  1. I got the letter today in Prince George – rejected with a score of 16.1 -- geography. I think I took a major hit with the departmental appraisal because I’m at tiny Moose U. I was ranked #1 out of 1 applicant in the department, which apparently is this kiss of death. There’s an Institutional size bias!!!! (symptomatic of second stage of grief: anger). Ah well, at least now I don’t have to quit my job to earn less money. Courage to those unsuccessful this year ... keep moving ... we’ll get there. Congratulations to the winners. You buggers better earn it! Big hug to all ... you’ve made the waiting a little more bearable. See ya next year.
  2. I found out through school: rejected. Will report my shitty score when I get it. Going to the garden to eat worms.
  3. I realize applicants are assessed by committee and by year of study, but some may find these statistics interesting anyway (based on scores reported in this forum). Mean score of successful applicants = 21.5 (n = 19) Lowest score of successful applicants = 17.7 (n = 19) Mean score of waitlisted applicants = 16.4 (n = 7) Highest score of waitlisted applicants = 18.5 (n = 7) Conclusion: I am so colossally screwed! This is brutal. I need a hug. Applicant, Status, Score, Subject area Cancomm, CGS, 18.5, Communications bedalia, CGS / Will decline (good!), 21.15, ? 4. I hear ya. It’s not easy to reconcile passion for scholarship with pragmatics of family life. I think Tri-Council processes are symptomatic of a paternalistic/patronizing attitude in the academy towards students generally, as if we’re all without responsibilities and willing to work for peanuts. I have a well paid job that I’d have to quit if I get SSHRC, but I’m willing to try to live on half as much money because I love research and teaching. But the disrespect one has to endure to make such compromises is a little hard to take sometimes. I especially hate the paternalistic attitude shown by some faculty when they editorialize on my life choices (e.g., I should give up my sessional lecturing position if I get SSHRC “because I’d have lots of money”, or that I should use my scholarship money to go to this or that conference because that what students are supposed to do). Faculty should provide advice, sure, but these are my choices! In the final analysis, though, I hope we’re all in it because we love what we’re working on, we love ideas and the thought that we contribute, and not because we think that once we have a doctorate we’ll finally be treated with respect. Post-docs and junior faculty are treated like crap too. When I look at it in this way, a SSHRC award would simply mean that I’d leave my jobby job and finish the PhD sooner. Either way, I’ll get there eventually, and do so without compromising the things that are important to me: working on scholarship that I’m passionate about and providing a secure and loving home for my family. It may take me 8-10 years to finish a PhD without compromising these two things. But if so, so be it. The road is long. Enjoy the trip. Good luck.

  6. Ummm ya. I’m not sure if this is actually interesting or just a way to keep myself occupied in these trying times. It may not be possible to determine from this limited sample, but I’d like to see if we can figure out where the “cutoff” was for the two evaluation committees I’m most interested in. I could have gone with either the Political Science committee or the Geography committee (my field is political geography). I’ll target the least competitive committee next year if I need to. 7. I wanted to compare the scores and such so I put this little table together (hope the formatting works). Perhaps folks will find this interesting and update their info (?). These are some pretty sobering statistics from a pretty brutal process (imho). I was waitlist last year with a score of 14.9. It looks like we’ll need to score much higher this year to have a chance. 8. Please Mr. Postman look and see you got a letter in your bag for me?” (oh please) I been waiting a long long time Since I heard from that SSHRCy of mine There must be some word todayyeayea From the SSHRCies so far away Please Mr. Postman look and see If there’s a letter a letter for me … Waiyeayeayea Mr. Postman What about now ... Hug now?
  9. ... my chances? I don’t think any of us has any idea of what are chances are. Yes, we can and do speculate on the weighting of criteria – publications, prior awards, references, proposal, etc etc. – but I think there are just too many vagaries in the selection process to be able to have any idea. I suspect at least part of the selection comes down to a whole bunch of intangibles: what kind of mood the reviewers were in when they happened to get to my application, how many applications they happened to have turned down in the 20 minutes just prior to reviewing mine, the interpersonal dynamic of the group doing the reviews (e.g., one “guy” likes to vote “no” whenever another “guy” votes “yes”,) whether some reviewers like the fact that I’ve been working with a CRC for past couple years (or if they noticed), or other intangibles such as whether they think my school is too small to properly support a PhD CGS. My point is this: we are all qualified … we are all deserving in different ways … we’re all very strong scholars. There are far too many intangible vagaries to have any idea of our chances. Common guys … gimme some lov’in … group cyber hug!!!
  10. I’m really hoping they will email the results to my school and my supervisor will email me on Friday with the news! Last year I got the news from my supervisor two days before the letter arrived (waitlisted ... #$@!). I want to get hammered this weekend, whether in sorrow (rum) or celebration (Champaign). Group hug now?
  11. Seeking tao of SSHRC through meditation ... Aummmmm ... aummmmm ... I see SSHRC letters being mailed today .... aummmmm ... I see letters arriving in BC on Friday .... aummmmm ... I see a letter which says “you are waitlisted, again” ... doh! Last year I got the letter on April 26th. Telepathic reasoning indicates that this is the week. Good luck all you hard-working scholars. Group hug!
  12. “There must be some word today from the [sSHRCies] so far away Please Mr. Postman look and see is there a letter, a letter for me?” Wait a minute Mr. Postman ... wayyeayeayea Mr. Postman...” (The Beetles). I know I know ... but better than biting nails while curled up under mailbox. Too soon?
  13. I got the email yesterday. My application for the PhD scholarship/fellowship has been received by SSHRC. Any idea when SHHRC announces the results?
  14. forensicfatale --- I got a SSHRC CGS for the 2nd year of my Masters (2010/11). Undergrad GPA: 4.15 Grad GPA: 4.0 Related work experience: quite a bit (~ 5 years related work and some part-time undergrad teaching) Publications and conferences: none (a major hole in my application, I think) Program of Study: hardest I’ve ever worked on a two-page document I was “waitlisted” for a SSHRC PhD Award for 2011/12 (no joy, yet). My application for 2012 is in.... fingers crossed.
  15. Oh, and I'm not so sure the waitlist order is only by sub-group. I read in this forum somewhere that eventually all the waitlisted people get "rolled together" into one waitlist, which means it's possible to go from 1st on a subgroup waitlist to, say, 7th on the “rolled up” list (I think someone said they went from 1st to 8th). Combining ordinal lists is problematic, of course, which suggests they likely use an interval scale. For what it’s worth, I think you chances are still very good, jagerman. Wish I could say the same for me – deep sigh (but, on the bright side, my 2012 app is in, and I think it’s much stronger than last year).
  16. Thanks for the reply, jagerman, albeit with not-so-good news. That you haven’t been "bumped" yet doesn’t bode well for me. Ah well, there’s always next year (#$@&!).
  17. I received notice in May I had been "waitlisted" for the PhD competition and was assigned a rank of 14.8. I assume 14.8 is way down the list so I’m not holding out much hope. I just submitted my application for 2012 and it's much stronger, I think. But I still can’t help grasping for a remote chance for 2011, however slim. Please may I ask those “waitlisted” people who got good news, what was your rank? Do I still have a chance of receiving an award for the 2011 competition?
  18. I’m confused. I received notice in May I had been waitlisted and assigned a rank of 14.8. I assumed 14.8 was way down the list so steeled myself for more poverty. Is it possible I misunderstood SSHRC’s cryptic ranking system? Do I still have a chance? Might I still receive the notice, even months from now? I’ve tried contacting SSHRC to find out where I am on the waitlist but haven’t been able to get answers. Does anyone know what the “cutoff” was (I was assessed by committee 7523 – geography) or have any guesses on where I might be on the waitlist? Are there any “good news” stories from people who have been waitlisted?
