving Portland is now certain for me and I'm already nostalgic. -

What will you treat yourself to?
sociologyplease replied to OnceAndFutureGrad's topic in Waiting it Out
If I get into a Ph.D. program (I've already gotten into to a M.A. program in the south, and promptly went out for mint juleps), I will treat myself to a fancy new piece of technology- smartphone, kindle, something nice. -
SocHope and hmr08, congrats!

Not sure if this is relevant to your background, but I am in the same situation and I just got hired for a nanny job. It's perfect because it pays super well, is low-key, and they are flexible with letting me travel for interviews/visiting days. Depending on your experience with kids and your degree (I have a master's degree in a kid-related field) and the demographics of your town, you can make a really great wage.

I have been worried sick about not getting in anywhere that I applied. I applied to all PHDs and one MA, as a plan B. I just found out I've gotten into the MA and have full funding. This gave me a ton of relief, but it seems too potentially emotionally devastating to consider that I'll get into one of the PHD programs, so for now I'm focusing on learning about the city that the MA is in. Oh, and constantly refreshing the boards and my email box, while yelling at my partner, "Why are they not emailing me???" My partner's response has been, "Because it is midnight on a Saturday."

Places you'd actually consider attending
sociologyplease replied to Chuck's topic in Sociology Forum
I think that it's a really tricky topic. You indicate that you would prefer to go to program B over no program at all, and I think that the conversation really comes back to that. Do you want to reapply next year to these five dream programs or can you settle for something else this year? I applied to one funded M.A. as a back up option because I wanted a little more insurance that I was moving on somewhere this year. Programs A and/or B might be that for you. -
@ThisSlumgullionIsSoVapid, you win this thread. @SocHope, I applied to UCLA too, and I did not receive confirmation from the department regarding my application status. I did, however, email them prior to the deadline to confirm that they had gotten all of my items, and was then in a long on-going conversation with them as my GREs couldn't seem to find their way there, so that might be a reason why I wouldn't get an email? If you hear of anything about the confirmations let me know, please!

I'm also refreshing emails/this forum/the results page constantly. Ugh, waiting.

I didn't apply there, and have no information about the interviews, but congrats! That is very exciting! Is it a top choice of yours?

I've had some difficulty with transcripts, for sure. I've gotten them all in on time, but I've had to continually check to make sure they have arrived and been processed. For a couple of schools, weird things seemed to happen, like they received one transcript in a pack I sent, but not the other, so I had to priority mail another one at the very last minute. I'll be very glad when this whole process is over.

I mentioned my interest in ethnography, as my proposed doctoral research is an ethnography and my writing sample is also an ethnography. I also applied to schools which were strong in qualitative, feminist, and/or ethnographic methods or had someone specific using those methods who I wanted to work with. I have past quant. publications, plus I had a former stats/methods professor write a LOR, but overall, I am a clear qualitative candidate. I wouldn't want to be somewhere that didn't have others doing that.

Quite a lot of UCSB. My interests are: sexuality/gender, social movements, family

I totally know what you mean about looking at your list and thinking that you are so screwed. I seem to waver between feeling hopeful and waking up in panic after dreaming that I didn't get in anywhere. My list : UCSB UCSC UCLA U Michigan U Chicago Indiana Rutgers U Albany UMass Amherst U Conn Brandeis Georgia State Louisville (MS) Good luck to everyone!

Might not be that relevant, but I went to a Catholic institution for my undergraduate (Holy Cross affiliated, not Jesuit, however) and religion seeped into every part of the classroom experience! It also impacted the services I could receive in the health center (no birth control) and the sort of policies that were put into place to protect students (no clause granting non-discrimination based on sexual orientation, for example). Now, this stuff might not impact you, and obviously graduate programs are much different than undergraduate, but I would take a look at the overall policies of the school as well.

Money is a huge issue. My family is helping me out, luckily, so that's been huge for me. There's no way I could afford to do 12 on my own. I do agree that there aren't really any "safe" schools, but I did apply to a few lower ranked ones that I still had a good fit with and that I would be actually interested in attending, mostly out of coincidence as opposed to searching for lower ranked schools . I think you shouldn't worry too much about the ranking. If there are other schools, even other competitive ones, that you are interested in than those would be good ones to add.
-
cast, not case, obviously.
-
Yes, I think that's true. I also have a M.S. in a related field. My mentor basically told me to case the net wide so that I can compare funding offers too, which sold me on applying to so many.

Thank you!

So (some of) the new GRE scores have been posted. Any chance anyone here has an idea about what a new cutoff standard will be? I've heard that 300 might be a cut off, and of course there are also percentiles to consider. Is 70th still the percentile to break?
-
This is my first time applying, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I am finishing up a M.S. in another field and I suggest applying to a variety of schools, if you can. It's a ton of money, and you totally shouldn't apply to any school that you would not consider going to, but if you can find a school that has someone doing work in your specialization that might be a less well-ranked, I would add it in.
