  1. rendonmana - were you applying for bioanthro...and what area of specialization if you don't mind me asking? Good luck with UPitt and UConn!
  2. Does anyone know about WashU or UConn? There were a couple of WashU rejections in early February, but nothing since. The application page doesn't give any indication that a decision has been made on my application.
  3. I completely agree with ANDS that the website is a crucial recruiting tool. The website (except for the recommendations of my undergraduate advisors) is my first real chance to evaluate your program. I want to be able to find several things very easily: 1. The application deadline! - If I cannot find the application deadline clearly listed on your site it is very, very frustrating. For one school which I was considering, I was never able to find the deadline listed anywhere on the department's website. Obviously, I can call the admissions department or graduate coordinator, but I should not have to. List the application deadline in bold, in red, and/or multiple times. I have friends who completely axed programs from their lists because they felt this was sloppy and spoke to the experiences they might have if they attended those programs. It is also appreciated when a program lists the projected offer/rejection notification time frame (even if you can only give what these dates have been historically), whether the program gives interviews and whether they host on-campus recruit weekends. 2. Professor profiles - These should be fairly detailed and include their current research interests, a list of representative publications, where they received their degree, who they are advising and (in the case of departments which assign students to an advisor before entering the program) if that professor is taking anymore students that year. 3. The department should generally have a good description of the program's strengths. 4. A list with links for any departments, institutions or working groups to which the program in question has strong ties. 5. Financial aid/fellowships/assistantships info - This should be clearly explained. If you offer full funding to your applicants/most of your applicants then tell me. Flat out. If you do not offer substantial funding, tell me flat out. If you don't offer good funding I am going to find out anyway if you accept me. At least knowing the situation would allow me to plan ahead, and look into outside funding. 6. Graduate student placements Other things that are not necessary, but which are bonuses to include: 1. The normal incoming class size, how many new students you accept every year or are expecting to accept that year. 2. Good grad student profiles including: their research interests, who their advisor is, where they got their prior degrees.
  4. I applied with just a bachelors and have been accepted to doctoral programs for bioanthro. That being said, I have gotten the impression that a MA is fairly common for cultural anthro students- at least, more cultural anthro students than bioanthro students seem to have gone for a MA before applying to doctoral programs.
  5. Do we know then if Yale and Northwestern have notified everyone they will give interviews to?
  6. Minnesota Emory Illinois Urbana-Champaign UCSB Northwestern UNC UVA Duke Washington University in St. Louis Cornell Cambridge Yale Brown
  7. I was just trying to go through all of the schools that we know have been notifying students of some decision (acceptance, rejection, interview)...am I missing anything? I figure people could copy, paste and add to this list every time we know of a new school. Minnesota Emory Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) UCSB Northwestern UNC University of Virginia (UVA) Duke Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) Cornell Cambridge And, congratulations to everyone so far!
  8. Congratulations! I feel the same way about Northwestern...especially since someone was already invited.
  9. I know its only January 22nd....but this board seems really quiet compared to past application seasons. There have been a few interview offers and acceptances posted on the results thread, but no one really seems to be reporting them here. What are everyone's thoughts on the timing of interview invitations? Specifically, if you don't have an invitation now, when someone else has already posted an offer, does that mean you are out? Or do some schools send interviews invitations out over the course of a couple of days...?
  10. Looks like someone got an interview at Northwestern...
  11. I was just about to start this thread! I haven't heard anything yet, but my heart beats a little faster every time I open my e-mail or the phone rings.
  12. Interestingly, the person who posted a Harvard result has taken it down from the survey.
  13. I don't know if someone has posted these before. Very interesting. Ambiguous Assessment: Critiquing the Anthropology Graduate Admissions Process Lost and Delirious in the Anthropology Graduate Application Process: Negotiations of the Self in early Graduate Socialization
  14. Do you think an applicant would ever get rejected because they were too qualified? I mean, if they had years of teaching experience, extensive field work, numerous publications etc. would that ever be a disadvantage? I was reading over the results survey for past app seasons and some individuals described themselves as shocked because they weren't admitted despite research, funding, teaching, publications, conferences etc. I know that the biggest factor in admissions is "fit," so obviously that is the likely reason for rejection, but still....just wondering what you all thought? (I don't suffer from this problem, if it is one )
  15. I'd guess that everyone is in a SOP writing frenzy. So, what are you writing about? What are your research interests? Geographic region? Where are you applying? Very generally, I want to study maternal health and nutrition. Probably Latin America. Probably Northwestern, Emory, UConn, Ohio State, UNC...plus still finalizing that list.
  16. OP, have you considered Case Western? I believe they have a pretty good psych-anth program or at least faculty with relevant interests.
