  1. FAFSA in... And I had to do my taxes in the process, which turned out great because I have a refund coming... and It kept me busy and "distracted" from the anxiety of waiting for an answer at least for a few hours
  2. hang in there. I was doing the same thing after my rejection. And then I told myself: make art that would make them regret not accepting me!
  3. Just got my rejection email from Yale... I'm heading to the local water hole with my buddy to down a beer or two... But the same day, today, when I got home from work I found a $400 check for the lease of one of my images... Well, you win some, you loose some, life is beautiful!
  4. 12 apps in... Now I'll start logging back to each one to make sure there aren't any issues (a couple of them already sent email notifications of missing items or form fields)... I'll have to ask my landlord to replace the mailbox lock by the end of March...There will be a lot of wear and tear between now and then...
  5. I don't think being a musician is a "requirement"... Just try it sometime to get together with people to make noise (and just be open for what could happen), leaving all the music notations, chords, keys, out of the equation... And instruments arent required either... you'll be surprised what kind of cool noises can be made with pans, plastic bags, etc...
  6. we applied to a lot of the same schools... it would be freaky if we ended up in the same program, and then we would have to jam at least...
  7. Ok I'm day dreaming... But I lived in NYC while Warhol was still alive, saw Lou Reed shoot heroin on stage on the Pyramid club, and now with the passing of Mike Kelley, I reminded myself of how much I love making noise, experimental and non music and so if I get accepted ANYWHERE, the first thing I'll do is a flyer to recrut folks to form a noise making thing... Is anyone going to explore something totally out of their main focus?
  8. done! Now the freakin' wait...
  9. Yes, but my outlook is probably different perhaps due to my not so typical grad student profile: I'm happy in my current career, 20 years and counting experience, even if it isn't directly related to the art field. I'm confident that in three years time, I'll still be able to jump back into a similar job; there is a lot of growth in my field and it's not going to change in a long time to come... Of course I'd prefer to work as an independent artist as soon as I'm out of school, but I'll just take one day at a time; I'm enjoying everything about working towards that possible predicament, "keeping that big dream alive" (Milton Avery)
  10. already done all the math, and even if I borrowed every cent that it costs to attend Columbia, It will still be a wise investment to attend grad school there: I'm making $35,000 /year (and I've been making that before I earned my Bachelors). Once I have my MFA (plus my more than two decades work experience), even if I'll be paying several hundred dollars a month in student loans, I'll still be ahead... The jobs I'll be applying start at the 70,000/ year range on the low end and that will give me plenty of elbow room to pay back my loans and still live at least at the same level I'm living today (I'm pretty happy with my financial situation). And I could also sell some art on the side ( I've been getting results with my work already, fresh out of undergrad) and I wasn't even considering that as far as sources of income.
  11. good because I'm starting on it tonight...
  12. I agree with you. Even if the only reason for applying there is to tell my family: "hey, if I had the money, I could attend grad school at Columbia, they just accepted me..." Since MFA acceptance is not based on a test score, I believe it's worth the extra cost and time to send more apps than the norm (if you can afford it, of course) so you can sort of see the kind of "acceptance rate" your work/statement is getting... I'm sure this would be really helpful for someone not getting in the first year and then preparing to apply again on the next season...
  13. I may not be attending there (if accepted)... If they don't "show me the money" I will not go... I'm hoping for funding my tuition while at my grad studies...
  14. I've applied to 10 myself and still two more to go... It wasn't easy, and I was concerned with the stuff out of my control (letters of recommendation, transcripts), but so far, most applications have gone through without any issues, albeit some minor ones... Oh I've taken up Yoga over the past year... it helped.
  15. I'm glad you touched on the point that even a state college MFA can end up costing as much as one of the 'top' private schools... I've watched our state college fees go up (here in California) to the point of absurdity (or obscenity) in the past several years; even as a working student, I had to use installments to pay my fees this past Fall. Also, after talking with several people about this, the consensus seems to be that private schools tend to have more additional resources in the way of opportunities to lower the cost of attending, than the smaller and public schools. I didn't research this, just word of mouth so far...
  16. I agree, I've committed a couple of gaffes and the particular schools sent me emails specifically pointing to the "mistake" or the part of my application that was missing. One of the schools went out of their way and allowed me to postmark the envelope with my portfolio CD after the deadline (after I explained I'd assumed they were also using slideroom). Another school allowed me to make a change on a choice (radio button) on an application form (the person dealing with me said he'd print my email reply as proof that I wanted the change, and he'd go ahead and make the change for me).
  17. Hi, I've just finished putting myself through college while working full-time (I was attending school part-time)... Basically I'm poor, I don't have family that can support me or help me financially and I have no savings. I didn't plan on going to grad school after college, but my undergrad professors thought I'd have a good chance to be accepted somewhere based on the work I did the last couple of years. I told myself to block out any money worries, to give myself this "great gift", the opportunity to get into a grad program that hopefully will help me further develop my work as an artist, and if I have to get a loan to do it, then that's what I'll be doing. I'm wondering how many folks are in the same boat as me, going for broke, even if they know they'll have to pay for at least part of their education through borrowing.
  18. I have a couple: As an older student, I'd only go to grad school if I get into a "top" school (whatever that means) but you can tell by the list of places I've applied... So, if I do not get into any of the schools I'm applying I'll be looking at the MFAs offered long distance: that way I don't have to move, change my life completely for two years to go on an adventure that could end up being awesome but it could also be just ok... I won't be applying again (as I did this time), I'd be just focusing on the schools that are building up their distance programs and hopefully by the time I'll be applying again I'll have even more choices... Also, I've always been employed (even during the last 3 years while working on my undergrad degree in painting)...
  19. weird enough, I don't remember his name but I showed with him at a small arts organization in san diego around 2006 2007? I know he has a Hispanic name, Mexican descent...
  20. If I get accepted into ANY one of the schools I'm applying, I'll head to the mountains east of where I live and mountain bike through miles of remote trails, through the desert, pine forests, do some yoga, meditate...
  21. Yeap, over 9 apps sent, two to go and I'm already wearing out the lock on the mailbox...
  22. I haven't sent my application (but was planning on applying there as well) , but why do you ask? Do they hate painters?
  23. I really dig your work... I'm curious to find out whether you got accepted somewhere....
  24. 47 but no kids and roaming free (single, no attachments) I'm open to go anywhere as long as the finances permit... (oh, I'm poor).
  25. 47 and kickin'
