  1. I am in Stony Brook. I know it will be better once I go to orientation and meet some people!
  2. Ugh, I just moved into my place in Long Island on Sunday. I don't think I like it here. CONS 1. My apartment is next to the worlds scariest Walmart. 2. I rented a room in a six bedroom home, thinking I would meet people that way....but everyone keeps to themselves. Its so non-communal that my bathroom has 4 rolls of toilet paper! If I can't share toilet paper with these people, I guess friendship is out of the question. 3. My car has a leaky radiator and the jackass mechanic up here must have noticed that I am a young female and gave me an OUTLANDISH quote. 4. Its ugly here, really really ugly. I grew up in Jersey, in a cute seashore town, then lived in Chicago....I like scenery. I got spoiled by lovely views. This area of Long Island looks like dilapidated strip mall hell. 5. Liqueur store closes at 8. Roommate says they all do. 6. Bought minimal groceries, paid exorbitant amount of money. It was like buying Aldi food at Whole Foods prices. PROS 1. Nail salon near my house has 16.00 mani/pedi, Mon-Thurs. 2. Cute/non-depressing town within driving distance. Cute seafood restaurant has bomb crabcakes. 3. At least I wont be distracted. 4. Room is big and has lots of room for clothes. I cannot wait to start classes. Seacrest, out.
  3. I don't know really about Ivys, I assume you need a decentscore, but I did pretty poorly on the GRE (ie. way worse than you) and got into a good program. I wouldn't stress out about it. Retake it if you feel like it, but if they like other parts of your application, like the writing sample or letters of rec, i doubt your quantitative GRE scores will be a deal breaker!
  4. I am teaching preschool, enjoying the Chicago summer and going to see as much baseball as possible. I may also start reading/brushing up on some arty type things.
  5. Broadly I am interested in institutional critique, performance, and contemporary latin american art. I too don't really have one concentration (yet!), I was just curious about other people. To the Rutgers person-mine also says that. My adviser is a Rutgers alum and told me that they may make unfunded offers later in the process or wait for people to accept/deny their initial offers.
  6. I actually just got into SUNY too and will be accepting! I seem to remember Joseph Monteyne telling me that they were taking somewhere around 4 or 5 when I visited the campus. The NY state budget really sucks right now, so they can't fund very many. I am really excited and love their program. Lots of theory and opportunities to do interdisciplinary work. Location is not great, but that might be a blessing because there won't be a lot of distractions. I am going to move to Long Island for the first year, bc the course load plus TAing will be a ton of work and I don't want to stress myself out commuting. All the current grad students I spoke with suggested that you live near campus the first year, then move to the city afterwards. What are your areas of concentration?
  7. I am still in limbo. I am hoping/praying that someone at the school I am waitlisted at gets a better offer somewhere else, so I can have their slot. I emphatically ask all those who know where they are going to DECLINE their other offers as quickly as possible! Think about the poor souls suffering on waitlists everywhere! If not, I am going to go to Cal Arts. They have so much exciting latin american art and scholarship being produced there and I know it would be a warm/awesome place to be while reapplying to PhDs! I am in Chicago now and hate being so cold! Unless the other MA program I got into brings the cizzash. Then I will get a parka and deal.
  8. Thanks! Congrats to you guys too!
  9. I have one school left, one waitlist I am at the top of, two rejections and two acceptances to MA programs. But I am feeling good about getting off of that waitlist! I hope that the people that got accepted get into somewhere else, with more money or prestige. Are NYU or Columbia's PhD letters out yet?
  10. I was rejected at CUNY. It came in via snail mail. Fear the small envelope!
  11. Many schools had to cut the number of PhD's they could take because of funding. One of the schools I am waitlisted for only took 4 this year. Especially if they are in NY or California because their budget is a mess!
  12. I would love to chat about art history! Isn't that what we all want to do with our lives?
  13. Has anyone heard from CUNY? Or Rutgers? I know Rutgers admitted some, but I still havn't heard. Maybe a good thing?
