  1. Ah, okay, thanks for the clarification, Nordicllama! (cool username, btw) I wrote an essay for somewhere where the fellowships were for people studying histories of minorities. That might be their version of a diversity fellowship.
  2. What does Baxendale or Thayer mean?* *I live under a semitic rock.
  3. Yeah. maybe. Keeping the faith!
  4. My Rutgers status also says No Decision. I hope to hear something soon. Just to tie it up and say it's over if it's over. Any word on CUNY? Anyone know how people found out last year? People wrote website on the results search, but I don't see where on the website that would happen.
  5. I went to hippie liberal arts school where all profs go by first names (and we even had accepted nicknames for them!) so in this whole process I've been VERY cautious to say Prof. But I agree, when they sign with a first name, I think all bets are off. But you know, if you want to be safe, wait til you meet them and feel it out.
  6. YAY SANDY! (hey ps, sandy is my name too, so all these people cheering for you makes me feel happy!! go sandys!)
  7. Hey guys. I didn't hear a peep last week from anyone. Is it for sure that I will hear SOMETHING (rejections, too) this week? Is this a "big week" for admissions? Or should I learn my lesson from last and be relaxed about checking emails? This weekend has been such a nice breather from the worrying and waiting, and it kills me that last week I stressed so much and then heard not a single word.
  8. Even though I've been speaking my research language for years (Hebrew), I decided to take the year off to do my applications seriously, work and get some "real world experience," and seriously brush up on my academic Hebrew and get more comfortable reading serious sources. I also took Arabic last semester and will spend the summer in Israel studying Advanced Hebrew and more Beginners Arabic. I cannot suggest a year off enough. For my area of study, this is clearly imperative, and many programs would not even look at me twice if I hadn't already had Hebrew under my belt. Surely for Americanists this is different (and I agree with TMP that you should speak to your prospective advisors about it), but I still don't think it's a bad idea to take a year off, travel, and do something different! I've got 5 great non-profit jobs (yes, 5 - it all amounts to something like full time but I have time to take languages!), went on a month long trip to India, and will spend the summer in Israel and hopefully travel elsewhere. So if you can do something like that, I think you'll appreciate the time to think, learn, and write those crazy applications.
  9. Is it a terrible idea to contact my POI? We had this great, long meeting in November. She said, and I quote, "I have a good feeling about this. Competition is stiff, but I think it will work out." I just don't think I can wait the whole weekend without some conclusion... Even if it's a bad conclusion.
  10. I called Rutgers History, didn't say my name, and they told me to contact Seth Koven. I'm thinking of contacting my POI instead since we had such a great meeting in November. I don't know... I'm feeling the jig is up! Unless we STILL have only seen Europeanists and Americanists hearing from Rutgers, and for some reason Global History is behind. congratulations goldie!
  11. Staying positive today!

  12. It's Friday morning before a long weekend... I hope we all get some good news to sustain us for the next 3 days.
  13. Congrats teachgrad!! Is anyone here one of the Brandeis waitlistees? I'd love to know your impression of Brandeis and I'm interested to know why they started with waitlists, not admits.
  14. What are the odds that I still have 9 phd programs to hear from and some people are almost done?! I feel like they are all going to contact me on the same day!
  15. Lately, my morning mood goes from "TODAY COULD BE THE DAY! " to "today... could be... a terrible day." I'm just happy that my Hebrew class at NYU has no service in the basement, so I can't be worrying about checking my email for that hour and 15 minutes. Oh, and the subway has become a nice refuge for relaxation as well (until I go above ground across the Manhattan Bridge and go immediately to check the phone.) Anyone? Anyone?
  16. It seems like last year, Rutgers made it's acceptances between the 16-17 and the rest were rejections (rejections that happened much, much later). So here's for hoping today is a good day for all of us Rutgers non-Americanist hopefuls! I have to imagine that the evaluation is correct - that so far only Americanists have been told. Is it possible other subfields haven't even met yet? Oh bother. I am stopping all temptation to email my POI and ask what's up.
  17. Yeah, I've been checking obsessively too. I hope you are right that they are still trickling. I have this feeling that I am going to be contacted by my POI via email or call if I am accepted, because we had a long long long interview in the Fall. Like 2 hours long. I also feel that they cannot be done with all their acceptances if there has been so little action on this board about it. But who knows. Would still love to know the sub fields of those accepted already!
  18. Yeah, I'm dying to know what field these Rutgers admits are in. I'm in Jewish or Mid-east. Probably only 1 or 2 people in my field get admitted, so I'm super on edge...!
  19. Are all these Rutgers admits Americanists?
  20. Yes, saw that. Would love to know who these people are hearing from and in which subfield...
  21. I'm honestly freaking out about Rutgers. I know that the chances are soooo slim and it kills me because the perfect POI for me is there! Ah! She said she'd advocate for me... but... mmm... heart is beating real fast if today is the day.
  22. Mine too!
  23. Who heard from Rutgers and how?
  24. Congrats Telemaque! Would you mind telling us if the email came from a POI or what?
  25. Who heard from UCLA?!
